Steve, there's many other reasons why the condenser could have stopped running. I didn't see you check the capacitor, it could be almost dead causing the unit to not always start.. ohm the contactor? Did you look for debris or pitted contacts? It could be freezing up and going off on low pressure. Or dirty and going off on high pressure. Thermal overloads. Compressor/fan amps? Tstat batteries. Blower cap? Blower amps? Do you test any of this on calls like this? Or do you just assume the home owner wasn't smart enough to operate his thermostat that he's been using for years without any issues? Take some pride in your work buddy, this is just pure laziness. I certainly hope you didn't accept any money from this guy. If you did, that's highway robbery.

Not to mention, you don't listen to a word your customers say. The guy just clearly said he had it on cool and auto and it got up to 81 degrees in the house. It clearly wasn't working.

If it happens again, maybe Steve will return and pick up where he left off without charging for the return trip. Checking the whole system over would be nice, but that gets expensive when it usually isn't necessary.

@@devnull7550 not true, I check over all the necessary things, find any possible issues to ensure the customer won't be left without cooling over the weekend or something because of my incompetence or laziness. They paid to have me come fix their system. Swapping parts isn't necessarily fixing anything, you need to find the reason why the part failed. And I'm not talking about nickel and dimeing the customer for capacitors and cleanings etc... the majority of my service calls take about an hour, which includes fixing the problem and making sure it's not going to happen again. He should have done a lot more than just tell the customer he doesn't know how to work his stat. Take pride in your work and don't leave the customer hanging or belittle them like that.
