AC Delco and GM Genuine parts difference between GM OE, Gold & Silver lines

AC Delco and GM Genuine Parts has three classifications or tiers of parts. It really boils down to how much you really want to spend or how much you can afford to spend. I call it good, better, and best.
The Good.
The most economical parts line is the "SILVER" line, formerly known as the "Advantage" line. are a high quality value option for most makes and models, backed by general motor s. The color of the packaging is silver metallic which indicates AC Delco silver parts and the packaging can also be identified by the one dot or circle on the bottom right hand corner of the package.
The Better.
The 2nd tier parts line is the "GOLD" line formerly referred to as the "Professional" line. it's pretty decent quality but not GM OE or GM Original Equipment quality. The Gold parts are high-quality alternative to the GM OE line. The gold parts are manufactured to meet GM's expectations for fit, form, and function and are backed by General Motors. the color of the packaging is gold metallic and it can be identified by the two dots or circles on the bottom right hand corner of the packaging.
The Best
The top tier where the top of the line parts from ACDelco or GM genuine parts is called "GM OE" or "GM Original equipment". ACDelco and GM genuine parts the GM Original Equipment are the true OE parts installed during the production or validated by GM, for GM vehicles-designed, engineered, and tested through rigorous standards and backed by General Motors. They are OE parts the dealers sells. didn't see anybody else the packaging will be blue metallic and there will be three dots on the bottom right hand corner of the packaging which indicates it's a GM Original Equipment part. it also will be identified by the genuine GM OE Flag on the packaging.

Superbly informative video. Thank you for posting and sharing your experience and knowledge. Bought one of those cheap distributor caps from a big internet parts seller. It lasted about six months and left me broke down on the side of the interstate about 15 miles away from home. Never again will I buy anything but the GM OEM parts for my GMC. My dad told me back in the 1970’s to aways go back with GM parts since they last longer.

Yup I learned the hard way too. It's such a shame but it is what it is. Now when I was younger cheap China stuff with a lifetime warranty was the cats meows. But I was broke back then now I can afford the better parts and I hate doing things twice or more. Glad I could help you out.

1road is the best. Your video was also great. I was confused as well. I thought the gold (professional) was their highest tier. But you’re right OE is, which makes sense. Thank you!

Welp now I have one new Genuine GM AC Delco bearing and one new AutoZone Gold for side by side test lol. I put in the AC Delco and went on a trip and the other side went out. I had a shop swap it on the road. Beggars can't be choosers and most places just don't stock Genuine GM AC Delco.

Do you think its worth putting new OEM parts in a 20 year old vehicle instead of AC Delco professional? For example the Profession Crankshaft position sensor is half the price of a GM genuine part?

My opinion is if I can afford it I always go with the better parts or highest level specially with the critical areas such as water pumps or difficult areas to access etc. That being said I always try to use OEM parts over aftermarket if economically possible. Now for my opinion as long as it's genuine OEM not important which level of OEM and not counterfeit knock off then you should be good. That's just my thoughts. Just make sure the seller is a genuine authorized OEM seller so you do not get fake or counterfeit parts.

I’ve never purchased any AcDelco products. I’m going to be replacing a starter and an alternator. For the alternator I’m going OEM but for the starter I’m thinking about the AcDelco gold starter. Is gold just as good the OEM?

But here's my thoughts if you go with the cheaper starter and you get lucky then maybe it will last you a long time. You have to spend according to your budget. At least with AC Delco the more you spend the better the quality. To save the budget ACDelco is not as good I don't know. However I don't like replacing every year so I always spend more to get better quality. That's the best way I can answer that question. But as far as sensors I always stick with the OEM recommendations to avoid the cheap China stuff because once I get it diagnosed I don't want to have to Chase my tail after replacing a faulty sensor.

Well a short pencil is better than a long memory. I just do not remember. The 96 Tahoe I did all the maintenance to it and then sold it because I bought a 2000 Tahoe Z71 which was the last year of that body style. I was able to sell the 1996 the same amount of money and purchase the 2000 Z71. After that I did a complete rebuild on my 91 Bronco. So what I do when I decide to keep something especially living out in the desert I change almost all of the complete cooling system, fluids, belts , tube up and clean the IAC and throttle body etc. If I don't see receipts from the work being done on items that I just mentioned I consider it not done no matter what the previous owner said. Especially if I'm not familiar with the vehicle. It may be weird but this stuff is old they don't want to give it all the love I can give it and keep it the longtime without any problems. When I do this i always try to use the original equipment manufacturer parts. I hate just like in your Case changing the water pump and then six or eight months later have to change it out again. Lifetime warranty means nothing to me especially if it's cheap parts. I like saving money but I can't use cheap parts so I'll pay the extra to get the original equipment if it's available. So to answer your question I don't remember which part number I used. Ninety-nine percent of the time I ordered either to RockAuto or Amazon a verified third party vendor who sells original manufacturer parts and i stay away from eBay where there are a lot of counterfeit parts being sold. unless it's an emergency and I need it now. Sorry for the long answer and sometimes I get long winded and don't realize it until I go back and reread it. I just like to be clear about what I do. Good luck

I respect your opinion however I use OEM when I can especially with electronics and sensors but I do believe some aftermarket parts do exceed manufacturers quality. Cheap aftermarket parts I run from unless I'm broke.
