Abus Granit 8077 alarm disc lock literally falls apart after moderate use

Ойын-сауық

A review of the security failings of the Abus Granit Detecto 8077. Two years and 5 months old, showing design failure which leads to the appearance of it being locked when it can be simply lifted off your bike!

Had mine for about three years still works like new. Do spray it occasionally to keep it lubricated, maybe if it dries out it wears.

I have the same lock and it has a spring in the back, so if it doesn't lock properly you'll immediately know because it just won't stay closed. Maybe they added that spring to prevent exactly what you described. The failure can still occur but at least won't go unnoticed

I've had this lock for 4 years and it's still good. The only thing I would say is that you should never be hanging the way suggested in the video. So at least if you do have a problem then you know before walking away

Bought this lock under a year ago in 2020. Used it sparingly on a classic bike always kept in temp controlled covered storage that has done about 1000 miles in the last year, went to put the the lock back yesterday evening after a ride and it fell apart. Still Looks brand new but wont lock. I can see the keyway has moved. Seems others have this issue. I cant imagine it being used more lightly than i have. Not fit for purpose at all.

That's absolutely true. I've bought two of them. One of them is broken and the other one is about to be broken. The product was great at first but I don't recommend for long term usage.

You seem to have the spring missing that holds the balls in place. Even though mine has the spring I have lost the locking balls on a few occasions. I keep spares now so I can replace them. I bought a bag of 100 8.5mm ball bearings from Amazon these fit and work perfectly. I did contact ABUS but they said it was a defect they know about and to return the lock to the place I bought it and they would send it to ABUS UK who would send it to ABUS DE to modify it so they won't fall out anymore. But said it would take a couple of weeks per lock. I have three of them and don't want to be without one for any length of time.

  • @luc1ferblack
    @luc1ferblack2 жыл бұрын

I believe the balls are 8mm and cheap to replace. you insert them when the tray is half out then tap the pin at the front back in and maybe glue them in place. Its a good lock but it sucks that the pins can move over time allowing the balls to fall out. maybe abus updated the front pins. Its pretty expensive for this to happen. maybe the tray causes this with side to side movement forcing the pins outwards

Thanks heaps for posting that review Barry. I had actually just filled in a purchase form and was on the point of taking my credit card out of my wallet to complete the order when I saw your review…..owe you a pint ! I then did a bit of research on the Xena alarmed brake discs to find that plenty of people suffer false alarms, so am having a rethink. I have a good non-alarmed disc lock but rather like the idea of an alarmed one. Taking my brand new CB500 X on the Rosslare Bilbao ferry and the Pyrennes next month and was looking at security. Any other ideas on alarmed disc locks. Thanks again for posting….so much for German engineering prowess !

I've had mine 3 years. When I changed the battery, the ball bearings fell out of the locking shackle. I managed to fit them back in and the disc lock worked fine. Last weak I was undoing the lock and the ball bearings came flying out and I've got no idea how to fit them back in. How are you getting on with the Xena Disc Lock alarm?

ABUS is the gold standard in motorcycle alarms and the #1 in Europe in terms of market share. I understand everyone has a different opinion on what it means for something to be durable, long lasting, etc... But I would say for a lock that retails ~200 USD if it lasts 2 years that works out to $0.27 per day to secure your bike with the best lock possible! (In terms of technology/materials/metals used) With any lock you should be inspecting it occasionally and replacing when necessary :)

Everyone's entitled to an opinion. Worst lock I've had in 25 years of biking, I have two other Abus (chain) locks, all fine. For the gold standard gang, this one's a lemon.

Most stupid and simp comment I’ve ever read. They are not the “Gold” standard, they make some good locks and some are crap. Seems like this guy works for Abus and just posted this comment. Accept criticism and Abus should improve & test their product.

The only problem is the spring that holds bearings in place. Thats all. That particular part needs just some extra love and the lock will be perfectly fine. And dont forget to lubricate the lock itself. Had this lock for 3+ years. Cheers

Yep! Abus locks are all constructed such that the lock must be in an unlocked position to receive the bolt and then you can lock it. It's not like a masterlock where you can just close it with no key. This video shows it working as intended :)

I got one but I don't put it the way you do on the disc. I actually put it upside down (so opposite way as yours) and I would basically notice if it would open because it would fall. I have to say after a month or two now the thing is stiff and wouldn't open, so it doesn't seem as great. I'm not an expert in disc locks but don't know what else I'd get.

Balls fell out of mine yesterday. This is the most expensive lock Abus produce. I am disgusted as Abus rate this as an amazing lock. I would expect significantly better quality from a German company. Absolutely terrible and an absolute rip off. Stay away from this lock and since this lock is Abus' flagship motorbike lock, stay away from this manufacturer.
