Abstract Acrylic Painting Techniques Using a Catalyst Wedge
This is a time-lapsed abstract acrylic painting demonstration on canvas. This is how I use fluid acrylics and a catalyst wedge to create movement and build layers. This is NOT a "How to Paint an Abstract Painting" video, but hopefully will give you inspiration and ideas for your own DIY abstract painting.
Adjust the settings on the video to watch a slower version and to gain a better understanding of my technique.
Tools:
Fluid Acrylics from TriArt and Golden
Free style flat brushes
Silicone catalyst wedge (W-06) from @Princeton Art & Brush Co Inc
Colours Used:
Iridescent Gold Deep
Titanium White
Carbon Black

I do use fluid acrylics. The first few layers are always wet and the last few layers are dry
Show!!!
Wow. I've now watched this amazing person create this brilliant abstract art, and I remember you just putting black on. Then a wet brush fade it out. The I was in amazement of how you done this. Again wow. Ps. Was it just brushes, ? No I see some kind of tool. What did you use. Thanks.

I didn't. These are fluid acrylics :)
I'm new to acrylic painting and have spent soooo much money on mostly Golden and Liquitex paints, but they weren't giving me the affect I was wanting. After watching a few of your videos, I realized it was because I needed to be using flow acrylic paint. I can't go out and buy all new paint since I have about 50 tubes of paint I've barely used. I did go and purchase Liquitex Flow Aid additive, Golden High Flow medium, Folkart floating medium and I had Floetrol already. What do you recommend using of the products I have for making a flow acrylic that will give me the affects in your video. I slowed down the video and its really helpful for learning. I've searched and searched but cannot find an answer, so any advice is appreciated. Thanks

Flow additive and water are best for thinning out regular acrylics :)
Love this. Your paint seems to be a bit fluid. Did you use watered down paint or simply sprayed the canvas with water? I would love for you to do an instructional video.

Absolutely adore your work. My question is do you mostly do wet-on-wet or do you sometimes let dry in between.

I would love to try those this technique and that was a cool, cool painting, but could you tell me this…. Each time you put down a certain color, did you let it dry before you went over it with another color? I hope you won’t mind answering this because like I said, I’d love to try it! 😊

Can we just add floetrol and water in acrylics to thin it down? Would that work fine for it?

Which liquid color brand do you use please ?
@CourtSeniorART

I use Liquitex, Golden and TriArt :)
Beautiful work. Did you have to stop and let some of the layers dry before working on the next bit? The video looks like one continuous take, but I see you wiping off parts you don't like and the layer underneath isn't coming of too.
@CourtSeniorART
3 жыл бұрын
Yes, some layers are dry - usually in the later stages
I’ve tried to load the catalyst wedge with liquid acrylic to swipe over other colors and I can’t get a good swipe. I run out of paint. How do you load the wedge?
@CourtSeniorART
3 жыл бұрын
I swipe through on a palette and then smear it on the canvas. They have to be fluid acrylics for it to work :)

I love this type of art but I'm doing something wrong! Apparently these take days or weeks! Cuz you must be waiting for one layer to dry before you do another RIGHT??? NOONE EVER EXPLAINS THIS! PLEASE HELP!!! THANKYOU ITS BEAUTIFUL!
@CourtSeniorART

The first few layers are always wet when I work with them to create various blending effects, the last few layers are dry. It doesn't take weeks, acrylics actually dry very quickly especially when applied in thin layers :)
Great! What is the surface you paint on? Is it hard and smooth, or it’s a regular canvas? Thank you 🙏🏻🌹
