The MC is the famus Japanese author Shūji Tsushima known by his pen name Osamu Dazai. Ozamu Dazai died, in a double suicide, in 1948 at the age of 39. On June 13, 1948, Dazai and Tomie his lover/student drowned themselves in the rain-swollen Tamagawa Canal, near his house. Their bodies were not discovered until six days later, on June 19, which would have been his 39th birthday. His grave is at the temple of Zenrin-ji, in Mitaka, Tokyo. @@justinsigler1565 I really don’t know much about his work. All I know he was a very famous and prolific Japanese author/writer who also wrote about himself. His death was fill with mystery and conspiracy theories.

I didn't realize this was a parody when I started watching (just an isekai with a twist) but as soon as they canonically referenced Truck-kun as the Selector I checked MAL and yes this IS a parody.

The backstory of this MC is his autobiographic book Ningen Shikkaku, No Longer Human, thats why the original title is Isekai Shikkaku Yes, its all sad and terrible, a pretty great book

This show has so much potential, I hope they don't mess it up 😅

This is basically a deconstruction of isekai tropes by putting in a main character who is very much like the real-life author Osamu Dazai. Dazai was famous for being depressive and trying to commit double suicide. The first time he tried, he lived and his partner died. The second double suicide, throwing themselves in a river, was successful (both died). He also tried to commit normal suicide at least once aside from those two attempts. He also wrote the novel Ningen Shikaku (No Longer Human) on which the Japanese title of this anime, Isekai Shikaku, is based.

If seen a lot manga handle that differently. One even said how the god of the world love human ears so beastkin had both sets. I'm not sure which I would find the creepiest. (A little off topic... If I had to pick a beastkin to live with I think I'd rather have Pursena (dog girl) instead of Rinia (cat girl). Pursena sees like she'd be a lot more loving and easy to live with than Rinia. I'm still not sure about their ears...)

Nomming on pills like they are Tic-tacs...... at the start its 1948, so post war and the occupation of Japan as well it being probable that he was conscripted into the army, could easily mess someone up. Both girls are gorgeous, love the designs, not because of the ears..... its not, ok..... I did read some of the manga which covered pretty much ep1 sometime ago but decided, ill watch the anime as it was then announced

Depressed and suicidal writer: yep, that's pretty much a cliché. I was on the fence about watching this show, but, after your reaction episode, I'm hooked. The idea of the nonplussed, noncommittal and begrudged hero looks good; and, from what I can see, it is chaotically funny (which, for me, it's a plus).I will pick this up and hope it keeps its momentum. And, I'm somewhat convinced that 1) the pills are infinitely replenished and is a key to feeding his Poison power, (that, and his demeanor); and 2) that the female character in the closing is his isekaied lover (I'm going with that for now).

Well, MC is based on a real person who was a depressed and suicidal writer. As the MC said in the episode, Dazai Osamu did try suicide 5 times, the last one (that was shown in the episode) was the one he died.

@@roseabe398 Sorry, wasn't trying to belittle the historical reference; I was just stating that it is a common trope in many stories, given that many authors throughout history fall into this category. I was a bit cautious at first about how it would translate; the quirky nature of the episode does make it feel like this parody of the isekai genre really deals with the underlying issues of being isekaied, and of how one, usually, sees the mc. Also, it gives the truck-kun motif an interesting reason of being; as well as exploring the aspects of many of the other characters one usually find in an isekai.

I like Toxic's character design. Did you finish Isekai Ojisan on Patreon?

I miss Bungo Stray Dogs again. 😭
