Brilliant song, I love both the Cold Chisel and the Farnsey versions! Steve Prestwich also wrote Flame Trees and Forever Now along with I got things to do, Since you’ve been gone- all his songs seem to be centred around nostalgia and moving on from old loves. For this reason I believe When the War is Over is no exception and is most likely about returning home to a familiar place to find time has moved on and you somehow have to live in the present in a place that still echoes the past. Flame trees has the same theme. When Steve passed away, Jimmy Barnes planted a flame tree in his honour in Canberra.

The emotion John puts into every song but this in particular is amazing, his voice still perfect and I think this is the best version of this song.

I saw the LRB line up with Prestwich and Farnham live, outdoors at Tamworth. I didn’t even know it was on. I heard a sound check while walking down the street and went to investigate. Ended up being one of the best concerts I’ve ever seen.

This is one of my two favourite songs by John the other being COOL CHANGE which is a Little River Band song that was sung by him when he fronted that band as the original lead singer had left , the song is the one I go to when I'm reminiscing about tropical vacations and ocean cruises that I took with my late wife, I play the song and I'm immediately transported back to those wonderful days of peace and relaxation, even if you don't react to it you would be doing yourself a disservice not to listen to it .

John is, and has always been, completely and utterly faithful to his wife Jill. His family is the reason he stayed in Australia. Lisa is one of his backup singers, has been with him for 30+ years and he considers her family. ❤ John is more than a brilliant singer. He is humble, comedic and our heart.

John kept his voice for the whole of his career.

The respect John shows towards his band members is so obvious. He always acknowledges them both verbally (Brett at the end) or by his body language (the way he stood off to the side and looked at Chong during the introduction). The fact so many of them were with him for years reinforces that.

This is true I just watched the classic jack live DVD and wow! It was magic! He praises everyone he works with and it definitely does show. I'm glad I got to learn so much about him and he truly is a legend. I just did We're Not Angel's from that DVD and it brought me to tears.

@@ShaneAlanGower Classic Jack would have to be 'one of' the all time 'great' concerts. Not just in Australia, but world wide. John has the ability to make his concerts feel extremely personal and more like a jam session at his place with a few friends or a family gathering than a big concert in front of 20,000+ people. No one else I've seen over the last 30 years (Australian and International, some VERY big names in the music industry) has come close to that sensation/connection. I'm so glad I got to see him several times over his career. He's definitely a consummate performer, very down to earth and genuine. His recycled dad jokes also add to his character. Definitely agree about him being a legend.

Amazing how alternative versions of the song hit you differently emotionally. Barnsey and Chisel’s version is powerhouse but John’s version is awesome. ❤

This song was about young men and women fighting a war they don't want to and leaning on each other and using each others shoulder. They need each other to survive and return home safe.

Shane, this song is about war. It's about a young man coming home from the Vietnam war with PTSD and having to try to deal with his emotions and how our boys were treated both by the Government and also by the people.

The song is about a soldier returning from war and feeling out of step with civilian life.

I think the best songs are the ones where people can divine meaning to any events in their lives. This song may resonate with people in a tumultous relationship, people who have been in wars as both civilians and soldiers. That is the beauty of truly great music and lyrics. One size fits all, for decades and decades......:)
