    I think there's a good amount of discussion to be had here. If you don't play, then lets and strokes aren't interesting - they're just annoying. If you don't play, the subtlety of the corner shots and the length is a foreign concept and it doesn't look very interesting. I think the close calls for lets/strokes makes the sport really frustrating from an excitement perspective - when it is close and the match is swayed by a judge's call instead of the skill of a player then I get a little bit off put by the whole affair. There is also something about the movement that seems to suggest "slow", but I know enough about squash to know that the jerky movement isn't beneficial; to an outside it might look like that movement is not very athletic when in reality it's extremely skilled in the fact that it's not wasteful energy-wise. I love the sport. It's a great sport.

    I don't like how Gaultier throws the ball in the corner rather than passing it to his opponent. Also his celebrations and throwing his racket around make him look like an idiot. Aboulghar kept his composure and was definitely the better sportsman

    Yeah im not a big fan of the racket throwing, but i do like the way he applauds his opponent on their good plays. That is a definitely good sportsman-like behaviour, even if he kind of undoes it a bit with his other antics haha.

    Also, i'm not sure you could say it was good sportsmanship to just leave the court without acknowledging your opponent after losing what was such an amazing game. Whether or not you liked Gaultiers antics, a good sportsman would at least acknowledge their opponent after such a game. As soon as he knew he lost he turned his back immediately and went for the door.

    Gaultier is always polarising, he's a marmite player. But whether you hate him or love him, he'll get a reaction from everyone, a debate, sometimes an argument. His heist against Mo Shorbagy was even better/worse, but that's the point, we remember it, and this match too. I love players with better ethics, but the sport needs players like Gaultier.

    I used to play Squash in the 80s and 90s. I avidly watched Geoff Hunt, Jahangir and Jansher play their epic matches. Once, I (as a starry-eyed teen) even played a single set against Chris Dittmar in his prime. Is it my imagination, or do these modern players not seem to TRY to chase the tough shots as much as the older guys used to? It seems they’re more willing to ‘concede and conserve’ rather than go all out and wear their opponents out through dogged determination. Or am I imagining this?

  • @argablarga

    @argablarga

    4 жыл бұрын

    I think it's a combination of a bit of concede and conserve and also the racquets today allow them to deaden shots and do fakes better than racquets back in the 80s.

    Jdm262, because they are both right-handed players, their backhand is on the left hand side. Playing up and down the backhand wall takes more skill than the forehand, and puts more pressure on your opponent. Hence why they tend to stick to the left hand side.
