I agree 69k is a lot of money, but that is compared to its "siblings" which are being sold > 80k

Great review. We had a coast from the VW dealers at Sheffield. It was a demo model which when we picked it up in April 2021 is never been driven. Our only additions were 17 inch wheels and that the top top had an opening front window. We would never have changed it, except that a drunken driver destroyed, our garden flew 30 yards in the air and landed upside down on our drive on top of the camper. With some relief, we found that the campervan was written off as it was going to take well over a year to mend and was probably unmendable and so have just gone to the good folk at Harbour Creek Down on Hayling Island. We have replaced it with a similar age ocean and to be honest or rather nervous about the electrically operated roof as we found that the assisted manually operated roof, was extremely efficient and one less thing to go wrong. If I was born, I knew I would’ve been very tempted by this. Great review

Rear mudflap fitting is a bit 4th grade school….but I like the colour and the standard wheels look good to me But the sleeping factor of two sleeping together I don’t get…..that’s a dream by the marketing department

Good luck with VW when the soft close fails…. £90 part, and a bill for £1100 total for fitting! VW quality has gone South in recent years, and there are better vans out there for similar or even less money.

There is an amazing offer on at the moment that expires on 31st October. Definitely the best offers I’ve ever seen! They also apply to the Grand model as well. Whether the California order book will close on 31st as well is not known, but if you are considering a purchase definitely speak to Breeze ASAP! Get a quote from Drive the Deal first as a price guide and then speak to Breeze 👍. That’s my recommendation.

Time for MAN to come out with a small campervan quick whilst VW have lost the plot

Another good review. I took delivery of a Surf last Saturday 30th Sept. (also from Breeze VW in Poole. - Good knowledgeable people & a good deal as well). Personally, I couldn't see any point in spending more money for an Ocean either. Particularly, as I dislike digital instruments. Since 2016 I've owned a T6 Beach and a T6.1 Coast. The only item I do miss is folding mirrors, which you can not spec. on a Surf. And, as for fog lamps - I've yet to drive my California's in fog! Equally, I've never curbed a 16" alloy wheel! Given the advent of the new T7 (Multi van) which is based on a Car Chassis. I thought this was my last chance to upgrade to another proper ' classic' VW campervan. Furthermore, it would appear that 'customer spec.' orders for T6.1 California's will close on 31st Oct. So, get in quick!

There is no information to suggest the order book will close on 31st. That’s just heresay and people said the same during the April offers!

Back in April the T7 (Multivan) California Concept replacement hadn't been previewed and customer orders of T6.1 vans hadn't ceased. Given that orders are generally taking 6 months for the current California models. That will take us into May 2024. By which time the factory will also need to be made ready for assembling the 'New' T7 California or else the Launch/release date won't be in 2024! All of which was explained to me by one of the salespeople when I collected my T6.1 California Surf on 30th September. Additionally, no one is really expecting VW to officially announce the end of a model. An example of that is; The VW Up, which ceased production 3 months ago, but VW only officially announced that this week. Honestly, it isn’t just here-say. @@CaliLeaks

@@user-de2pq6yq2v My bet is that the order book will continue a bit longer, maybe until the end of the year, but we all know the end is soon nigh! If it closes on the 31st I will come back here and give you some kudos 😀. In the meantime the current offers are brilliant for those looking to purchase. By the way, if you received your Cali recently, you will have the leaking bellows for sure and likely already aware. Hopefully, the newly announced bellows will resolve the issues for all affected, but I ended up returning mine unfortunately.

@@CaliLeaks You may be right on both fronts. - Re. The bellows. The (unofficial) reason why my Surf was stuck on the end of the production-line awaiting a part was - wait for it. - The bellows! Yes, apparently my California was awaiting its bellows. After taking delivery. I noticed that the fabric at the front (the zip-out part), is a slightly different creamy white to the rest and the texture was again very slightly different. I'm not sure if that is normal or it suggests it was replaced during production. In any event, I normally put a 'Cali Cover on my elevating roof if the weather reports imminent rain. So, it may be a while before I find out if my van will suffer from leaks or not. In the meantime, I hope to receive some Kudos in due course!

I think it is a very nicely put together camper, although I would hope that front fog lamps are also an option. However, for those for whom height is not a restriction, I think it will face fierce competition from the new Bailey Endeavour that has more for almost the same price (2 berth model). There is already a detailed review (overview really) out there on KZread by someone who joined the Bailey expedition to the Sahara early this year. For those who want a campervan that can also serve as a daily driver, then this VW California Surf T6 is an excellent choice. Just a pity that VW do not offer these models on the Japanese market.

Nice sales pitch, but I'll never be able to afford a VW and it is hard to see where the VW premium goes (other than on the badge). Sounds like it is a beach without the hard to source beach extras, maybe that is why the full configurator is not publicly available.

Will these vans ever make it to Canada?

I like the surf but it seems to be very similar in price to an ocean. I got a quote from the configurator a while back and the guys at VW sent me back a comparison between the surf I'd specced and an ocean and there was so much more included as standard on the ocean for not much difference in price. Things that were standard on the ocean like satnav and reversing camera couldn't be added to the surf either.

I think some people prefer to save some money and don’t want the higher specs like the sat nav, that’s where the Surf is a better deal for them.

Apparently the surf was put together to avoid features which were causing delays on oceans and to get rid of parts stock in the run out of the 6.1. The surf price at rrp works out cheaper than the beach once you've specd the beach, the beach lacks toys in a big way!! My dealer recommended against the surf, saying that people who want an ocean will buy an ocean, hence why the coast was pulled, no one wanted it.

Nice review, I recently priced a Beach here in Ireland and they start at 95k, I wonder if this will be over the 100k mark, I would love one but the nugget max is worth considering. What is the position on gas cylinders for this van in the future?

The Beach is €67,000 and the Ocean is €86,000 not to mention the extra 3 grand for DSG. I’d even love a Beach but I think it’s out of reach 😢

Yeah you do only get steel ones but they’re actually not too bad, nicer than some of the alloys. I’ll be retiring at 66 in 7 years and like the idea of travelling around Europe for a month or so, even the cheapest one will do………

Things have come a long way.. I'm still making do with an old 2002 here in the USA, because God forbid they sell the California in America! 😢

bargain of the century- is a little over the top

You also loose a lot of the smart driving sensor bit. Mostly all the stuff that is very supply constrained. Anyone like me that bought an ocean over last couple of years will know how many parts were making the delay a year. I heard that surf were being made for much faster delivery as it was a spec they had a good supply chain of parts. Ocean has so many things requiring very special semiconductor parts, it was a very fragile supply chain. Surf is UK only, according to the California on tour app. I expect they see a lot of demand for high end and given no coast, this opens up the supply given the limited time before the T6.1 EOL.

The Surf seems to be a replacement to the Coast. Albeit a slightly higher spec base model than the Coast was.

70k van & its fitted with the cheapest ditch finders they have available……

new vw and value don’t fit. buy something else and diy
