Abraham Lincoln Surprises People with His Lawyer Skills - Drunk History
Комедия
Before he was president, Abraham Lincoln was a brilliant but perennially underestimated lawyer who was mocked for his appearance.
About Drunk History:
Based on the popular web series, Drunk History is the liquored-up narration of our nation's history. Host Derek Waters, along with an ever-changing cast of actors and comedians, travels across the country to present the rich tales that every city in this land has to offer. Booze helps bring out the truth. It's just that sometimes the truth is a little incoherent.

Surely, and what should be pointed out is that Abe Lincoln was a liberal republican, ie the first multiparty potus... he was shot not for “slavery”, but so the US Capital Establishment, a conservative entity, could retain two party dominion.... There hasn’t been a viable 3rd party / multiparty since.... There are no liberal political parties when they all operate on capitalism, a conservative construct.... The political terms don’t mean what we’ve all been taught they mean... Or haven’t you noticed?
@Battleschnodder
4 жыл бұрын
What do you mean Lincoln being a liberal republican made him multiparty? The Republicans were the more liberal party at the time. If anything, him being a particularly liberal Republican made him more entrenched in one side.
@72marshflower15
4 жыл бұрын
Battleschnodder ...Lincoln represented the first party outside the duopoly that gripped America at the time... his party was literally third party, ie multiparty , which is then dispersive and liberalism is dispersive in nature... Conservatism accrues power as liberalism disperses it. It’s literally in the derivation of the terms themselves... “The republicans” were the first “dispersive” party of the country and the era... and as such, exercised revolutionary power of the day... Course, conservatism owns the definitions today due to their reich wing linguistic eugenics known as id/entity politics and is why shit is spot on backwards.

well In those days It wasn't uncommon for the legal teams to go out and brawl before or after the trial, and apparently Lincoln used to kick people's asses in trial and then literally kick them behind the court house afterward. I believe it was it was the firm he was with after this trial where one of his co-workers basically said despite being tall and lanky and not that intimidating Lincoln could really both throw and take a punch and he was quite useful in the fights that could break out. Though I might be wrong on the timing of that but basically Lincoln was a good lawyer and fighter apparently.

Lincoln was an Illinois trial lawyer, mostly for criminal law and litigation. He had a good deal of success amidst the circle of legal experts and ran for State Senate. He was among the state's most ardent abolitionists, and joined with the then-newly formed Republican Party, a leftist anti-slavery organzation that was meant to be an alternative to the Whigs who wouldn't stand against slavery. Eventually, he was elected in Illinois, and after serving in small government, ran for President. He made a name for himself by saying that he didn't believe in popular soverignty- he didn't think slavery should be left to public referendum, but that politicians had a duty to dismantle the institutions of slavery.

The "actors" in drunk history aren't meant to look like the actual person they are playing as. The story is that. Lincoln was called to a case in Cincinnati. He was supposed to be part of a law team, notably including Edwin Stanton who later would become his War Secy. When Lincoln arrived, the other lawyers began to abuse him like the schoolyards bullies over his frame, face, outlook. The called him ill dressed, an ape, à clown, à buffoon. They decided to not read his pleading memo and forbid him to be at the council with them. Lincoln was intensely depressed. He stayed in the courtroom on public benches. He was humiliated and mortified and told the host of the inn he stayed in he would never come back to Cincinnati again. Think about it. Ugly people are more sensitive human beings and have more feelings. They crave for recognizing. Don't bully them.

@GerryBolger
4 жыл бұрын
My ex girlfriend's father was a history teacher and also a serious lush at the weekends. We had dinner at their place one time that basically turned into a drinking session. My ex told her drunk history teaching father that I'm a nerd about ancient Rome and it was like years of holding in drunken history talk just flowed from him. Now he wasn't as drunk as the folks in these videos but he wasn't too far off, the man could knock back whiskey like it was milk. Once he understood that I knew the basics of Roman history we talked about our favourite Emperor's and why. Mine is Vespasian by the way... It's fun talking to a drunken historian, not as funny as these videos but informative and they talk about it with more passion when they're not constrained by ridiculous teaching limitations (or sober). The hardest part about breaking up with her was that I'd never speak to her dad again. I miss that dude...

@@crumbum2 Well this guy was genuinely funny with or without drink but he did say that he hated the way history was taught. I assume that history teachers are told to teach specific eras in specific ways, which must stifle them. Now if you do happen to talk to a drunken history teacher, you'll see that they are passionate about it and get excited by imparting their knowledge. When they're told how and what to teach, it's easy to see how that passion can be dampened.
