When Abraham Lincoln (Tom Amandes) is elected President, he brings only one friend to Washington: his banjo-playing, pistol-weilding law partner, Ward Hill Lamon (Lea Coco). When the first assassination attempt occurs in 1861, Lamon appoints himself the President's bodyguard. From this unique perspective, Lamon witnesses every aspect of Lincoln's fiery trial as Commander-in-Chief, soothing his tormented soul, and saving him from repeated attempts on his life. Lamon even introduces Lincoln at the Gettysburg Address. Lamon is not present on the fateful night at Ford's Theatre in 1865 because Lincoln sends him on a mission, yet it is Lamon who redefines that tragic event in a surprising and uplifting manner.

    His voice certainly sounded nothing like that. It was high and shrill. Delivery is probably accurate though. Not precise of course but accurate

Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle-field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this. But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate-we can not consecrate-we can not hallow-this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here.     Early in my teenage years I memorized Lincoln's Gettysburg Address because I really liked it. Now after 2 tours in Nam, 27 years in uniform (most in the PA Army National Guard), a heart attack that should have killed me, a heart transplant 5 years ago that gave me a new life, and 72 years old I am surprised that I can still remember a lot of the words. They are still powerful words and brought a tear to my eyes. My biggest disappointment is that most of the people in power have no idea what this country is really about. Be safe and try to have fun.

    Well stated sir. I myself was born in 57, Ex USAF. Just a tad too young to have gone to Nam, but served during Desert Storm. Some of the things I remember verbatim to this day is the Boy Scout Motto "Be Prepared", Boy Scout Oath, and Scout Law. I have grown to not quite like the calling out of "God", because there are many beliefs that are good. But I do think some moral compass is needed growing up. Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean and Reverent. Just now from memory as I approach 64 years of age. Not bad things to live by, not that I claim to have done them all the time.

    My history teacher told us that everyone there expected a speech that would last an hour or so, and that Lincoln didn't know what he was going to say and wrote the Gettysburg address on the ride there. It was short, but it is one of the greatest speeches of all time.

    Apparently it isn't true that he wrote it on the ride there, and that is a common misconception. There are 5 copies of the speech written in Lincoln's handwriting - 2 of which were written and delivered before he gave the speech. The handwriting in all of the written copies is consistent with a firm writing surface (not hastily written on a train), and it is well documented that Lincoln prepared major speeches well in advance of giving them.

    As a Chinese from mainland China, I heard this great speech from my high school English teacher in 2010.Since then, I am encouraged by a spirit that freedom and democracy are a great pursuit.I read the story of philosophical history and people fight for freedom.It is Encouraging me.But it also made me feel pain, because people around me did not realize the pursuit of freedom that a person should have.I tried to arouse more people to pursue freedom, but I drew warnings from the police and the authorities, which made my life full of risks.I am full of anger, but I know what I want-a free and democratic China as a member of the world.I know this is a very difficult thing, and I will not give up.This speech gave me great courage not to forget my goal.I hope that one day we will embrace each other in the free world and share my story.Now April 2022 there are still many people fighting for freedom in the world, and hope you don't forget that I am one of them.Thank you again for President Lincoln's speech.Bless you all.

    My 7 th grade English teacher, Miss Snow, insisted we memorize this and then recite it in front of the class. It was traumatic, but I still remember it. My great Grandfather fought in the Civil War and I am proud of that.

    I am an old man now, when I was a young man I worked at the Arlington Funeral Home. There was an old man there that was a funeral director. He told me that when he was a young man in Virginia he talked to an old man who was there at Gettysburg when Lincoln gave this speech. He said that Lincoln really emphasized the word "people" and not the prepositions "of, by, and for the people" like so many quote that speech today. So...I heard it from a man that heard it from a man, who was actually there that day the speech was given by Abraham Lincoln!

    And he said what was spoken would "not long be remembered..." Yet here we are in 2021, almost 157 years later, and it's still one of the most poignant and inspiring speeches of that time period, as well as one of the most used for varied educational classes for institutes of higher learning.

    Abraham Lincoln had no idea of the importance or the lasting impact this address would have on us for centuries, rather than decades or scores, after he spoke these words. Always provokes strong emotions of love and patriotism when I hear it spoken.

    I've lived in Illinois all of my life. Whenever I see a license plate it says "Land of Lincoln". Makes me proud. But I think it should go further. Not just Illinois, but the USA itself should call itself "Land of Lincoln". He, and MLK, imo, have been the greatest that America has ever produced.

    I consider this the finest rendition of the Gettysburg Address. The pacing is spot on. The stress on the important points emphasizes their importance. Every other performance sounds like the speaker is simply reciting lines. Amandes, however, actually sounds like someone who really understands what Lincoln was saying.

    +Gerry Gentile, thanks! Tom Amandes certainly did understand what he was saying. He grew up in Illinois, and cared deeply about Mr. Lincoln's legacy. He said he really connected with it when he took a trip to Springfield and walked "home" from "his office" after nightfall.

    the actor portraying Lincoln looked healthy and very well rested Lincoln had a form of smallpox at this time he would have looked very exhausted very thin and much older than his years Lincoln was born in Kentucky he's voice was strong but high pitched with a slight Southern drawl he towered over everyone on the stage I didn't hear any passion in this actor's voice I've heard some much better performance's, it is the greatest speech by president (government of the people for the People by the people) when did we lose that now it's government of the rich for the rich by the rich I see another civil war looming in our future we're still not free I feel like a puppet on a string Trump hasn't released his tax statements for a very good reason he pays no income tax and Hillary Clinton should be in prison

    I have read many speeches and acted many important historical people in speeches and quotes. . . .But there is something about this speech that makes cry inside! When I read it in a college speech class I noticed everybody felt a deep silence and a sadness that gave everybody in my class a resolve to a stillness of great respect for every word (It is one of the greatest speeches of all time).

    His second inaugural address is also very good. This actor falls short for me to be honest. Abraham was a magnificent man and a great politician. But most of all he was virtuous and honest man. We could all learn a few things from him and Ulysses Grant. Two of Americas true heroes and also my personal heroes. Men of unshakable honor.

    I'm totally moved by three American speeches, or parts of them anyway. This address by Lincoln, FDR's first inaugural line, "the only thing we have to fear is fear itself", and JFK's "ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country."

    And it was over so fast. The photographer of the event was not ready with his bulky gear, and the picture he took showed Lincoln stepping down to take his seat after he already finished speaking.

Obama: "the true strength of our nation comes not from the might of our arms or the scale of our wealth, but from the enduring power of our ideals: democracy, liberty, opportunity and unyielding hope" 3. JFK: "ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country" 4. FDR: "the only thing we have to fear is fear itself"

    P/S every time I hear that address it brings some tears as my Great Grandpapa was wounded at the battle of Chancellorsville in April of 1863 luckily he survive got married and had four children which one was my Grandfather, thanks Pops!

    The speaker before Lincoln, Edward Everett, was one of the most popular orators of his day. He spoke for two hours. Yet Everett admitted to Lincoln, "I wish that I could flatter myself that I had come as near to the central idea of the occasion, in two hours, as you did in two minutes."

    This speech was quoted by our professor Dr.Ramachandran in his Humor club speech...he mentioned that speech is just not the words but we must penetrate into the words by living internally with the flow of words... Really Dr Ramachandran sir is an eminent speaker.🙏💯👏💖😇💖👌👏🤗😇

    I really like how this is one of the few presentations of the event which accurately reflects the audience (and nation's" lukewarm reaction to the speech. Good research! I may yet have to watch this film afterall

    The pacing and stress of these words is excellent in this version. Although, from what I've read, Lincoln had a higher-pitched voice, with a "southern" twang" to it. Also, from at least one newspaper account of this speech, it was interrupted several times with applause.
