    Hahaha, cheers. Yeah, whenever I do one of the critters from the caves in the story book, I seem to default to that voice.

    I played this once and was surprised at how good it is. This is one of the many games that go in the "If my collection wasn't too big already I'd get it" collection.

    Amazing video. To the point and immediately does the review before explaining how to play, then comments and opinion. Love it. Also I so much love that you immediately mention if it has or not solo mode and if its cooperative or competitive. Immediate suscribed.

    Just ordered this game on Amazon to play with my family during this quarantine time because we are going stir crazy. Can wait for it to come. Seems like it might keep us entertained a while between trying to learn it and actually playing it. 😊

    I have Near & Far and love it. I don't really feel compelled to pick this up, especially if the story aspect is lighter since that's one of my favorite things about Near & Far.

    Totally fair. Above and Below does have some fun in it with its story stuff, and I'd recommend playing it once at a cafe/con/friends as it is the back story to near and far. But if the story stuff is your jam, Near and Far is much better suited for you.

  • @ThomasLuongo

    And a far more balanced game when all the mini-expansions are added to the point salad, especially the workers from Near and Far who all come with a bed (b/c they are explorers) and the potential for scoring extra points for bacon sandwiches. The base game is, I feel, way to optimized for exploring because the rewards are so much better. Otherwise, good review and a great gateway for younger players to get into heavier euros. My daughter loved this game at 9, for example, and made it easier for me to introduce her to heavier games later.

    @@3MBG Groves yes, but also if you can find the second storybook and mini expacs from the Kickstarter, they really help spread the points around. I got them as addons to the Amber Mines Kickstarter and I really like what they add to the game.

    @@3MBG Islebound is my favorite of Ryan's games. It's a very elegant action/selection game. Easy to teach, very replayable. Played it last night again and it still holds up for me. Combat may need a slight tweak upward in power but other than that it is smooth once you get the hang of it. No story elements, straight medium-weight euro, that is, I think, criminally under-appreciated. There is only the Metropolis expac, which is needed to keep variety up and the 'book' strategy under control.

    Not sure how anyone else feels, but to me this game seems too short. I feel like I'm just getting my engine going and then *boom* round 7 and the game is over. I've only played with two players though so maybe this would be different in a 4 player game.

  • @3MBG

    @3MBG

    Fascinating, one of my patreon people said the exact same thing about two player. All my plays were 3 or 4 player, so not to sure. I wonder if a lack of trading hurts it at 2 player

    @@3MBG That and the story telling feels kind of half-baked because you don't get as much of it as I'm sure you would in a 4 player game.

    I was disappointed by Above & Below. It tried to do two things, and it didn't excel with either. The tableau building was simplistic, and the cave exploration felt disjointed and meaningless.

    That's fair. No game is for everyone and I can see how walking that tightrope can lead to the game feeling like it doesn't do well at either. I personally dig it, but can see your POV pretty clearly.
