I grew up on England and when I was first exposed to Yorubas I developed a deep respect for these people. At school, all we ever saw of black people were negative images like people dancing around a fire in the bush or black people as slaves. Just a few glimpses of Yoruba culture was enough to spark an interest in me to learn more about the black race and not feel ashamed. Yorubas, I have to respect them. They're not perfect but they are upright and dignified in my eyes.

As a brazlilian black woman, its so interesting see our roots beeing presenting... I must to say that all thise gods, such as Oxum, Olorum, Xango, Obatalá are for brazilian people, gods of Candomblé ( the brazilian afro religion). And just the people who studies Africanismus know that it is YORUBA GODS... Thanx a lot for this video!

Ogun, Sango, Oya, Obatala etc were all human beings, but heroes during their lifetime, whose exceptional feats made people to deify them even after their deaths and consult their spirit as a means to commune with the unseen supreme and most powerful God, Elédùmare or Jehovah. Sango for instance was the 4th Alaafin of Oyo and the husband of Osun and Oya. Yoruba's are polytheism and believe only in Elédùmare. We are not pagans and the lesser gods are just like angels or intermediaries whom we appeal to in reaching God.

Are they angels or ancestors...why do you keep mixing these words which have totally different meanings...if these people are ancestors then logically they can't be considered angels...and if Oludemere is the only Supreme unseen absolute then the tradition is monotheistic.....

@@TheLastOutlaw289 firstly, I never called the heroes angels, you did. I said they were deified being that is not a new thing across Africa. The use if the term polytheism was supposed to be preceded by adjective *Aren't & not Are.* That was a typo error. The names mentioned above in my post are human beings and not angels. Yorubas revere them because of their immense contributions in our society. I wonder why that should irritate you. After all, you are not an African, so why are you uptight on our matter.

The deities--Ogun or Shango are our pedigrees or ancestors or divinity-philosophers. They are NOT Gods. They are messengers who are answerable to Creator-Philosopher Olodumare/God. Let's take note and let us be enlightened in this 21st century.

Yemi-d Prince They are ancestors to some, and gods in other accounts. What we must be aware of its the fact that the Yoruba culture is the only black African culture with a pantheon of Gods.

I had a question about the Yoruba culture, so I know that there are masquerades to celebrate certain occasions, but I was wondering if masks were also worn for other things other then celebrations. Did warriors ever wear masks?

Very nice video Faith! Brief and very informative. However on that aspect of Dobale and Ikunle, do we do it to greet our parents/elders because we worship them, or out of respect? What is the difference between the two and Iforibale?

We don't worship any human being by kneeling down to great our elders. We greet our parents and elders and friend, we don't worship them. Yorubas are known all over the world for respect of their parents, leaders, siblings and both known and unknow person.

Yoruba ppl on believe in 1 God called Olorun, Olodumare/Eledumare ie Odu to mare meaning d Supreme, 1 n Only. while Sango, Ogun, Oshun r deities pedigrees ancesstors also rfd to as Orisha Eniti Ori Sha meaning special picked ppl sent by God to lead also like Angels, Prophets or some1 who created, forsee/forsaw something new, ppl who can or predicts d future, heal sicknesses n most of d time ppl who also see, encountered & or believe in d supreme God; 1God. Also light or darker skin does not mean or equates ur Ethnicity there was no concrete prove on dat. Dats just colo mentality, some Blacks claiming or wanting to b White thinking makes dem better than others, Blacks to b exact. So funny some things ve heard other Blacks, Africans calling/saying Ghanians r Black or too Black wyl some also gets on d defensive trading words I;m lighter....hm....lol...Oh ! well we all kno whats playing out here but regardless, what any1 thinks we all mixed: Colors, different shades of color beautiful colors like Rainbow. Dats y we called colored not piggy, pale or snow man. Black is Beautiful always is n always will no matter what.

That is not true. Yoruba are known to the most mixed people in the world. We marry who pleases us and who love us. For example, in my own family, we have Ibo, Igala, Ashanti, Fanti, Dagomba, Swed, American,Moshe and etc has both brothers-in-laws and sister-in-laws. There is a tribe in Nigeria who dosen't like or abhore to marry outside their tribe and that is the Ibo (Igbo) tribe.

Helly George they will Mary who they love. They expect the wife to know how to cook their food traditional food. There like a clean house at least mine does. There like you to be educated and work hard. They expect the mother to make sure the children are educated again that is what mine expects. I married my husband at the age of 19 I am 53 now. Married life is never easy. Family especially the elders are treated with the utmost of respect. If you don’t get along with your in-laws there can be a lot of difficulty between you and your husband.
