In February 2024, Magyar Péter's name surfaced in connection with the pedophile scandal in Bicske involving Kónya Endre. He is the ex-husband of Varga Judit, former Minister of Justice, who shortly after the resignation of Novák Katalin, the President of the Republic, and Varga Judit herself resigned from her positions in state-owned companies. He also voiced sharp criticisms against certain members of the government, particularly regarding Antal Rogán, whom he claims is largely responsible for the erosion of the rule of law in Hungary. In addition, based on personal experiences and observations, he has been articulating numerous criticisms for weeks regarding concerns about the "System of National Cooperation" (NER) and serious government abuses.
On March 15th, he announced the flag-raising ceremony for his new political movement, "Stand Up, Hungarians!" on Andrássy Avenue. There, he spoke about the artificially divided society created by the NER, opposition parties controlled by the government for financial gain, and the significant transfer of the country's wealth to Fidesz-affiliated foundations. Magyar announced the creation of a new, influential, and unbuyable political force, and read out its 12-point program. By April 2, 2024, although his party had not yet fully formed, Magyar Péter's party, the Respect and Freedom Party, was already polling at 11% among the entire population and 15% among party supporters. Since then, the National Electoral Commission has registered Magyar Péter's party for the European parliamentary and local elections on June 9th.
Therefore, Magyar's popularity surge from two months ago continues to soar. Tens of thousands of people perceive his criticisms of Fidesz as genuine revelations, even though he hasn't said anything that hasn't already been reported in the media in recent years or echoed by prominent figures in the opposition parties. Nevertheless, people are flocking to Magyar Péter's rallies and marches in the hopes of something they haven't seen in anyone since April 2022.
