    Pro tip for looping/pad sections. If you set the time signature of that section so that the length of 1 measure is the length of the chord progression (16/4 or 24/8 or whatever you need), you can manipulate the Ableton to jump ahead at the end of a chord progression, not just the end of a pre-set number of bars. Because for all Ableton knows it's just a really long measure. You lose the accent click for that section, but you can get transitions insanely smooth.

    Another benefit with the midi click is creating different subdivisions within the same song, and automating click volume. For example, maybe there is a part of the song that tends to rush or the click gets a bit off - I can customize the click for that section only and then have it return to normal once we are past that section

    Jake, I'm curious if you will be doing another masterclass video at some point showing how you are actually building some of the advanced things in your show? We went through that video as well as this one and both videos are more about what you are doing than how and there are some things we'd really love to learn that we aren't currently doing, such as your Tempo track to automate tempo changes and how you are notating in the Markers track as well as a few others. Or do you have any resources you used to learn how to do these that you could point me to? We've been using ableton for 10 years but just in session view and realized that there's so much more we could be doing to help ourselves out here. Thanks!

    Would love to see you guys give your thoughts on using other DAWs. We use logic for our tracks rig and our livestream broadcast. Works great, and has a lot of the same capabilities as Ableton with using Meta Events, midi cues, etc. Obviously all of these tools are great , I just really appreciate Logic when on Apple devices given how well it is optimized for the M1 chips and any OS updates. Also the Logic Control ipad app is soooooo good for cueing tracks or mixing.

    From what I've seen, they're sold out on Ableton Live. I started using Studio One, primarily because they have a free version (limited to one output). It wasn't until after I had used Studio One for a while that I installed the trial of Ableton Live. Based on what these guys are doing with it, it looks like Ableton has many of the same features that Studio One has, but I don't like the user interface in Ableton. I keep thinking that there must be something that Ableton Live does that Studio One doesn't, given that these guys keep using it, but I haven't seen it yet.

    @@TimothyFish The SHOW Page on Studio One is intended for live use, and can run Click, Cues, any number of tracks, Visual Song Sections, plus live instruments (ala Mainstage), and can be MIDI Controlled. We are using it and finding our workflow. It doesn't do everything that LIVE does (i.e. not control lighting or Pro Presenter cues). And it's Performance Page options are conceived for different purposes and not quite for Prime Time yet for Worship Leaders. But the basic interface (while cluttered) works well. It's kept us from needing LIVE so far.

    @@redemptionhillchurch-whitt2250, not being able to send cues to Propresenter is kind of a big deal. My workaround is that I wrote a program in C++ that shows a list of songs and when you select each song, it opens the song in Studio One. I suppose that if the show page accepts cues then one could trigger both Studio One and Propresenter at the same time, but I my current workaround requires minimal setup. If each of the songs have been used before, it would be as simple as adding them to the list in the same order as the order of service.

    @@TimothyFish session view does lots of things on the fly that you can NOT do with other DAWs. But I am a professional musician using ableton more as an instrument, not just for running tracks for church. It depends on your use for the software. A lot of your comments here seem to have a tone of ableton being an overpriced or bad software? If you don’t use it for anything but running some church tracks and lighting then, yeah lots of things do that cheaper lol but it doesn’t make ableton “not worth the money” for someone who utilizes it for live performances or to write music or perform live.

    We're using Reaper. It's waaaay cheeper than Ableton (unlimited free trial or 60$ for full licence) Tracks can be opened in multiple tabs and you don't even need to build a specific project for each week. You can create markers to navigate inside the song, loop sections, skip sections etc. Use foot control to switch between tabs and the best part is - previous tab will keep playing the outro while the next tab starts -which provides seamless transitions. Everything can be automated. A string of custom actions can be built and assigned to any key or midi controller button. Midi cues can be sent to control lyrics and lighting. There is huge community and ton of resources to learn from in case you ever get stuck. I honestly don't see a single reason why everyone is hyping about the Ableton and paying outrageous money for a tool that takes much longer to build your set from week to week.

  • @TimothyFish

    I've been using Studio One. The free and lower cost versions allow for multiple songs to be open and you can switch between then with Ctrl-Tab, but the full ($399) version includes a Show Page that you can import your songs into for a show. I didn't consider either method to be ideal for a church setting, but they may be better than what it looks like these guys are doing to get Ableton to work.

    We really don't use a lot of backing tracks, we use mostly a click and pad because our Worship leader likes being spontaneous when doing a Sunday service. And whenever we do use a track for a specific song I always have a click that keeps playing forever when the song ends that way we can keep playing. It's just whatever you feel the song should be.

    I feel like ableton structures your service too much. I could be wrong, but I feel like with it not being easy to change what you’re doing it leaves no room for God to sweep over the service and just be spontaneous. I really want to try it, so i don’t mean to come across rude or anything, but how would you be able to be spontaneous and use it?

  • @davidhanson9280

    @davidhanson9280

    So, Ableton is actually the most flexible out of any DAW, specifically for live performance. While the Churchfront guys don't use it for spontaneous moments often, there are different things you can do if you want to change things in the moment. Things like using session view, where every clip can loop indefinitely until the next one is triggered, or programming buttons for next section or repeating sections is very doable. The REAL challenge would be trying to accomplish that in Logic or Pro Tools.

    Hey Adam how do you setup the guide cues to be midi?

  • @eddiecarrizales

    @eddiecarrizales

    2 жыл бұрын

    You basically need to find guide samples you like or create your own and then trigger them on an instrument rack. Like each sample or guide would be triggered by a midi clip set to a certain note. Then you can save those clips in a folder and you can drag them into your set list on a track with that instrument rack loaded and the midi clips will trigger the samples. It’s a bit cumbersome to setup, and then you have to replace the guides on any new song you purchase. Anyway, That’s how it’s done with midi clips.

    Awesome video, but this leaves no room for spontaneous worship. I appreciate all your input and advice, but man did I cringe hard when you said that you tend to play every song as it was recorded....made my heart hurt. Sounds more like a production than leading a congregation into a time of worship and reflection. I can appreciate the work that goes into it, but this just sounds too much like playing for a concert/show, rather than a time of worship. Love you guys and your input, but it's hard to watch and listen to worship leaders talking only about "copying" the recorded version, rather than using a tool to help drive the worship into a deeper time of reflection. As worship leaders, the goal should be to help usher the congregation into a time of worship, rather than just singing a couple songs exactly how they are on the record. Maybe I'm misunderstanding your intent, but it just sounds a lot like a concert production rather that a time of worship. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

    Tracks are just too much of a headache and not practical imo. Every church I’ve played at they either don’t know how to use them, aren’t proficient in their instrument enough to use them, just wanna sound like the track on the radio, or a combination. And I’m not a hometown musician. A lot of churches struggle with this.
