Abide With Me Hymn - Gods Country

Музыка

Abide With Me is a well-known Christian hymn composed by Henry Francis Lyte in 1847, though the lyrics are usually sung to William Henry Monk's melody Eventide rather than Lyte's original music. It is popular across many denominations, and was said to be a favourite of King George V and Mahatma Gandhi. It was sung at both the wedding of King George VI and that of his daughter, who would go on to become Queen Elizabeth II. Since 1927 it has been sung before the kick-off at the FA Cup Final and Challenge Cup Final. It is also often sung at Christian funerals.
Lyte wrote the words to his poem while he lay dying from tuberculosis, and lived only three weeks after its completion.

I first heard this while turning pages for an organist at a rustic chapel. It moved me. Years later, I was near, trying to comfort a woman as doctors tried in vain to save her husband. It was a Sunday morning. As it happened, I passed the hospital chapel, a small stone church built right into the hospital. Full of grief, with no way to ease that widow's pain, I poured the groaning of the spirit into singing this, as a homecoming prayer for the husband and an offering for comfort to the wife. Years later, my own father died on a Sunday morning, before dawn. I too took comfort in this hymn, which I played again and again, when grief reappeared. When one day, the God who saved my life time and again, finally calls me away, I hope someone will sing this for my soul, and to comfort the dear ones left behind.

During WW2, my grandfather served in the Canadian forces. His buddy was wounded critically on the battlefield. My grandfather comforted him by singing this song to him as he laid there dying. My grandfather would weep when he'd hear this song. When I hear this song, I think of him. Thanks for the post.

Me and my family sung this song many times. It is one of the most beautiful hymn. I just had a massive heart attack and my LORD AND SAVIOUR JESUS CHRIST saved my life and gave me a new life to live. Now this hymn means so much more to me than it has ever been before. Knowing that I am safe in HIS precious arms. Things in life changes but HE changes not. He is still GOD on the throne. JESUS SAVES.

I feel a connection to this hymn, I am helpless without God. Today I sang this as it was rainy and gloomy, and I was feeling overwhelmed. By the time the hymn ended, the sun came out and I felt at peace. God is so gracious. May we not forget that our worries are not bigger than God.

Many Christian hymns are written from the heart at times of deep pain. This is one such hymn as this was written when Henry Francis Lyte was in his death bed due to tuberculosis (in 1847). He died three weeks later. But his emotions and relationship with God comes through in the lyrics

It was only via the desperate dying devout soul of an Anglican Scotsman in 1847 that Our Heavenly Father could have imparted the lyrics of this Hymnal Plea from His own heart to a dying world of sinners who would sing this hymn some weeping in grief and deep sorrow at almost every funeral service of departed Christians which reverberated into every corner of the earth and returned to The Father on His glorious Throne above the highest Heaven in Divine worship of His being.God draws near to those who are of a contrite heart and a broken spirit. He just wants to draw near to us to embrace us whom he formed uniquely in our mothers' wombs because He loves us enough to have offered His only begotten and beloved Son to redeem us prodigals back to Him who longs for our home-coming to Him Who desires not the death of a sinner but that ALL should come to repentance in Christ and be saved from eternal separation from The Father. Abide with me; fast falls the eventide; The darkness deepens; Lord, with me abide; When other helpers fail and comforts flee, Help of the helpless, oh, abide with me. Swift to its close ebbs out life’s little day; Earth’s joys grow dim, its glories pass away; Change and decay in all around I see- O Thou who changest not, abide with me. I need Thy presence every passing hour; What but Thy grace can foil the tempter’s pow’r? Who, like Thyself, my guide and stay can be? Through cloud and sunshine, Lord, abide with me. I fear no foe, with Thee at hand to bless; Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness; Where is death’s sting? Where, grave, thy victory? I triumph still, if Thou abide with me. Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes; Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies; Heav’n’s morning breaks, and earth’s vain shadows flee; In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me.

What a hymn that supplies comfort during our most fearful moment, especially, when overwhelmed by the aftermath of death. May the infinite God, Who encouraged HENRY F LYTE to compose this and other hymns of encouragement abide with us in our fearful moments.

This hymn is as timeless as God himself, it covers my waking up,my sleeping, and my death. This hymn takes me to a place only I can go to be with my God. Another hymn that does this, is Dear Lord and Father of mankind. This hymn speaks of my humanness,my weakness, and of my total dependency on God. To live for God is to die to self, this is a daily struggle for most Christians. It is in these times of worship that the Holy Spirit brings healing, and gives us the strength to carry on.

My dad told me he wanted this song at his service. I remembered this as I sat in the little room at the hospital when they told me he died. He was only 68 and I wasn't expecting it, yet when I look back I think God was preparing me because I would ask my dad questions and tell him things... like "what will happen with the house if one of you dies?" or "I want to make a video of you." He died before I made it.

This melody was written by William Monk in 1861 during a conference called by the Church of England for a committee to choose a melody for each hymn in the new hymnal. Different melodies for hymns were being used throughout England. I surmise that the committee did not like any melody used for this hymn so Mr. Monk wrote this fantastic one.

This is definitely one of the first hymns I turn to when I feel helpless. The words themselves mean a great deal, but if you are aware of the fact that Henry Francis Lyte was literally on his deathbed when writing this adds even more poignancy. Some 7 years ago when my Mum suggested this for my Gran's funeral I felt it was too close to the bone at that time. I have listened to it and sung it many times before and since, both when I am happy and sad. It never fails to make me cry and to give me fortitude. Otherwise I tend to focus on the Psalms, being a Scottish Presbyterian, but this hymn expresses something more fundamental about the human experience than event most of them.
