It's pretty hard to argue with James Cameron. This guy not only talks the talk, he has walked the walk. He knows what extremely deep undersea exploration in submersibles is all about. Stockton Rush should have paid attention to what James Cameron, Bob Ballard, and many other top experts in the submersible field had to say. Unfortunately Rush was a cowboy who thought he knew best. He paid the ultimate price, and sadly he took others with him.

Dr. Ballard made a excellent point. For reference, municipal water systems in the USA (and probably elsewhere) typically operate in the range of 40 psi* / 276 kPa to 70 psi / 483 kPa, although pressures can be lower or higher depending on circumstances, including the topography of the system (BTW, I am a civil engineer and a lot of my career has dealt with the design of pipelines, pumping stations, water wells, and storage tanks for municipal water systems). Even these pressure can be dangerous if uncontrolled. For example, 60 psi / 414 kPa on a 12" / 305 mm closed valve or blind flange (a type of pipe end) exerts a total force of almost 6,800 pounds / 30,200 N. This is more than three times the weight of my first car, a 1973 Mazda RX-2. Now, compare this to the pressure 12,500 feet down in the ocean: approximately 5,500 psi, which is about 100 times what your municipal water system operates out. It's also equivalent to one Chevy Tahoe for every square inch of surface. Pressure in municipal water systems are bad enough from a safety standpoint, but deep ocean pressures are two orders of magnitude more dangerous. * psi = pounds of force per square inch

We unfortunately lost one in the sub: P.H. Nargeolet was literally nicknamed "Mr. Titanic" in France as he knew everything about the ship and dived many times to explore her remains. Such an interesting man and a terrible loss. His daughter said he was probably happy where he was right now

it's well known that James Cameron is intense and passionate about every little detail being perfect. there's a reason why he can be demanding and exhausting to work with in Hollywood...but that's also why the man is insanely successful. He went from shooting Terminator 1 on a low budget with no permits, to overseeing the construction of his own submersible crafts the guy is a legend for sure. absolutely brilliant too

You can see a therapist for that. His comparison of this to Titanic is ridiculous. Titanic was a passenger liner who had a reason to be on the ocean that night. Every person on it was traveling somewhere. Some were moving to America to start a new life. Others were on honeymoons, business trips, and yes, a few just wanted to see it (not many, though, 6 days even on a nice ship in those times wasn't altogether pleasant). The people who went down to glare at a rotting corpse that people like Cameron have romanticized had no reason to be there. They were not just going about their lives when they plunged 2.5 miles down into the North Atlantic. If we really want to learn from history, let's learn to let the Titanic go. It has no purpose to humanity anymore. Romanticizing it for 111 years is why those people went down there. Cameron is the one that didn't learn from history. He's already romanticizing this and setting up parallels for another movie. You can almost see him salivating. This was just a greedy company who'd already been sued for fraud trying to sucker billionaires out of money. That's all it was. It wasn't for "science" or out of a love of deep sea exploration. It was a CEO con artist trying to get richer. And it killed himself and four other people.

And in 60 years no research sub has been lost and no one has died. There's a reason professionals may seem a bit obsessive or "focused on obscene levels of safety" to quote a recently deceased CEO that seemed to have the opinions about safety that he himself refuted pretty dramatically, of course with the added benefit of "manslaughtering" 4 others so the whole thing can't even be funny and has to be tragic and ruin families and take beloved members of society away. A really fked up part of me hopes the hull monitoring system alerted Stockton and obly Stockton to what was seconds from happening so he may have at least ended his existence with a brief moment of self reflection... Rumours about an emergency ascent having been started do seem to persist as unverified as they are.

Even with warnings that his sub was not likely going to be able to survive at those depths with repeated dives, he still did it anyway and took passengers in a submersible that had not been tested by a third party regulator. I think this tragedy is going to be a big example in business ethics courses along with Boeing’s 737 MAX program and the Challenger Disaster, that cutting corners and ignoring your own engineers will result in tragedy.

Most of these rich people ignore advise telling them reality and surround themselves with yes men. I could listen to Dr. Ballard talk for hours. His voice is so calm yet informative. He knows how to catch your attention and reel you in, yet make you listen.

There are likely not two more qualified people on the planet to comment on this tragedy, than these two gentlemen. Dr. Ballard deserves knighthood for his lifetime work in this particular field. Enjoyed seeing them here and it’s a bit comforting amidst the sorrow. Cheers.

Dr. Ballard is one of my heroes. I remember as a kid watching the program that showed them discovering the Titanic. I remember thinking he was the coolest most luckiest person on Earth.

yep but then without that pressure, they're as vulnerable as we are in the deep sea and die instantly. I remember reading that blob fish only look the way they do in photos because of the insane decrease in pressure when brought to the surface; I believe they are deep-sea dwellers.

they are exactly right... the only good thing to come of this.. is that it will lead to stricter guidance and regulations with regard to deep sea vessels. This was most likely avoidable

It's in international waters though. Who regulates that? Luckily this is a rich man's game so surely they will regulate themselves in the future and not tempt nonsense like that without much better equipment.

I really feel for the 19yo and all the families involved who were likely worried and had no say in whether their loved one took the plunge down to darkness. The old heads were experienced but there’s reports the young lad had mixed feelings. It’s one thing to feel comfortable and fully commit to something, but obviously a whole other when you’re inexperienced and unsure where anxiety thrives. I know they say the death was quick but you have to realize that they were already nearly 2 hours in and falling down about 10,000 feet before they lost contact (because of implosion) The Titan drops like a stone to the darkest depths with a single glowstick to illuminate the dark. Rest easy my friend. 🙏🏻

My heart breaks for the five people on this doomed submarine. May the deceased rest in Peace!! 😭 😭 😭

Well said James Cameron. It is basically a suicidal trip, because they are ignoring all the risks and mitigations people have learned to do over many years.

I'd had very similar thoughts along the same lines that Cameron spoke. It was a preventable disaster, brought on by arrogance and pride like the disaster of the Titanic itself. You have to mitigate the risk, and take nothing for granted. Sadly now we have two gravesites at the bottom of the Atlantic, face to face.

James is absolutely furious, as he certainly should be

The main lesson about this tragic event is Safety over Luxury... It will happen again if we never understood our history.. RIP to the 5 people onboard this tragic sub and the passengers of the infamous Unsinkable ship🙏

They went into adventure that takes a lifetime just what the crews & passengers experienced in the maiden voyage of the infamous ship which is ironically connected to the 5 people in the sub which James Cameron noticed. Both never conducted safety measures and both heeded the warnings of the people that are very crucial to prevent loss of lives and affects everyone. That is why we need to understand our History in order to prevent another such catastrophic tragedies

That was tense, but good on James for his bluntness. You can tell he was hurting though.

If I'm James Cameron I'm counting my lucky stars and never going down there again certified or not.

James is such a smart guy. Spot on in everything he said. As a human being, if you going on such an adventure, assess all the risks.

This awful tragedy sounds like it could have been prevented, and that is very disturbing. While this occurrence could lead to improvements as Bob Ballard was saying after Titanic went down, so often, with disasters, its after the horse has bolted. So sorry for the victims and their families. Maybe the Titanic should be left to RIP too.

More like an expert in not getting into a stupidly designed vehicle to visit a sunken ship.

I saw interviews where it was said that the passengers were really the crew because they would be trined and would take part in the operation of the sub and they would do research. I wonder if this was a way of skirting laws about vehicles that take passengrs,

The carbon fiber was a major cause of this accident. Carbon fiber isn't meant to be used the way they used it. It's great at flexing under pressure, but it's not meant to retain structural integrity under constant high pressure. It will rupture like a balloon. Carbon fiber is a flexible material, that is not a good material to be used if you want structural integrity.

I wish people would stop saying they have a problem with the design or the material used. There's nothing wrong with carbon fibre material. The issue is the pressure at 12,500 feet under the ocean. Carbon Fibre can and has made deep sea exploration feasible for the consumer and let's not forget that the Titan was also made with Titanium end caps and those were experiencing the same pressure the carbon fibre was.

I very much PRAY that they really did implode on the way down. It seems like the Coast Guard knew they had imploded a few days ago and its not the 1st time we've been lied too about a Sub. Thresher imploded yes, but almost a day after it sank. There were still guys on board banging on the hull and the USS Seawolf heard them do it over 3 dives. Sad stuff

Yesh they definitely knew earlier but it takes time to get the boats and equipment to the site, but i think the team who was there with the titan probably knew right when it happened that they were doomed

A lot of people are unaware that James Cameron has dived to Titanic more than 30 times. In addition to being considered an elite deep sea expert, he also advanced the technology in order to do so. He designed his own submersible that took him into the Mariana Trench in 2012 which made him the first person to do it solo (and only 1 of 3 to have ever done it up to that point). So, if it sounds like he knows what he's talking about in this interview, he does -- Furthermore, Cameron is friends with Robert Ballard, the oceanographer who discovered Titanic

I feel like you’ve recently obtained this information and trying to pass off like you have some prior knowledge of his experience. 🤷

My dad is a nasa engineer he hates carbon fiber for extreme stress loaded projects because of its tendency to delaminate , he also said even the titanium was a bad idea due to its shorter life under repeat stress because it doesn’t rebound like steel does or something to the extent he told me

That sub went down there many times before all it takes is one tiny micro pressure crack going unnoticed and bam rip to those souls, i think titanic should be left alone now as far as diving it, we have plenty of footage and many people have seen it, let her and her victims and these men rest 😢

Actually, implosion probably occurred 1 hour and 45 minutes into this tragedy.

I saw an experiment where they put a metal barrel underwater and it started to crumple within 4 meters. Now imagine the pressure the Titan went through, being that deep. It had to of been an instant death.

Exactly, Rush could have gotten it certified and then do upgrades. I understand being experimental, just not with other lives, paying passageners at that. They knew the risk but also had to be under the impression that it was relatively safe enough. Paying a quarter of a million dollars for a ride.

Hope post this incident people wont do such crazy thing, may the souls of the people involved in the incident rest in peace 🕊️

Everyone closely involved with the incident knew exactly what happened yet they played it off up until the moment they would have run out of oxygen. Stories like this bring in money so they had to keep it going as long as possible.

@@AmethystEyesExcept it’s now come out the Navy picked up the implosion on Sunday. If they haven’t known, they STRONGLY suspected what happened. There was a never a chance it wasn’t complete destruction, and given the outcome thank God for that. At least they never knew what hit them.

Perhaps instantaneous death is better than trying to conserve oxygen by lying perfectly still for hours, not speaking, as you slowly fade away long before rescue arrives.

It happed so fast, Stockton Rush didn't have time to be an idiot. He just ceased to be. Sadly he took 4 people with him.

Hopefully out of this incident we will see a greater rapid response in utilizing flight and drop zones versus nautical response which is much slower.

Agree, the main thing that needs to be taken seriously is how to improve safety, what mandatory regulations must be in place and how businesses allowed to take on passengers and what this all means in terms of safety first. technology will improve, more people will be able to afford in the future to go under the sea as guided tours, this needs to be addressed without a doubt.

in this same interview he stated that they had a strong feeling it was implosion since the beginning but held off saying anything until crews learned more just out of respect for the families.

Both guests have a brilliant way of making someone be at fault without calling them a monster, it’s a fine line to walk, of a brilliant man who’s life’s work will be reduced to this grave errors in judgement.

It still would be really cool to go see the Titanic.
