ABC - John Daly and the News | Full Broadcast (December 1, 1953)

'John Daly and the News' is unique because of its distinct editorial viewpoint. In place of the usual bits and pieces of unassayed news and news film, Daly places the major stories in perspective."--1953 Peabody Digest.
This episode's headlines include: Senator Joseph McCarthy holds a press conference on MIAs in Korea; Secretary of State John Foster Dulles responds to Senator McCarthy's attack on U.S. foreign policy regarding its allies; Soviet Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Vishinsky alleges American war crimes in Korea; Defense Secretary Charles E. Wilson proposes military cuts; the first telephone cable system for transatlantic calls is announced; newspaper and longshoremen strikes cause work stoppages in New York; ABC receives an award for its television coverage of the Coronation; and a Christmas tree is brought to the Rockefeller Center.

John Daly paved the way for John Cameron Swayze, Ron Cochran, Peter Jennings x2, Frank Reynolds x2, Harry Reasoner, Charles Gibson, Diane Sawyer, and now David Muir

John Cameron Swayze was the news anchor at NBC News from 1948 to 1956, and also did some news anchor work for NBC Radio. Swayze went to ABC News in 1962 as part of a 3-news anchor team for about a year. They were all replaced by Ron Cochran, who was the news anchor of record during coverage of President Kennedy’s assassination in 1963.

This is among the few John Daly kinescopes that are known to have survived. They were archived in the University of Georgia as these episodes were entries for the Peabody Award back since its original airing . There is supposedly one more besides those I posted, but according to its notes, it has been lost since the 1990s. I appreciate your comment. These are all I have.

I’ve often wondered why or how it came to be that John Daly didn’t continue his career in news at CBS? He is in the history of audio recordings for his announcements of both the Pearl Harbor attack and the death of FDR for CBS Radio. I’ve never been able to dig up any reason why he left CBS in the 1940’s and joined ABC in 1953. Many broadcasting ‘nerds’ know quite well that at that time, ABC was a very weak network, always coming in a distant third in ratings, having fewer affiliates, etc…. I would not have expected anyone with a distinguished background would be willing to work for the network. For the years he hosted What’s My Line on CBS, he was a Goodson-Todman employee, so that is the only possible reason I can think of why CBS News would not hire him as he was in entertainment.

It's very ironic to hear Dulles talking about respecting other nation’s sovereign territory when he was at the forefront of the overthrowing of multiple government during the 1950s (2:20)
