    If you look at what was going on in the world during this time (the first half or so of the 20th century), you would see that events were quite chaotic & not as picturesque as displayed here. People were afraid of being bombed, being dragged into another war, economic collapse, the Dust Bowl, racial violence was widespread, the Civil Rights movement was taking hold for Black Americans on the east coast and for Latinos (specifically Chicanos) and Asians on the west coast, serial killers were getting more media coverage, plus assassination attempts, rioting, etc. TV shows & movies provided a welcome escape from reality & showed the world as people would've liked it to be. I do think that there are some aspects of society that are different - e.g. people were probably more polite out in public, but that was generally to those within their specific group (racial/ethnic and socioeconomic).

    I'm pretty young so I don't know much about it myself, but my Grandpa said that times were a lot simpler and nicer back then. Like Kimberlee said, at this time(Which was in the 40s I believe)things were pretty chaotic with world war 2 and such...however in the 50's 60's and 70's things were FAR better(Or so Grandpa says). Sometimes he still talks about wishing to go back to those times.

The only reason we think the world is so awful today is because we're _aware_ of what's happening everywhere. The world wasnt as connected, but it hasn't gotten worse...arguably its gotten better.

  • @bjbell52

    @bjbell52

    9 жыл бұрын

    Yes it's true. As Kathalyr pointed out, today if controlled by medication one can get a drivers license. However, if a person has a seizure while driving they can take away that license. I worked at Abbott Labs, ironically in the department that was bringing an epilepsy drug to market. One of my co-workers had epilepsy and had a brief seizure while driving. Luckily for him, it was just as he was coming to a halt at a toll booth. It lasted only long enough for him to nudge the lady in front of him. They took his license away for 1 year PLUS he had to be seizure free that entire year. Back in Abbott's day they didn't have the meds. If he started to have a seizure while on stage Lou would punch him in the stomach and that would bring him out of it. According to the book by Lou's daughter (Lou's on First), this is why Abbott had a hard time keeping a partner. BTW, that lady sued him. She was offered $25000 to settle but she turned it down thinking the courts would give her more. At the trail the lawyer for my friend discovered and brought out the fact that she had to go to 6 different doctors before finding one who would back up her claim about her having whiplash. She LOST the case and didn't get a dime!

This is in addition to becoming much more fuel efficient and coming with lots of extra amenities. Besides that, property and casualty insurance is a great way to lose money. There's a reason most of those insurance companies are adding loans to their business, it's because they need a way to actually make money instead of paying out 1.2 dollars for every dollar they get in premiums.

    America was a very different place then. Granted, I was a kid, all young and unaware, but they've taken Main Street of my Hometown and turned it into a miracle mile, replete with slick pushers, barking hucksters and all manner of half-dressed underaged shills. Sure, I miss my youth, but I miss America even more. Maybe that's where the timeless humor of Abbot & Costello transports us to - not to a place, but to a time. Hey ... Do you remember The Life of Riley? or The Honeymooners? Every week hundreds of thousands of people would tune in to watch a show about the lives of a bus driver, a sewer worker and their wives. What a different town America was then, eh? I'm not saying that all of the changes have been bad. We surely needed some of them, I think. But I fear we've thrown the baby out with the bath-water in many ways. ... Well, here's to us and those like us. May we all meet up on the other side.

    I was in Paris a few years ago and staying in an apartment on one of the side streets. I watched quite a few people there "parking by feel". They would squeeze into spots that no one in the US would even *try* to squeeze into, but to do it, they had to bump the car in front of and behind them -- sometimes even moving the other car in the process. Parking really sucked over there... If you visit and are renting a car and the rental car wants to give you a "free upgrade" to an SUV, avoid it unless you just absolutely need the extra space for luggage / passengers. Their SUVs are not as large as the SUVs we have in the US, but they still limit where you can park since most of the cars there are fairly small, thus when a parking spot does open up, it's the size that the old style Minis or Fiat 500s could fit into.

    Lou Costello was a great comedian. He was also a very decent man. In 1943, his one year old son drowned in the family pool. He got out of his playpen, and his nurse didn’t see it, he crawled to the pool and drowned. Costello was about to enter the stage for a performance when he got the news. He went on with the show, funny as ever. The audience knew nothing. When the show ended he went to be with his wife who was grieving and sedated. He later told reporters, the people paid their hard earned money to see them, he couldn’t disappoint them. He never got over his sons death. Friends say he changed somewhat. I can understand that.

    The fact that we can still relate to this testify one thing: Society changed a lot from end of XIX century into beginning of XX century with industrial revolution and goodies like cars for all. But it changed very little for the past 100 years. We kept always the same capitalistic and industrial paradigm.
