For some unique and utterly brilliant reason, this was the song that affected me quite deeply at first listen. By the end of the song, on that quiet midnight hour of Voyage’s release, I was all cried out, so overcome with emotion in a way that songs like “I Wonder” or “Like An Angel Passing Through My Room” had done in the past. Funnily enough, both those songs feature our lovely Frida on lead…and this is where we need to talk about her importance in ABBA’s sound. Agnetha has always been regarded as a master storyteller through her performances on “S.O.S.” and “The Winner Takes it All,” just to name a couple, but Anni-Frid is not even close to being far behind. She takes you there with her through every scene, every line delivered is a setting that’s laid and evolved. You can feel it in “Fernando,” “When All Is Said and Done,” “Cassandra,” “Should I Laugh or Cry,” and just about every song she has recorded as part of ABBA and as a solo artist. “Bumblebee” is a warm and gentle but quite effective example, as she moves ever so softly through it, pretty much like an actual bumblebee. Her personal sentiments around environmental issues are splattered all over the song, a great opportunity to not only display vocal prowess but also strong personal conviction. You know she means it when she sings it. She believes it, and therefore, you do too. You realize that the “little things” are part of everything, and that if we lose sight of them, the entirety of it all is gone. If we’re not careful, it will be gone for good. (I’m always mystified about how her voice almost breaks when she sings that last “feeling sad for those who never.” Rather than spotting a vocal difficulty, I see it as that’s her, in tune with the sadness and the melancholy of what’s being said in the lyrics). I have to note that the “marriage” of her vocals and Benny’s 80s synths is one of the many things that bring a special warmth to my heart. As with many of the songs I mentioned, they go hand in hand. Ice and honey melted together, if there were such a thing. Thanks for all the introspection and amazing content you’re delivering, BB! As always, your insights are making us think and feel about ABBA in a deeper way. Deeper than before, I must say!

Frida puts so much love, heart, soul and devotion into her singing, she takes you somewhere else, as you all have singled out so perfectly here. LOVED reading your thoughts, Diego, and especially the fantastic observation of the combination of Frida's warm vocals and Benny's synthesizer sounds, like "ice and honey melted together". Perfect!!

ABBA have chosen the perfect singular example of the danger of environmental change ,the humble busy bumblebee ,not only making honey for us to enjoy but also cross pollinating our flowers and extremely important and necessary for our food, our fruit and vegetables. This little miracle of nature is key to our survival, and Annifrid with her beautiful soft and hypnotic vocals gently takes us into the garden to contemplate and reflect on something so beautiful and fragile and bring us into reality and address a problem in our midst. Yes the music is subdued and the instruments minimal ,but Annifrids words and song are in unison they are pure perfection that makes me,at least ,feel she is near to me ,so close ,that I can almost feel her breath on my face .This is so beautiful and so Annifrid and so so ABBA .Thankyou Bobby's Brother you are on target as always and Sam really adds a beautiful dimension to the review, and so our VOYAGE continues.

@@chinarose1358 I apologise for my incorrect knowledge of the bumblee, I assumed it was another name for the honey Bee, I looked it up and i was wrong. Here in Australia we don't have the bumble Bee only the European honey Bee and our own Australian native Bees. Our native Bees are interesting, they have no sting and make hives in hollow tree trunks the Australian Aboriginals called honey SUGAR BAG,they would simply reach into the hives and scoop out the honey the native Bee has no sting and don't defend the hive or its honey so they don't have to worry about being stung.😀🐝

As a person in my senior years, the lyrics that affected me most emotionally are "I imagine my distress. It would be a new kind of loneliness". I know what loss feels like and I really don't want to imagine what the world would be like without bumblebees. This is the one song on the album that I immediately thought about how I could sing it for others...which I will do - no doubt about it!

(BB, we've missed you too!) Bumblebee is the perfect vehicle for Frida, and only she could pull off such a simple song and make it memorable. It could of very well been a one-off charity single for Frida's environmental causes. I see the comparison to Enya, Bumblebee has a new age/Celtic sort of vibe. While it has a serious message, like other ABBA songs you get lost in it's beautiful melody.

I feel compelled to add several more comments about this song. First, it’s my second favorite song on the album (after “When You Danced…”), and I was totally expecting to hate it when I first saw the track list. The title seemed so corny, and I thought the final product would be just as corny. However, I ended up loving Björn’s lyrics (even “tiny fuzzy ball” - who writes lyrics like this these days? So cute! I can’t stop thinking about this description each time I see a bumblebee now!), Frida’s wonderful vocal, and the flute melody is just so haunting. So, even though other songs are more artful or intricate in their construction, the mood combined with the directness of the dual message (as BB astutely points out here) ultimately make this corny track a complete winner for me.

I especially love echo effects in the chorus and when Agnetha joins in. It might take a few listens before you fall in love with this song forever. And it makes you wanna say that it's one of the best on the album, but the problem with Voyage is that practically every song looks this way, so strong they are...

Well, even some abba fans were disappointed in this song, but it is certainly one of the high potentials in this album. The depth of this is not that obvious and conspicuous, it requires listening more closely to this. Many people see some similarities to "Fernando", but the melody is drastically different (for me, of course). And I heard some vibe of Benny's "Klinga mina klockor", not namely stylistically, rather the entire atmosphere of the music. Plus it is important to mention Frida's environmental movement support, so no wonder that she stood as a lead vocalist of this track because she was able to express this all depth through her voice. Brilliant! Just brilliant! I think it is one of best ones in this album!

Bumblebee may be my favourite song off Voyage. At least in my top 3. My mother is old and during the summer, gets a lot of pleasure seeing the bumblebees on her lavender plants in her garden. It makes me think of an old person getting pleasure out of the simple things in life, such as Bumblebees and sitting watching clouds pass by, when all the frantic rushing around of youth is over. It also reminds me that the members of ABBA are likewise quite old now.

I love the song and is still one of my favourites on the album. My only real issue with the album with me, is there isn't quite enough of the 'full abba sound' with both girls in harmony - this to me is the abba trademark that a lot of fans will feel is missing to a degree on Voyage. Still, it's a very accomplished and interesting album that innovates in so many areas for them as a group, and it was very brave of them to try these new genres at this stage in their careers. I'm hoping there is another album after such success with this, and that that has more of the dual female leads that we love so much (they clearly have the voices)!

The one word that comes to my mind and heart everytime I listen to this song is: PEACE, which we need so much of right now! I totally agree that Frida's voice sounds like being drenched in warm honey, you can really hear that she "sings this song with her heart", as she said in the BBC interview. I always like to say that her voice has a velvet sound to it, which is showcased beautifully in this song! The slightly lower register even adds to this. I also agree that "From thyme to bluebell" really does sound like Enya, when Agnetha's high harmony comes in, I get shivers and tear up! I have to say that "Bumblebee" had to grow on me a little bit at first, because it was musically unexpected for me on the album, but now, I love it for its simplicity and beauty and of course, for Björn's masterful lyrics, making the bigger picture of climate change in the whole world so personal and intimate! Hey Hey Bobby.. Our world is ever changing. The term “Stop and smell the flowers “ is a mantra that has been largely ignored. Frida sings about a lowly bumblebee but without him the world would be a less colorful place and less flowers to stop and smell. At first herd, I thought how sweet, but deeper meaning, and environmental issues shine through. In our fast passed lives and obligations we don’t oft see what is before us. Shades of Fernando come through to paint yet another picture and a story. The music is soothing and peaceful with undertones of the classical and yet unmistakably ABBA . I’ve said for years Benny and Bjorn are creative geniuses , Frida and Agnetha voices that are still crisp and clear and at times haunting. As always you breakdown and put together and make us think out of the box on all of the new songs. It has been most enjoyable and enlightening and I hope you’ll find more of ABBA to share with us. I love this song. Has anyone else noticed the similarity of the melody in the opening line to the beginning of 'Just Like That' - or is it just me? Frida's vocals are superb and so well supported by Agnetha. I found the instrumentation slightly drowned out their vocals and came across a stripped back vocal only version which is quite, quite beautiful. Many of the songs on Voyage remind us of other songs from ABBA's rich history. Benny and Bjorn worked with Anne Sofie Von Otter on her 2006 album 'I Let The Music Speak' - check out the track 'Butterfly Wings' - it's in a similar vein to 'Bumblebees' preceding it by 15 years - would love to hear Frida and Agnetha on this; one of those many 'should have been an ABBA song'.

Talk about pressure, Black Rose, haha. "Ode to Freedom" leaves me in absolute awe every single time, takes me somewhere else, if the rest of the album hadn't already. What a finale. Love your thoughts, Bobby Younger. There are many atmospheric moments throughout "Voyage", and these two songs are certainly the pinnacle. I'm so glad they've done this atmospheric style to this extent!

Frida truly in her garden, as well as the group sitting in nature! It is also fun, getting exposure to your knowledge of classical music! That is also impressive! I hope, one day, Benny and Bjorn invite you over for a wonderful conversation about, life, music, and just getting acquainted! I know they too, would appreciate your presentations! Thank you, as always!

My favourite on the album. Speaks to me on so many levels. Musically it has echoes of Fernando and The Piper, the lyrics are simple but it's so beautiful. A friend relates to this song and imagines it to be about her autistic son, struggling to adapt to the neurotypical world, his clumsiness/poor motor skills, passing from one changing interest/obsession to another, hoping that one day he will be understood and sad that she won't be around forever but she wonders how he will survive and is just enjoying her time with him now. Another interpretation I think of which kind of fits is that the song is about the Earth itself, a tiny vulnerable fuzzy ball and how it can exist in the vastness of space, seeing it rotate from a distance. The garden is the environment which is still beautiful but for how much longer

Very often, songs that sound so simple can go unnoticed alongside the more obvious hits but listen to it a few times and Bumblebee reveals its beauty and ultimately touches you more deeply. Benny & Bjorn have done this with so many songs! As well as Fernando, the flute/pipes remind me of Move On - another song that has a profound message wrapped up in a deceptively simple melody.
