Abba are the best period.the tapestry of their songs can't be beat. They were strictly top 40 pop flavor of the week. I just heard this song for the first time in almost 40 years.....it is incredible. It's funny how time changes your perspective. What would life have been like without ABBA! Happy 50th! 🎉6/4/74 - 6/4/24. Go to ABBA Voyage concert as soon as you can! I remember vividly watching the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest as a 6 year old and watching ABBA performing “Waterloo”, and being mesmerised. I’ve been a fan ever since, even being bullied for it, especially when entering secondary school in 1978. ABBA have a combined wealth of nearly £1.5billion. Oddly enough, 6 April 1974 to 6 April 2024 is 1,577,912,463 seconds. So ABBA have earned £1 per second over the last 50 years! Thank you Anni-Frid, Bjorn, Benny, Agnetha.

This song is quite simply the best pop song that has ever been written. When you consider the lyrics are written by a man whose native language is not English, yet they touch every one of us who has lost in love. Musically the concept of the song is quite simple in its structure but the melody, the harmonies and the arrangement in the verse that starts “but tell me does she kiss”....is breathtaking. Agnetha’s lead vocal is so emotional, so honest and so stunning. Sung faultlessly to such a high standard that we are highly unlikely to ever witness again.

Abba really were a joint enterprise. In 1970/71, the two ladies were actually backing singers for Benny and Björn! They had not found their groove, their voice in their first year together. But they were patient. The average age of the group was near 30 by the time Abba had achieved a path to international success, in a language that was not their mother tongue. Frida and Agnetha were very nuanced, expressionist singers (in English!): not just about having a fabulous basic sound. I don't think Benny and Björn would have achieved the same success as song-writers, or have been as inspired, had they somehow hooked up with two lady singers other than the amazing Frida and Agnetha - so joint enterprise!

In the context of her painful divorce from Bjorn, how could they have asked her to sing those lyrics? But the pain in her voice is what makes this a masterpiece, despite the simplicity of the beautiful classical melody. Benny's piano is breathtaking and that line 'But you see...' Anyone familiar with Connie's songs and career knows Agnetha couldn't have asked for a better "teacher" or role model when it comes to infusing pure emotion in a love / heartbreak song.

If they sneer, you sneer back. Don't be afraid. After all, you are cool. Like the Fonz, eh? Don't take offence. Bless you, ABBA, and thank you for the gift of your music, beauty and love. Lee Lovett

What's extremely depressing to me about this song is the message is that we're not in control of our own fate or destiny, it's all luck. The metaphor of the gods sitting around a table playing games with your life is eerie. Even if everything is going well in your life, all it takes is for them to lose the game for you to lose something near to you, no matter how big or small. You are nothing more than a spectator of their games, reaping the winnings or losses.

I think you might have misunderstood the lyrics. What the true meaning is about someone realizing how their life, as they knew it, has been shattered to pieces. But, mostly that because you trust in the other, the other can abuse that trust. So, the feeling of the "gods" (actually, a reference to Greek mythology) is quite understandable, because Greek gods were sometimes quite cruel to humans. You get the clue that infidelity was the cause of the breakup in the line "Tell me, does she kiss the way I used to kiss you. Does it feel the same, when she calls your name". Anyone who has been cheated on knows what that is all about. This song is about a woman who feels out of control because her husband already has his future, while she has nothing. She didn't even know anything was wrong, which makes her feel small. She feels her life is now out of her hands. I hope that helps you understand it better. This is a great song.

John Brian Catedrilla Actually early forms of pitch correction existed in the 70s. But either way, the fact that a lot of people use pitch correction today doesn't necessarily mean they're not talented. It's more to do with cutting costs. No musician is perfect, and before you could use software to just notch a slightly off note up or down a couple of cents, you had to basically re-record a whole take. Recording new takes is time-consuming, and time is what costs money in a recording studio. Recording music is a long and painstaking process, and being able to circumvent spending loads more time and money is a godsend. Assuming they didn't nail this song in one take, they would probably have been quite happy to be able to use a program that would obviate the need for them to spend loads more money re-recording constantly. Will some people use pitch correction to cover the fact that they're not a great singer? Well, probably, yeah. But that assumption shouldn't be applied to swathes of vocalists (and other musicians) just because they live in a time when software is freely available that makes the recording process a lot more efficient.

now rapping itself surely doesn't require the amount of talent as singing without autotune, still that comment is really ignorant. Rap is to be taken as seriously as singing, there are some songs that have touching and heartbreaking lyrics, some are just very superficial and bleak. Just as in pop music and singing. They have a different appeal.

"Dear Jimmy, I have left many things unsaid in our relationship through the years. Rather than allow these unspoken thoughts to die with me, I’ve chosen to record them here for you. I hope you will take my words in the spirit in which they are intended. I remember quite clearly the day you came home from the hospital. You can’t imagine the joy on mom’s face. I can honestly say I never saw her happier than she was on that day. You brought a shine to our life that nothing else ever did and I’m glad of that. We have not always seen eye to eye. I expect that will continue to be so in the future, however, nothing will ever change the fact that we are brothers - flesh and blood. And though we are very different people, I want you to know how much I respect what you have made of yourself in these last few years. You have taken the opportunity I gave you in the mailroom and you have run with it, becoming a valued member of the HHM family. For all the problems in your past, I’m proud we share the name McGill. I sincerely admire your energy and resilience. I used to worry about you finding a place in the world, but I’m not worried about that anymore. I’m certain now that no matter what the future may bring, you’ll land on your feet and I hope when you read this, you remember me not only as your brother, but as a person you knew was always in your corner."

(Why complain?) But tell me, does she kiss Like I used to kiss you? Does it feel the same When she calls your name? Somewhere deep inside You must know I miss you But what can I say? Rules must be obeyed The judges will decide (will decide) The likes of me abide (me abide) Spectators of the show (of the show) Always staying low (staying low) The game is on again (on again) A lover or a friend (or a friend) A big thing or a small (big or small) The winner takes it all (takes it all) I don't wanna talk If it makes you feel sad And I understand You've come to shake my hand I apologize If it makes you feel bad Seeing me so tense No self-confidence But you see The winner takes it all The winner takes it all So the winner takes it all And the loser has to fall Throw the dice, cold as ice Way down here, someone dear Takes it all, has to fall And it's plain, why complain?

Many people /bands have tried to copy it. Agnetha was a very popular singer already in Sweden in the late 1960’s before joining ABBA. They didn’t have autotune yet….

Even though the lyrics make me sad, they are also logical and kind of relieving. Btw i not over her and i'll never be, since she was my soulmate. I moved on of course, but she was the one. Not only men have feelings, they're are even more sensitive than women. Women cry their eyes out after a break up for maybe 3 days (maximum), afterwards they're pushing the restart button and go on with a smile. Men are looking cool on the surface even though heartbreak eats their soul.

After a visit to the ABBA museum in Stockholm I told my wife about the royalty rules and how the writer/composer got everything we were a little concerned about the two female singers. Well have no fear, it do not understand their riches but one of them were at the top 300 Switzerland fortune list. Also Godspeed to their avatar project. I do not watch movies due to their political content but if I would find myself in London it could happen that I tried to get one of their shows.

Its only when you reach a certain age is when the sheer depth of this song becomes apparent. The pain etched on the face of Agnetha breaks your heart. Beautifully performed and beautifully written. Words cannot describe the absolute majesty of this work of art.

Yes, I agree! I heard this song years ago when it was a hit and many times since- but only now, in my 62nd year did it truly get inside of me. I have listened to it 10 or 20 times in a row, gobsmacked by the depth and beauty of it each time.

Absolutely the GREATEST of the Great Songs of ABBA. Perfect Bjorn's lyrics to Benny's music and sung perfectly by AGNETHA.

@@melbro62 No!When they sing together,it is Abba. The best part of this song is when Frida starts singing with Anna. And it is same for Frida. When Anna starts singing with Frida,it is the best sound ever.So without one, they are not Abba
