Ooohhhh! Oohhh, the ... melody, the ... ahh, the ... the harmony, James! Oh yes! The music, James! Aahhhh! Thank you Mr Bond! What a performance! I cannot find all the words! "Well, my dear, I shall get you a dictionary so you can keep on improving your English vocabulary." (To paraphrase the opening scene to The Spy Who Loved Me.) That's what was great about the 70s: Pop was fun. Bond was fun, not a robot. Nothing too forlorn or God-forsaken.

Hygur: as for Bond movies back then, in both the 60s and 70s, Bond oozed charm and had a sense of humour. People got their money's worth going to the cinema: they were entertained. The Bond movies in those days were all tongue-in-cheek. Even the Cold War had fun poked at it.
It's 2024 now and I still think ABBA is one of the best pop groups ever.

Should be many more, this is an incredible song of theirs. If I had to choose just one to listen to, it would be this.
I saw them live in Boston in 1979. Their flight was delayed and the concert started late. As they went on stage, they apologized even though it wasn’t their fault. They said “we’re going to make it up to you!” And boy did they ever! Best concert I ever saw!!

Even more amazing. Their little private jet had to contend with one of the most damaging tornadoes to hit New England in modern times. The 'Windsor Locks Tornado' cost three lives and decimated a section of Bradley Airport. ABBA had to divert to Manchester. Conn. The stress of that flight caused Agnetha to become ill and the Washington concert the following day had to be cancelled.

The Beatles leaving everyone trailing in the dust when it comes to record sales, and that included Abba, Michael Jackson, Rolling Stones, you name it. The only one who is relatively close (due 45s sales) is Elvis Presley.

S.O.S The love you gave me, nothing else can save me, S.O.S When you're gone, how can I even try to go on? When you're gone, though I try, how can I carry on? [Verse 2] You seem so far away though you are standing near You made me feel alive, but something died I fear I really tried to make it out, I wish I understood What happened to our love? It used to be so good [Chorus] So, when you're near me, darling, can't you hear me? S.O.S The love you gave me, nothing else can save me, S.O.S When you're gone, how can I even try to go on? The slight imperfections, the naivety in the English lyrics + the accents just add to the genuine melancholy. This is a pop masterpiece - perfect arrangement, perfect performance. Stunning.

It has two different choruses, one after the other?
@Dustshoe

Do you think that the accented singing adds a little more poignancy to the English lyrics because of the potential emotional sensitivity of anyone in an unfamiliar environment (and who thereby must have an accent) who also suffers a relationship break-down there? And who is thus cast even more adrift? (Who would likelier be without the same levels of support that someone without an accent would have). And what imperfections in the grammar or style of the lyrics do you detect? I do not see any. If you compare how letters and postcards were written in the mid-70s to those of today (if people still write letters and postcards!), then you would see a lazier attempt at writing generally today that's clumsy with wording. The net effect of that is a tendency towards insincerity and aloofness, because we are all told to rush around like headless chickens today - and letter-writing is a chore. Unlike yesterday. The art of song-writing has already died though. (In S.O.S., the protagonist singer, as I understand, is still on the periphery of her former boyfriend's life - down, but not out!)
@Dustshoe
8 жыл бұрын
In S.O.S., the protagonist singer is still on the periphery of her former boyfriend's life. She's down, but not out. That is what the lyrics convey to me. And no break-up of a strong relationship was ever a fait accompli - that's the message of this cleverly written and well-meaning song.
@MrBlueSkyMrNight
8 жыл бұрын
It's a pop song - but one of great depth. A song that most everyone can relate to / can connect strongly to - and yet would fear to hear (on a personal level). Hope and despair (the emotional plea for love to wake up again). Amazingly bitter and sweet with respect to lyrics and music. Powerful combinations.

It's 2024 right now and I'm still digging it. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME
No band or artist wrote with so much depth and meaning about relationships/love.
Goddamnit, the synth in the bridge before the chorus.... that is some killer shit even for toady. It just rolls in so effortlessly and it instantly lets you know that something badass is gonna happen.
I dont think alot of people realize what talented musicians these people are. The complicated arrangements and vocals are quite impressive....

Benny and Björn are the best writers and componist ever. Frida and Agnetha have the best voices ever, they never needed special effects or anything, ABBA is the great group ever. No one, really no one, could ever mess with them.

Abba is best singer for aĺl the times
To this day, the song remains a firm fan favourite and a really great track to perform live due to the vocal dynamics and variation, from the sadness in Agnetha’s voice at the start, to the mesmerising harmonies of the band in the chorus and refrain; it’s just one of those songs that you can start at any point and instantly find a catchy hook.
Abba is forever no matter what year.

The memories this brings back is timeless in itself. My momma had all of the “albums” in the mid ‘70’s and played them religiously. She passed away September 16, 2022 and now it means so much more to me. I can’t help but cry when ever I hear ABBA, but smile at the same time. ABBA-THANK YOU for the music that is timeless. It’ll always have a place in my heart.

These guys have so many top tier songs. Can you all believe I didn't really know much at all about Abba until a couple weeks ago? I get a taxi every morning to town and it's about a 15-20 minute ride each way. It's always the same driver and he's got a playlist he always has playing and it's got some abba songs on it. I kept noticing that I'd always get one of their songs stuck in my head so I decided to look them up here and found a bunch more of their songs. I'm starting to get hooked and I'm beginning to bond with their music. They just make some top notch music that transcends genre bias. For instance, I'm big into rock and even heavy metal, but Abba is just so good at song writing that it doesn't matter to me that they're a pop band which isn't my normal genre. It's just that good. I'm glad my driver had a few Abba songs on the radio or else I never would have discovered alot of this stuff.
Yes, I do agree.
ABBA is absolutely one of the very greatest pop bands of all time.

Jamilya: I'm not charging a fee for my good advice. But remember: Abba strived to come up with fluent and eloquent lyrics when in Stockholm, in the 70s, they may have not known anybody whose first language was English who lived close by (if looking for advice). There is nothing shameful about pointing out deficiencies in somebody's grammar.
