@@mariaafunugo2340 they were popular but not really critically exhalted compared to some of the other bands of their era. Can’t really argue with that but I love the nostalgia. They were bigger in other parts of the world than they were in the US which says something about how huge they were worldwide. Muriel’s Wedding made me really love them more than when I was growing up with them.

It’s about two old soldiers talking about the Texican’s War of Independence against Mexico. (Yes, that’s what they called themselves ... Texicans.). Fernando definitely made it ... the line that mentions that the singer hasn’t seen a rifle in Fernando’s hands in so many years. It’s about people who would fight again for their liberty no matter how afraid or outmatched they were.

@@danbike9 So I'm wrong about the battle, but right about the rest of it? Thanks. Almost read it as Bjork, and went WTF?? However, it doesn't make sense that they would be having battles across the Rio Grande during the Mexican Revolution. The only reason I know this is that, aside from the bandits who murdered a lot of anglos (including my relatives living North of the river), most of the action took place during the Mexican-American War. So, please explain further. Again, thanks.

I love your reaction! 💕 Fernando is a fictional soldier from the 1830s Texas Revolution (fighting for independence from Mexico) and the song is written from the point of view of a fellow soldier who survived the war. Pretty interesting subject matter choice for Swedish musicians in the 1970s!

@@memphistim2001 That's the way I see it too. I think the songwriter suggested that it was about the Spanish-American War, but what he describes sounds more like the Mexican Revolution. Maybe he just got his history a little mixed up. And yes, Villa led the army of the north, Zapata the army of the south of Mexico. The Villistas made at least two raids into the US, one in New Mexico at the town of Columbus, and another into Texas, where they "crossed the Rio Grande." I have visited Columbus, where there is a Pancho Villa Museum. I walked across the border to Palomas, Chihuahua for lunch. It's an interesting area. I just discovered a prayer to Villa, for courage in the face of adversity. It ends with "Pancho Villa pray for me." I'm told that it often appears on postcards with a photo of Villa, but I can't find one, wish I could.

From an interview, given by Paul Weller (The Jam), his favourite album was Arrival. Wether he said it in jest or not, the fact that artists of all genres respect what ABBA have done, is a true testament of their ability. My own personal favourites by ABBA are My Love My Life and The Winner Takes it All. Can’t go without mentioning Angeleyes too. I remember, and hearing this I'm always reminded when this song hit the charts 45 years ago: co-worker of mine travelled with his family in a station wagon, we're told by the survivors that he was asleep at the time of the car wreck: his name was Fernando, always smiling, a hard worker, and then he was gone: 14 years old he was, and I remember him now like yesterday ...... I knew clicking on this reaction, I'd have those memories roll back in: he's not forgotten and while it reminds me of the loss, the pain, I'm reminded of his smiles and his constant joking at work, I cherish music, it always brings it back: thanks JoVaughn!

I know you like to hear how these bands were looked at "back in their day". I am old, LOL I was there. In the US there were a ton of people who dissed ABBA, called them commercial pop, etc. A lot of those people, if you looked in the back of their stereo cabinet, hidden away, you'd find an ABBA album. maybe two..lots of closet fans. Lots. They still hold a lot of records for sales. You are right, their arrangements, the vocal work...always sharp, always on point. It didn't hurt that a lot of young guys back then had secret crushes on Agnetha Faltskog, aka the blond...myself included. Good memories, it will take you a long time to work through their stuff, Jayvee. It is pretty much all good.

Just to let you know, the name of the group is not Abba. It's ABBA, all capitol letters. It's an acronym of the first letters of each of their names: Agnetha, Benny, Bjorn and Anni-frid (AKA Frida). An interesting fact about this song is it was written about two old veterans of the Texas-Mexico War (the Alamo war) getting together and reminiscing about their time in battle, not about someone who had died. That always fascinated me because I grew up in that area, just about five miles from the Alamo, yet a band from Sweden made a song about it! I guess that's why I always liked this song so much.

Curiously enough, Fernando was originally performed and recorded by the lady who sang lead vocals in this version you saw here but as a solo artist and in Swedish, not in English. Her name is Anni-Frid Lyngstad, better known as Frida, btw. Also, the lyrical content is different from the ABBA version in English. The Swedish version presents someone cheering up a friend who is reminiscing about a lost love while the English version presents Fernando, who is someone who fought during the Mexican-American war and he is reminiscing about those days when he was a freedom frighter. BTW, he did not die. He did live long enough to grow old and gray. Also, if you loved Frida's voice, you should react to other ABBA songs where she sings lead vocals such as When All Is Said and Done, One Man One Woman, Andante Andante, Money Money Money, Should I Laugh or Cry, Our Last Summer, I Wonder (Departure), I Have a Dream, just to name a few. She has recorded a few solo albums and she has an interesting discography. It is musically diverse. You should also check out her solo discography.

Taken from "@hectorsandoval4041 8 years ago" This song talks about a war between Mexico and USA. The battle was called "Batalla de la Angostura" on 1847. The troops used to play trumpets and drums when they were going to fight, Fernando is a name in Spanish, It means the song talks about 2 Mexican soldiers that had to cross the Rio Grande to fight for "Freedom in this Land". The American troops of the general Zachary Taylor were in Saltillo, Mexico and Mexico had not enough soldiers, the Mexican government called young people to fight, and the song says "we were young and full of life and none of us prepared to die". It's a beautiful song that tells us about American and Mexican history.
