Once upon a time, in the town of Udezu. A bad disease spread and afflicted the people.
About 350 years ago, during the Kanbun period (1661-1672), a bad disease spread in the area, and Ushitotenno was invited from the Gion Shrine in Kyoto. When a grand festival was held, a blue bee, transformed into a divine spirit, saved those who were ill with the disease.
The local people were so pleased that they carried the kiriko on their shoulders and paid a visit to Yasaka Shrine, which is said to have been the beginning of the Abare Matsuri. Today, the festival is known as a magnificent marine festival where about 40 or so kirikos (lanterns), each seven meters high, parade through the town, and two kirikos are thrown into the sea, rivers, or into the fire to be abare (burned).
