Among the abandoned villas in Veneto, Villa Gyulai-Friedenberg deserves special attention. It is an 18th-century building, enlarged in the mid-19th century to meet the needs of the family of General Gyulai of the Autro-Hungarian Empire, who used it as his residence until 1866. After that date, the villa was sold to the wealthy grain merchant Friedenberg. From 1943 the villa was used as a home for displaced persons and as a collection centre for Jews to be sent to extermination camps.
