    If they’re running and they’re not out of fuel they aren’t abandoned. You didn’t specify your location so it’s not uncommon for the engines to run over the weekend until the next crew comes for the start of the work week. If you happen to be at the foothills of a mountain grade those engines will be used to push the trains up and over the summit. If they were to shut them down it could take a long time to rewarm and rebuild air pressure. Since the trains operate on a schedule they need to be ready to go so they don’t cause a backup further down the line. There’s a reason they’re in an isolated area. It’s less likely they’ll be disturbed. It’s a good thing you didn’t attempt to operate them because it’s a federal offense with the same penalty as operating a commercial vessel. It’s not as straight forward to start and stop an engine as you might think. If you weren’t able to get it stopped there are track switches that might cause them to derail. If they’re on a switch there’s a good possibility another train could strike the engines. It’s one thing to be licensed to operate them. The penalties would be escalated without it.

    Has anyone noticed that: 1. The reverser was missing from the locomotive he entered. That probably wasn't the lead loco. 2. The crew might have been in the far loco. 3. One of the crew members might have been a friend of this guy, so he told the crew to hide so this guy could make a funny video. 4. It's always a possibility that these locos were remote control locos.

    Locomotives have a key-handle (reverser key) that is removed by the engineer when leaving the engine running. He is supposed to take the key with him (often they just hide them in the cab). In sub-zero temperatures, engines are always left running. With the key removed, the throttle cannot not be operated, so the engine cannot be operated. You need to have the key to move the engine.

    They also leave an engine running to provide brake air. I think its a bit anti-social to climb on operating equipment -- if this was old, out of service equipment parked out of the way then curiousity is understandable but you should leave live kit strictly alone.

I mean, shoot someone just leaves a hydraulically powered machine in someone's neighbourhood? Whats stopping teens from getting drunk and taking control of it and wrecking someone's house? Oh yea, they have ways to keep them from being used when unattended, just like these trains. Whats really simple is your notion that being turned on means you can just get up and go with it.

    +Faggerest Trains are manually turned, so it could be derailed in any turn. Someone could cause a huge mess if they pushed the throttle forward and then jumped out. Not to mention, in rural areas like the one seen in the video, most crossings don't have automatic gates, or even flashing lights. Could've been a huge deal, would definitely make national news. On top of that, it could always hit another train, or derail various other ways.

    Diesel electric trains are 2 stroke engines with water as coolant, not antifreeze. If the temp drops below 40 deg F they leave the engines running to keep the coolant from freezing. Starting a diesel engine uses more fuel and pollutes more than letting it idle a while. Yes, the reverser was missing. The reverser has three positions, reverse, forward, and neutral. In neutral the reverser [key] can be removed thus locking the throttle controller and disabling the locomotive. If he was not the engineer doing a video prank, then the engineer could have been down by the rail cars inspecting them, or he was off shift and the train was just waiting for the next engineer to arrive with a reverser key.

    I know you’re getting a lot of flack for boarding these units but they’re left running during winter to protect the engine blocks from getting damaged from the cooling water from freezing and expanding, this cracking the blocks. Each unit has a guru (or many) that’ll dump the water when it gets close to freezer to protect the engine but then you’ll have a unit in the boonies that’s dead and drained and disabled. That’s probably why they’re sitting their running. Also, train crew sometimes forgets to turn the bell off when they leave the units. I’ve seen them do it a few times in the yard.

Now that is an accident just waiting to happen, imagine tank cars with hazardous chemicals or petroleum.

    @@carcaridon you’re right and wrong. When freight cars are sitting disconnected from the loco and their air tanks are full of air you just dump the air from the tanks and release the brakes by spinning the hand brake. If the air tanks have no air, same as before, use the hand brake to release the brake. The hand brake is that round thing that looks like a big steering wheel. And when we dispatch a UP cop to an incident such as this that agent is a sworn 1181 aka federal officer and has the ability to arrest, cite, fine and if you're brazen enough to attack them, legally shoot you. Some education might go a long way for you. Railroads are regulated and controlled by federal mandate since the passage of the homeland security act, try reading.

It represents an enormous safety risk. I agree with the gentlemen who suggested it might be the engineer or conductor who is actually doing the taping. I myself spent many hours sitting on sidings. Armyconrad I don't know for sure if NS still makes them do that, but yeah, around 15 years ago, there was a big brouhaha about NS management taking out the toielts and putting in "hoppers" with a pink plastic bag lines. The unions threatened action, and some of the guy were pissed off enough to through the bags of poo and pee onto RRXs to show the public how NS has people pee on their RR. NS responded by going to the expense and trouble of putting serial numbers on EVERY BAG handed out to engine crews, thereby negating the "cost savings" of getting rid of the toilets. Gotta remember, management at NS is the coal country hillbillies who ran N&W; the more genteel Southern RW management style went out the window during the merger.

We leave them running all the time on sidings and stub tracks. So what? Not any big deal. Just because its runing doesnt mean you can move it. It can be a bad day when you need to move one and don't have a reverser with you. But it doesn't mean it is impossible to do. And if the crew that left took the reverser, they kind of wonder when they come back the next day and it isn't where they left the engine (s). And find a note saying "Next time leave the reverser in its designated location when going off duty." after they have an extra 1/4 mile walk to the engine.

And can take 3-4 times as long to do a simple switching move. Doing it for operation out on the mainline would not be as big a problem because you would not need to go from forward to reverse. Or reverse to forward more than once.

    Well yes and no. 'Common sense' is one thing, but reality is a different and much more relative standard. I prefer "knowledgeable Sense" My experience with 'Public Safety' (government) is a bit different than yours. Homeland Security makes thousands of impromptu inspections of all security issues. My fleet of ambulances was checked by them to be 'locked & secured', even when we responding to the WTC coming down, when I brought 3 BLS units to 'Ground Zero'. That has effected me ever since. The dust that I breathed was partly made up of the debris and remains of those that died there. Do you really believe that Emergency vehicles are only monitored by HS? Well, I'll let you know that they cover much more. You're philosophy implies that many security issues should not be monitored. What have you done to profess that you have a profound degree of security and public safety more profound then mine "everyone knows that your not supposed to mess with railroad equipment" - really? How does every single person on the planet know that? You clearly exaggerate. Did this male ignore signage that told them "No Trespassing"? Who knows? It can not be detected on the video. Your notion, however, is correct, but stating that UP is faultless is truly and unarguably faulted. The locomotives should have been shut down and disabled while unattended. This videographer was likely a common guy who didn't know legal issues and wasn't concerned particularly with the crews status or well being - or he would have contacted the carrier. But, Public Safety officers would certainly inspect the unattended train and contact UP to verify the equipment's status. The real issue is - why did he have access to those locomotives. Sorry to retort your statement. I don't wish for discontent, merely a clarification.

    You have to have a reverser to move it. Also, they have an auto start to keep air pressure built up. The guy just forgot to lock it.

  • @ConductorDon

    While I will say Im not yet a railroad employee. I did have a very close relationship with my now deceased uncle who was an engineer on CSX for 30 years. I do know that you could not have moved those units even if you tried because the reverser lever is out of its notch which renders the unit inoperable. This guy is NOT with Up, he is a criminal. Unless escorted by railroad personnel, you have no right to be on the ballast, let alone onboard a locomotive. If you want to work with locomotives which I do as well, do what Im doing. Join the military, railroads love to hire ex military. Then go to a school that offers an FRA conductor certification course like MODOC. They will even help you get a job with a railroad if you graduate. Then you'll be able to board locomotives "the right way" instead of trespassing.

    Even if you had the reverser in, the switches to the siding are likely remotely controlled by dispatch and were likely switched against the siding. So even if you had moved those units, you probably would have derailed them. Just think of the shit you would be in then.

    An old time train dude told me they do this because it takes many hours to get the engines up to operating temperature. I have seen them sit and idle for days on end.

  • @Greenrail1
    @Greenrail110 жыл бұрын

    Under newer carrier rules, these would have their doors locked. However, as some one pointed out, there was no reverser lever in the cab of the locomotive, rendering it immobile. With all due respect, you were trespassing. You should never do something like this. If caught, you will be prosecuted and spend some time, where you really don't want to be.

  • @cliffh5
    @cliffh57 жыл бұрын

    A former acquaintance (locomotive engineer) told me they would leave the engines idling 24 hours a day to avoid having to restart them. They would start them up and then remove the batteries. They stopped doing that when fuel prices went up.

    I'm a train conductor. This video is comical. Listening to this guy.. I love when he says 0:56 "hmmm should i sit down and drive the train" lol yeah please try and drive the train with out a reverser (locomotive key that puts the engine into operation mode) This guy is just a kid or young man that has no idea what he's talking about but it was a pleasure to watch. I need to smile more ;)

    To those people saying it's fake, this is the same condition that the locomotive involved in the tragic 2013 disaster in Canada where an oil train derailed in a town was left: Running, unlocked cab, on a main line. And no regulations were against it. They leave them running to keep the coolant warm and air brakes charged, but idk why they can't lock the cab. Except in the 2013 disaster, the locomotive had engine issues, brakes bled out, and the train ran away and derailed and the oil caught fire and killed a bunch of people and destroyed the town: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lac-M%C3%A9gantic_rail_disaster
