Abandoned Train In Lake Farmingdale New Jersey Marl Pit Saw Mill Pond Weird NJ

I set out to find the abandoned train which is an urban legend and was mentioned in issue 24 of Weird New Jersey Magazine. This is located off the Railroad tracks in Farmingdale NJ which are only in operation on Thursdays off of Route 524.

I worked for allaire park back in 1968-1969 and we had permission from the jersey central railroad to drive back where you are in the video to pick up old railroad ties. I saw the train engine you are talking about....however I don't quite remember the exact location in the lake. I would have the go back there to refresh my memory. Things change dramatically in 50 years!!!

There is a man-made lake in an abandoned marl pit in Mantua NJ. I was told by some of the older locals that there is a train at the bottom of that lake. I've hiked past that lake for years and not once caught any glimpse of a submerged train mostly due to the opacity of the water which has a greenish blue color. The lake is within a public park named Ceres park. It's a wonderful place to hike and mountain bike.

I was there back in the 80's, my in-laws lived on Shafto St. You could walk to the end of the road, through the woods to the Marl Hole. Water back then was a bluish clear and you could see the Engine pretty well. Fished it a little never caught much of anything.

I grew up in Farmingdalw and fished the Marl Hole many times. My Grandfather, also from town, said too that it was a jockey engine to do with the mining of the marl. Marl is organic and used for fertilizing farm fields. Iwas was thinking of going back down there to show my son the stack.

I used to live across field from the marl holes. Actually there’s 4 of them. Great fishing once you beat the lily pads out of the way. Snapping turtles as big as garbage can lids. The Migamahome creek ran thru our property across from Tom’s Tavern. You could dig marl out of the stream bank. Any relation to Megill Hardware? Used to love that place. My dad did the grange hall renovation. I think Farmingdale was a great place to grow up. I live a 2600’ in WV so a bit of altitude change.

That is not a saw mill pond. It is the Marl Hole. There is a box car down in there as well as an ol' steam jennie. You can see the roof from the bank. Most kids in town learned to fish there.

  • @unclematty56

+NJ Outdoors (Outdoor Adventures) Never knew the whole story. It does sit up right. The exhaust pipe from the jennie is closer to the bank. If you are walking from town, the boxcar is about 1/3 of down the length. I have seen it from the bank and passed over it with a canoe while fishing. Marl is a type of soil that is rich with nutrients and was used as fertilizer. That's the reason the Marl Hole was originally dug.

+NJ Outdoors (Outdoor Adventures) Not to many folks around anymore that would know. Most of the ol timers have passed or moved. Most folks up town are newer to the area or if they been there awhile, never listened to the old stories. Most folks never knew there was a powder mill in town before it blew up. You were able to still find bricks and such from the building years ago in the woods. That was down the tracks a little ways from the Marl Hole. query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=9806EED61131E033A25753C2A9679D94659ED7CF is the link to the story on the powder mill.

Actually I grew up right behind the Mark Hole as we called it. There’s actually 3 pits there. The biggest one is next to track. I It is a train . It’s the steam engine used for mining the green sand or marl as its called . Great fishing there. The stack of the steam engine is as you look at the pond is toward the left and no more than 30 yards from the shore. There were snapping turtles as big as trash can lids. My dad used to swim there . We grew up on big farm which is now a golf course on Asbury Ave. I can tell you more about it and the powder mills further down the track. Oh by the way that track enters NAD Earle the Navy Ammunition Depot .

Growing up in Farmingdale in the late 50's. The train was very easy to see Huge no no back in the day to go there. Luckily never caught. Story was it was an extremely foggy night..the train missed the turn and went into " the marl hole". Six people were on the train...no one survived as the story goes!! Early 60's a father and son were fishing in a small boat..the boat for some reason got stuck in the under growth in the water. Both tried to free the boat...fell over board Some one heard their screams for help...ran back to get help in town. The story goes that several men ran down the tracks to the hole...but never found the bodies As the years passed the stories got really creepy. One is if you walk the tracks at night you can still hear the train... and the screams of father and son. Never attempted it myself !!!

The Southern Railway never operated in New Jersey. It operated in the southern US, hence the name. The railroad that served the area was the Central Railroad of New Jersey (CNJ). Perhaps you're confusing this with the southern division of the CNJ, which is the division that served the area.

The story, as I understand it, The lake that you show, is/was a Marl Pit. One that was actually mined. The train was used to bring the Marl to the surface. as the story goes, the pit began to flood and eventually caught the train in its last train up. Now there are parts of the story that I was told that just didn't make scene. but i will be looking into that as time allows.
