Abandoned - The Crook Inn - Licenced in 1604 - Scottish Borders

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The Crook Inn is an inn in the Scottish Borders. It is one of many claimants to be the oldest inn in Scotland. It was licensed in 1604. Robert Burns wrote "Willie Wastle's Wife" there. It has served as a coaching inn, a Post Office and source of employment. The hotel was refurbished in 1936 in the then-current Art Deco style, and retains many of the features installed at that time. It has also, over the years, become a place of pilgrimage for members of the Porteous family, visiting the site of nearby Hawkshaw, their former ancestral home on the hills above Tweeddale and the Fruid Reservoir.

Thanks Alan, the photos were taken the same year the business was sold. The new owner wanted to make it into flats as the hotel wasn't viable. He didn't get planning permission so has left it.

This is heart breaking to watch! I was born and breed in Tweedsmuir, and The Crook was the heart of the community. I had a Saturday job as a kp when i was at School, when i left school i became head chef. I work right up to the day it closed it was my 21st birthday, the last owner run it to the ground because he wanted to turn it into flats. So much history being lost, the original bar is over 400years old. Robert Burns drank there, and all the wonderful 30s fixtures were beautiful. I no longer live in the Borders, but I am glad i have my memories of socialising and working there.

Wow thanks for sharing your fond memories. The building has a lovley long history an from what I gather had many returning visitors. I think the current owner is still complaining about the amount of money agreed by the local community project to buy it from him. Some people think they can do what they want to make lots of money an not care about the community's they are destroying. It's obvious it was a thriving business until he took it over, thus the local council decision not to grant planning permission. Thanks again for watching an sharing your lovley piece of history 😊

Pass this alot when I'm out on my motorbike, never seen it functional, it looked stunning when it was open in this vid, so so sad, think there would be a market for it now, I know the area well and with all the staycation ppl now it might be able to survive, but it would take alot of money to bring it back now ☹️

Thanks I'm pleased you enjoyed it, I agree it's a waste of a building an with everyone having stay cations or would have been a great place to stay. I've not been past recently but I hear its started to be restored/converted for community use. As far as I'm aware they have knocked down the small out building. There was a big sign with the plans for it. Fingers crossed it finally get finished this time 🙂

Thanks Jay, from what I hear it was a really good place. Unfortunately some people just want to make lots of money from places by turning into something else instead of what the community needs. An I agree this virus has caused a lot of businesses to close, it's a shame really but that means lots more to explore 😁
