Not only that, but Fenway Park has the Green Monster simply because they ran out of room. The Red Sox never had an issue with "rooftop boxes," like they did at Wrigley Field and S-H-I-B-E Park. The Red Sox couldn't buy out Lansdowne Street, so they built the wall to keep baseballs from breaking windows nearby. It didn't become green until 1947.

Well, I live in the area, I went to games at Connie Mack several times from 1967-1970. First of all the stadium was in a state of disrepair for years. There were large portions of the RF stands roped off due to collapsing structure. And point of fact the 1969 season was supposed to be the last. But the Vet wasn't ready so the Phillies played the 1970 season...in their NEW uniform design...in the OLD ballpark. Also the area parking had been restricted since there were additional houses, stores and businesses erected in the area which took up the once existing parking lots. The Blue laws still existed so crowds were there on Sundays in abundance. They could park in supermarket lots. During the week, not so easy. You had to park at lots maybe a couple miles away and take shuttle buses to the stadium. However the sight lines at the stadium were excellent at least in the areas I sat in. In the same time frame I saw games at D.C. / RFK stadium, and Memorial Stadium in Baltimore...as a young child i enjoyed the experience at CMS over the ones in D.C. and Balt.

Sadly the location wasn't at the most desirable place (21st & Lehigh)and at the time "urban decay" was at it's apex at that time which probably led to The Phillies wanting a new stadium as far back as the early 1960's. I went to Murrell Dobbins High School which was right across the street (although when I went there 1978-82 Connie mack was LONG GONE) but I DID have the honor of going to Connie Mack in 1970 for Larry Hisle Bat Day so I got to see that BEAUTIFUL grass!

My first Phillies game was in '69 at Connie Mack. I was nine years old and it was batting helmet day. As a little kid I just wanted to see a HR and boy oh boy did I get my wish as the Phils lost a 19-17 slugfest to the Reds. My lasting memory of that game was the first time Dick Allen came to the plate and he was greeted by a loud mixture of cheers and boos....and then he proceeded to hit a frozen rope off the top of the Ballantine scoreboard in right-center for a double. I don't remember it but my older brother says Allen also hit a mammoth HR over the LF roof but I haven't bothered to check the boxscore to see if that indeed might be true. Yeah, the neighborhoods surrounding the ballpark were seedy in those days and parking was a nightmare. Everyone seemed ready for a change and welcomed the arrival of Veterans Stadium with open arms. At least that's my recollection of it from a little kid's perspective.

What beautiful stadiums they built back then. Shibe Park outside facade with the corner tower has to be one of the best architectural designs in American ballpark history. This, Yankee Stadium and the old Ebbets Field need to be duplicated in future designs. Go with the new retro field layouts but they really need more charm and beauty in the facades.

There's no "r" in Shibe. Also one major detail left out of this video is the Phillies would have had less than zero interest in renovating Shibe Park. The deteriorating neighborhood and lack of parking were the primary factors why they wanted a new stadium. Bob Carpenter bought land in South Jersey in the early 60's and threatened to move the team to Jersey if Philly didn't build them a modern revenue generating stadium in a low crime neighborhood

I’m from south Jersey and my dad was a young boy when he first went to Shibe Park in 1970. He really remembers the field and the grandstands. I’m fascinated by the exterior. It’s a French renaissance look with the center rotunda. Of all the ball parks that have gone, I wish Shibe Park was still here with the A’s. I don’t think contemporary Phillies fan know how great the Philadelphia Athletics were. We should have never let them leave. If the A’s would have stayed, I think they would be the city favorite. Can you imagine the Philadelphia A’s winning all those championships in the 70’s and the one in the late 80’s? The Phillies would have been a second class team like how the Mets are with the Yankees. One can only dream about it now.

You gotta do more research on the area of this park. The area was a war zone then by 1970 and even more so now, it would have never lasted. There still is no easy access to this area from the surrounding suburbs let alone people like myself who live in Philly (I’m only 3 blocks from citizens bank park) to get to Shibe park. Once this new Sixers area in downtown happens it will further show how preservation of Shibe Park could have never happened.

A very intriguing alternate history, indeed. Philly would probably now have a “Shibetown” like Chicago’s Wrigleyville, and I might even be living there. Instead, the area around the ballpark today is a pretty nondescript neighborhood that, in my nearly a decade of living in Philly, I don’t think I have ever even driven past.

It is in the Swampoodle section of North Philly and even it's road access from all points is tenuous at best. It was okay for 1910 when most of North Philly was intact and prosperous but the current sports complex serves the metro area well....

Economics and demographics sealed shines fate. Demographics. North Philly was an industry neighborhood. By the late 50s early 60s factory closures ran rampant. Disinvestment in public transit and investment in auto also made difficult for white fans who moved out to the burbs and jersey. The neighborhood became dangerous. Economics. It was simple. The land where the current complex is was then the city outskirts. The was undeveloped and CHEAP.

My favorite of the classic ballparks. Absolutely beautiful. It would have been great if it could have been saved like Wrigley or Fenway. But the surrounding neighborhood really went down hill in the 60s and 70s and this would have made it very difficult to pull off the same thing Boston and Chicago did. There’s a great book called “To everything a season” about the rise and fall of Shibe Park and North Philadelphia if you’d like to know more.

RFK stadium, and Memorial Stadium in Baltimore...as a young child i enjoyed the experience at CMS over the ones in D.C. and Balt.
