I am a former GE employee and spent some time at this facility. I won't name it, but it was very well known and controversial at the national level. It occupies a unique place in the history of nuclear power. I am astounded at the low level of security. I am also amazed that the site still has not been put to any effective use after all these years. It will never be a nuclear plant, of course, but the site is valuable and local electric rate payers deserve something.

why the name of the power plant is such a critical information? in your point of view are there consequences once the name is disclosed ? EDIT: Is weird thatt you are not naming Shoreham Nuclear Power Plant. Mostly because it has an interesting story to it. Really there are no consequences. It doesn't take much research to locate this plant. I felt that by naming it I was encouraging people to wander around in it. Yes, the vid is fascinating and I watched all of it. That said, it's a bad idea to explore these places. People could get in trouble or get hurt. I really think the utility should do a better job with security. As I said before, they should also get serious about tearing down this costly and dangerous white elephant, selling what they can to salvagers and putting the site to productive use.

My husband and I watch your videos every day. Very well done and I especially love this one. For ten years I worked in a laboratory that analyzed samples from a power plant and its surroundings. I never got to see the plant, and I always wondered what it was like. This really satisfied my curiosity. We look forward to more videos by you and Kristy.

I want to say, I stumbled upon this site a week ago, after watching various other abandoned channels. I have now been on here all week & enjoying every video! This one, the old lady's estate & the vintage pharmacy shop, are my favorites so far.I think you two keep me watching, because I like the way you go about it, & pan around the room & show so many things, & your thoughts on what you're seeing. Man, that control room is incredible. I can't believe how pristine it is - no tagging, no looting. You don't see that.... well, ever, really. They could make a fortune renting it out as a movie set!

After a little Googling, you can see this decommissioned nuclear plant has been fitted with two 42W GE LM6000PC Jet Engine Generator gas turbines (8:46 this is probably one of them) to provide power to the grid, so its probably unmanned 99% of the time as its probably remote controlled.

Pretty darn cool...........someone must be in there somewhere, surely I think its pretty cool not to destroy or tag anything.....take nothing but pictures and video........thumbs up to you guys

The Alarms sound like when the Nuclear power plant has a leak or other problem to warn the people living near by you may have radiation leakage there.

You do know that radioactive waste is stored at that facility? Better check your radiation level. I did a government study on nuclear power safety. Government engineers took stuff out of safety study. Three-Mile Island accident would never have happened if not for government misdeeds. You guys took a dangerous chance.

I only just started following you guys this weekend and cool explore! Thanks for sharing. As to some of the comments about radiation and theft.......there was literally more radioactive material left unguarded in the abandoned hospital they explored with working x-ray machines on several floors

I would never explore those abandoned nuclear power-plants... even if it is decomissioned and all fuels have been removed it may still have radiation.

Interesting video, but you guys should have had a radiation detector. Your shoes could be contaminated, radiation doesn't wash off, it goes into your body, your bones, heart, brain, so on. If you go back again take a detector and see what it says, I'm certainly curious. Good video.

This plant actually never operated. It was fully built, and the locals petitioned to have it shut down. There is still a power generation plant on the property that uses jet engines to produce electricity.

that's interesting that there are still machines in the plant that they chose not to shut down. I wonder if it was for cleanliness purposes such as water pumps and fuel for the plant.

plants like these, are often standing in this state for some time, before they start cleaning up. And it's mainly due to radioactivity that can still be left over. In this state, there are usually 2-3 workers, working there, taking measurement, controlling that everything is safe until the demolition day. After a shutdown, they let it all stand in a cooldown period.

Crazy footage and great vid. I worked in nuke plant for over 10 and it just blows me away how you two just walked into the main control room like it was nobody's business. If that was an active nuke plant you could not even get close to it without the proper clearance. I spent a lot of time in the MSCC (Main Security Control Center) which was located within the main control room. The plant I worked at looked very similar to this one. Thanks for sharing this with us. Appreciate your work.

It all depends what job you are looking for. General maintenance in mechanical, electrical or instrumentation depends on your experience and at the very least an associates degree. To be a control room operator you have to work yourself up to that from the plant operations group in most cases. There are radiation techs, safety people, custodians and a lot of work was performed by various contractors. I was in security and you did not reach the high levels of supervision or management without a lot of job experience. There are clerical positions and just about any other kind of job found in a large industrial setting. Most people who work at nuke plants spend very little time in power block if any. I think if you are looking at nuclear engineering or that sort of thing I know a good many people came out of the Navy. People who worked around reactors on ships or subs were recruited. These are strange facilities because when they are running at full power, even though there might be a general plant population on day shift of about 500-800 people, you see very few within the power block, which the reactor, turbine or auxiliary buildings. I spend most of my time in the main control room area and there were seldom more than a dozen around at any given time.

Actually, this plant is in standby mode. It's not at full power. It's fuel elements have been removed. The plant is not producing any power. It's getting power from the coal fired grid. Thanks for the tour. Oh, you should know, I used to work for the police department, and this plant is live monitored, through cctv, 24-7. Had you reached out, and adjusted any of the controls in that control room, there would've been about a dozen swat all over you inside of a minute. The alarm you heard was either a monthly test, or an actual weather warning siren. As it was, since you clearly weren't about to do anything, they didn't bother with you. Oh, also, had you made your way toward the spent fuel element storage area, there would've been swat all over you, for sure.

I WOULD BE WRITING NOTES EVERYWHERE, DAY 532, THE ZOMBIES HAVE EATEN THE REST OF MY CREW....

this has to be one of the cooolest things to explore. especially just sitting there abandoned for all those years it seems

I'm pretty sure that 100% of the fuel is removed during the decommissioning process of a nuclear power plant. This includes the core and all of the spent fuel inventory.

Just so you know, the piece of paperwork that you filmed in the control room office has the plant's company name on it. I'm pretty sure you didn't out it on purpose but since it's there and other people will find it too. The Long Island Lighting Company only had one decommissioned plant. LILCO, the logo on the page at 15:34 was the clue. We all make mistakes. I just wanted to make you aware of it so you can avoid such things in the future.

That was probably the most amazing exploration video I have seen yet! I can't believe that you found an open door to get in. I am also incredibly surprised that you didn't run into anyone. 1994, and Dot-Matrix Printers... Hmmm.... Yeah.... Safe Bet, this 'station' is remote controlled, perhaps nothing lit on the panels indicate 'inactive' status. OK, RNK was correct in saying "Do Not Pick Up the Phone" lot of times, the phones are active, in-case, of some issue as VoIP lines.. I wonder, if there was 'closed-circuit-cameras' or 'spy-cams' installed when it was abandoned? No house-keeping staff to sweep and tidy up the place? At least make it appear lived in, or used? I dunno... don't sound right.. Relay-Emergency station? If a Hurricane was heading there, an Official and Security should've gone by there to check the place for 'storm-shelter-seeking' folks... Lots of questions...

I think it's cool that the two of them do this together. What they say in video is so true. They do not mean any harm when they do not steal, damage, graffiti the buildings. They are just trying to give the world a glimpse of reality, which I find very interesting, showing all of the once so beautiful places just left to decay, left abandoned, to go to waste. You get to see the homes people once occupied left abandoned, the business once in use, left abandoned, etc. It shows you that no matter what walk of life you come from, times can get hard, people can have financial problems that become too much for them and they have to start all over again and leave one life behind to begin another in a new place.

I think a lot of people know this place is the Shoreham nuclear power plant in Long Island.

This is the Shoreham Nuclear Power Plant located at 40° 57′ 40″ N, 72° 51′ 54″ W. It took me like 5 minutes to figure it out. It was built in the mid 70's to mid 80's and was never licensed to operate due to protests. The core was removed and the facility was cold stored. It's just an expensive eye sore now.

To everyone commenting, this plant had a nuclear part and an electrical part. When Chernobil happened, they decided to shut the nuclear plant down leaving the electrical plant still open and working. Therefore, the lights are still on, because they are part of the same grid but it's completely abandoned.

Hey I'm a first time viewer and I really liked the video! Way to go on getting in there! I bet it wasn't easy. I'm a rocket designer and I enjoy seeing these old control rooms, it gives a lot of inspiration. However, try to keep documents out of the video. I was able to pause the video and look at one of the filmed documents and I was able to find out what and where you guys where at. Just some helpful advice. If I was able to do it, others can too. I also enjoying seeing these places in their current state and wouldn't want to see it destroyed. So just be careful. Thanks for the AWESOME footage. I wish I could see more of the control room, pictures, just for inspiration.

that's quite the facility. I'd bring a Geiger counter with me to check background radiation. you'd never know why it was left abandoned. kinda sketchy. never know if there's radio active material leaking or if the land is contaminated.. one epic sight though! good footage.

I find it hard to believe, in today's post 9/11 world, that the u.s. gov't would leave a nuclear reactor, unguarded.

this is the reactor in Long Island which was shut down in 1994 because of public outcry about nuclear power - the local government used a loophole of denying a permit for the emergency escape route, which meant they couldn't get a license to operate... so it's been sitting there unused for 23 years. they use it for movies now.

That round blue thing was an old hard disk platter spindle.. Not sure if you said that, as I had the sound off, but they are quite valuable and antique in the scheme of the computing era.

Fascinating vid, I looked up the plant in question and did a bit of reasearch (no I won't divulge it's name, look it up yourself). Interestingly, it was never actually used and there's no more fuel there, it was all transported away so y'all were completely safe. I however can not find any info on why the power and many lights are still on and why it sounds as though there's still motors running. I still think the most shocking thing is that it's unlocked! From what I've read there's supposed to be security. I also found one person who was able to get a proper tour. Takes a little fun out of the video, but still an interesting look into the plant!

I filmed a building called alien workz it looks sort of like this one :)

The placement of many of the pieces of equipment and furniture make me think that there was chaos taking place upon exiting these buildings...

So, how was that trip to the restroom? Was it still functional?

At first I thought it was a restroom for the people in the control room, but it turns out it was a stairwell. I found a restroom eventually, took a piss in a urinal and it did not flush. But in part 2 we find a busted water main, so there seems to be running water some where.

Please be very careful with yourself in a place like this... Radiation hazard, you can get electrocuted just by coming close to the wrong power cabinet or touching the wrong stuff... I am an electrician and electronics enthusiast and I can tell you this place is very very dangerous to be at... you need radiation measuring equipment and protection like a breathing mask and thick gloves and such and a real understanding of these things, I do not want to criticize you but like to see you get out alive and well... take care of yourself...

Your New York accents, and the timing of the challenge in the morning to doing the explore 6 hours later tells me you were at the Shoreham Nuclear Generating Facility in Long Island. Closed in 1989, and fully decommissioned in 1994. The Nuclear fuel was taken to the Limerick Nuclear Generating Station in Pennsylvania in 1995. Nothing radioactive was on site during this channels visit.

I live looking at this facility and can tell you that is abandoned, it is not being used for anything. It was built to be used but then got abandoned cause the neighbors, who is us, petitioned to not have radioactive material near our homes. So yes, it is abandoned. @Doc Detroit

16:03, on the shelf, are two more disk packs for the computers. The computers are free-standing units, not actually connected to the plant control systems.

Long Island tax payers are still paying for it. My last bill, I payed $5.13 for it.

Not sure if this is actually a Nuclear plant or a Hydro plant. If this is a Nuclear plant it was never commissioned and there is no need to keep power to it. Which leads me to believe this isn't a generation station but a satellite station (not as in space but as in remote) , used for boosting of transmission lines of electricity. That can be done through solid state and remain unmanned. If there was a problem in the station a crew could be sent out to do a repair. The lack of radioactive signs and the large turbines compared to smaller ones needed in nuclear setups suggest this to be hydro. though I could be wrong. either way the power is on most likely cause it's still in use as a satellite booster station.

Right; "The Proper People" and "Exploring with Josh" and you, have all now been to the same power plant. Turns out it isn't that secret after all!

I live on the street across from the small river on the back side of this compound. Just came home at night to something weird going on in the courtyard. There are these huge halogen work lights set up out there. Not sure what's going on, but it is very weird.

It seems that it is more cost effective just to totally abandon all the equipment leaving it just sit rather than to decommission all the controls and salvage what may be salvageable.

I live on Long Island. If anyone want's to travel, this is located in Wading River. For whatever reason, there are still some people going in and out of it every day so be careful. Power is still running in many zones and there is a lot of mold. There is also a huge heating tower smoke stack thing for those climbers. DISCLAIMER: I'm not saying anyone should trespass this area. In terms sake, this is illegal and dangerous as the plant isn't actually closed, its just not generating power out anymore, and not many people work on site anymore. They do have security still and I'm surprised you havent gotten caught on camera or by a guard. Theres a plant just like this in Monroe Michigan and they still have lights and a crew of like 5 running the whole plant.

The light ballasts are making the humming noise. Probably left on for years. Amazing how technology has changed over 40 years.

assuming that there is still nuclear fuel being stored in cooling ponds they most likely would still have the power on to keep pumps running to keep the cooling ponds full. It takes hundreds if not thousands of years for nuclear fuel rods to cool down.

Nice he is in the old LILCO Shoreham Nuclear Power Plant which never went online as a power plant it was using small amounts of radiation till its closure in 1994

Several signs designating "lot #s" indicates there was an auction at some point. That would NOT have happened if there were radiological dangers. I guess if you're the power company, you can just leave the lights on? The humming sound was the lights, FYI.

Nice find! Stunning! But that place is not super secret bro. It's Trojan Nuclear Power Plant in Oregon. It's quite the gorgeous time capsule, but it's a federal crime to get caught in there... You may even consider removing this video at your earliest convenience since it could be used as evidence... (Kinda Scary when NSA comes knocking at your door to cart you off at 3am!!) O.o Anyhoo, it ran for 16 years and developed cracks in the GIANT steam generator tubes. Those were the large tank like tubes that you came across that had been cut out of the room (@ time marker 5:18), leaving most of the middle of the room empty. There is still serious radiated material that can't be easily removed and requires some form of cooling till it's either completely dismantled or till 1000 years is past and it cools down... Whichever comes first. That's why there was still power and lots of noise. Cooling pumps were still in operation. The truly crazy part is, they could have repaired the steam tanks, but the enviro-wackos kept protesting and making a stink, so they didn't. So now Oregon pays 2x as much for electricity as they keep power to the old nuclear plant to keep the cooling system functional, and also run 4x as many coal plants to provide infrastructure power to the state. So not only is it more expensive, but it's dirty coal power as well. Aint the enviro-wackos wonderful? Always screwing stuff up with the best of intentions. And you and I pay for it all in the end out of OUR pockets.

If this plant is never working earlier, why waste money to build one... Nice tour btw, it's also surprising lights are on. Because if lights are on, the fire risk is still there if some machines or meters gets overheated. That is why electricity should shut down on abandoned place.

That room with the massive machinery and the pipes leading to it all is the Main Turbine/Generator Room, where; if the plant had been activated, the turbines would have been spun up to millions of RPMs using the steam coming into them from the piping. And then once the main safety clutches were disengaged, the generators in the same room (the units that don't have piping running to them) would have also spun into life, sending billions of volts surging into the wires to power homes all over NY. Think on that, once you've seen this video. EDIT: The reason they maintain this place so well could be that they want to use it again as an active nuclear plant sometime in the future. Secondary edit: The smaller control room could be either an auxiliary control room or a subsystem control area. Tertiary edit: Personally, I would release the Instagram username of that hypocritical fool who tried to accuse you of not leaving the places you go in-situ. That would teach him/her not to mess with anyone again! Edit #4: Speaking of said fool, I think he/she was setting you up to be arrested. Be careful where you go when it comes to this type of dare/challenge!

you should make a flyer for the front door to let security and police know your there and your not vandles.

In the U.K. We have Nuclear Police who guard all nuclear licensed sites and are armed with assault rifles and are allowed to shoot anyone caught trespassing.
