I'm from NOLA and my brother was in that shit hole during katrina for a bullshit weed charge! He was only in there for 2 days before the hurricane landed. He suffers from severe PTSD and still to this day won't talk about what happened. Thank god he was able to get on with his life and has a beautiful family and great job now. For awhile he was like a shell of himself because of the shit he saw in there. Thanks for sharing because I've always been curious what it looked like inside!

I was a Sherriff’s deputy at Orleans Parish Prison back in 2016. They had just opened the new jail that’s called OJC(Orleans Justice Center) and my class was one of the first few classes to start off working in the new jail. During our academy nearing graduation, they took us on a tour of this building (OPP). They still had some deputies working in there in some parts of it. It was filled with rats, old food trays with rotted food still on them, mold, etc. Absolutely atrocious.

The handcuffs you found near the beginning were Ankle style. Those control modules in the officer's control room can also be used to turn off the water in ALL the cells when they have an inmate shakedown. You can't flush your contraband down the bowl. EXCELLENT explore, Rob!!

They used this jail after Hurricane Katrina until 2012. That is when they open the new jail. Living here in New Orleans I can remember back in 2009 when guards was letting inmates out at night partying on Bourbon St.. Drugs and alcohol was allowed in by guards. It was over packed with up to 6 to 10 inmates in each cell, some sleeping on the floor. They just let this place go and did not do anything with it.

A 'jail' is also known as a 'detention center'. These facilities are for accused inmates awaiting trial that cannot post bond or whose bail has not been set. After a conviction at trial, the inmate is sentenced and sent to 'prison' . So while the terms 'jail' and 'prison' are confused a lot, they really aren't the same thing. You had the right idea Rob, describing this facility as a 'city jail' and a stopping point for inmates on their way elsewhere. Just to add confusion: COUNTY jails can serve as both detention centers and prisons depending on the severity of the crime committed and length of sentence (shorter)

  • @adamtarver

KIMBER yep. Same here. Those are most definitely leg irons, everyone on the bottom tiers drowned, and those were definitely not birth control pills. We both know that that’s the way inmates get their meds nowadays. And that “skeleton” key most certainly won’t open every door. Lol. He’d actually probably have a hard time finding the door it actually does unlock. All those keys look the same for a reason. But you and I both know that. It looks like the city has had it cleaned up after the storm. Because I am don't see water marks on hardly any of the walls or surfaces. It appears that maybe the city did originally plan to salvage the building. Cause your right, all of the furniture is in place and I would have expected the inside of this place to be absolutely dripping in mold and fungus and gunk all over the walls and all over everything. Crazy. Some stuff is disarray, but overall, you can't really tell the place took on water up to the ceilings in places. Nasty Katrina water.

"You'd have no idea an office was in this particular building". This guy was pretty mean but either he or the security guards can point you to a man by the name of Roy... This is sad. I understand there are people that NEED to be locked up but this is for certain a business. 24 people housed in one itty bitty room..our system is so broken. People should never have to live in an environment like this. So much could be done with the young generation to make sure they never see this place but its better for business to not teach love compassion and understanding for EVERYONE not just hand pick who people have compassion for. This is slavery, modern day slavery. Human trafficking even. You get in the system and sometimes you don't get out. Very sad feelings watching this video as so many tormented soils in a small area. Not to mention the tortured souls that were connected to these people in jail or people fasly accused and their families and friends having to endure their incarceration too. Very sad. GOD HELP US. I didn't live threw Katrina but I heard that the bottom was full of sewage and that it was backing up in the bathrooms and that they stacked bodies in the stair wells.

The blue shoes were not shoes, they were like a walking boot for injured feet. Cuffs are ankle cuffs! Metal mouth trays were more painful for use! Probably all they could get! Interesting video.

There are so many Parrish's in Louisiana that never recovered from this hurricane! I'll never forget Barbra Bush's comment about moving a lot of people to Texas"There better off now than they were before" The roots were deep in Louisiana ❤

Jail history this was the parish jail before Katrina. After Katrina they reopened house of detention that had no heat or air-conditioning. They even rebuilt the old jail behind the court house. And a huge new complex.
