ABOUT PREACHER!!
Preacher Lawson was born In Portland, Oregon, but raised most of his adolescence in Memphis, TN. He moved 20 times before age 10, but if you ask him what city he’s from, he’ll say Orlando, FL. Because that's where he grew as a comedian. Preacher started writing jokes when he was 16 for and decided to perform for the first time at age 17 (as a bet between he and his mother). Best decision of his life.
Preacher won the 2015 Funniest Comedian In Florida, the 2016 Seattle International Comedy Competition and, in 2017, appeared on season 12 of “America’s Got Talent.” He made it to the finals (top 10) and appeared in the America’s Got Talent Live! show in Las Vegas.
In 2019, Preacher was invited to compete on “America’s got Talent: The Champions,” advanced to the finale and received the most votes from superfans of the United States. In the finale, he came in 5th place overall. Preacher also competed in “Britain's Got Talent: The Champions” later in 2019 and advanced through to the finale after receiving the most votes from superfans in the audience. He finished in the top 7.
In November 2019, Preacher released his first comedy special, “Preacher Lawson: Get To Know Me” on BET+ (bit.ly/PreacherBET). Filmed at the Vic Theatre in Chicago, the hour-long special centers around Preacher’s life experiences, including his run on American’s Got Talent and his ongoing life struggles with kitten allergies, veganism and cold weather-induced ashiness.
Preacher currently performs stand up comedy across the country (tour dates at preacherlawson/tour) and creates content for his KZread and social media channels.

Thirty years ago, I had been working in retail for a while and worked with several people close to my age. I was surprised to learn how many of them had "bad" parents. It inspired me to write a letter of gratitude to my parents who were still married, even after raising three children. I think the "still being married" part says a lot. They did separate for a while once and went through three years of marriage counseling. They decided to stay married. Years later, in my thirties (I'm the youngest), Mom told me that she and Dad were closer than ever. They were born in 1936 and 1942; each grew up in tough times and my mother was an only child whose parents divorced when she was ten. My parents are of the generation that didn't quit when times got hard and didn't so easily throw away things.

For me personally, I had to spend time grieving first before I could start fixing it. But I think you're right about remaining in complain mode all the time especially as an adult with all the resources to help you.

I love this so much on so many levels. Cutting off parents is epidemic in our society. Thanks for shedding light and much humor on the concept that there is a more evolved way to handle family relations. Awesome! A little gratitude can go a long way! And, yeah, most people have not been left at Sea World permanently! For real!

Wow. I wanna write something about how I think Preacher's maybe kinda minimizing the degree to which parents can mess kids up. Even short of abandoning them at Sea World. 💥"Mom and Pop, they will f--- you up. For sure. Love so deep, kills you in your sleep. It's true." -- Talking Heads, "Sax and Violins"
