Aaron's 1996 Impala SS ERE-399 naturally aspirated. LT1 tuned by James Short

495 rear wheel horse power. All Natural 399 ci stroker. It's a 395 cid rotating assembly with a bit more stroke added to the crank and less decking of the block.

The engines is basically one of a kind in that Aaron wanted an exclusive and special engine built by Ellwein Engines. (That's me). I figure why not make an LT1 with the displacement cubic inches to match my race car #399 In the old days I called my deal, "The 399 Race Shop".

    Considering a 392 scat pack makes a bout 425whp this a great build out of the 396 lt1. Plenty of power for all motor.

    Agreed. I'm amazed at the good reliable power from the factory now a days. Back in 1996 I though this car had a lot of power at 260 crank horsepower. Danm.

    @@EllweinEngines and that was because gm tuned the car to basically only run lolol at the stock compression numbers no way in hell these car should’ve ran on 87 octane lol……. Richard Holdner proved it makes 361 Hp / Close 400 ft tq at the crank with tune and headers. I ran into a a 392 charger this weekend playing on the highway in my bolt on 95 ss, I took the hit, of course he came back on the big end but I held my own. The guy was so impressed he couldnt believe I was still lt1…. People under estimate these engines rather they are bolt on or built strokers.

    ​@@ceenice3000clear image automotive is the only way to go if you want headers that actually fit and you won't have to grind anything or possibly sacrifice AC. They're the only company that currently custom makes them specifically for these cars as far as i know. But they cost a decent penny.

    Does the stock LT1 in the 1996 Impala SS have a 4 bolt or 2 bolt main? Anyway of upgrading to the 4 bolt main if it comes standard with only 2 bolt main?

    2 bolt. All have 2-bolt except the Corvette. All Corvette LT1 are 4-bolt. If you have a 2-bolt you can get Milodon 4-bolt main caps and have a machine shop do the coversion.

    thanks. There is some video of the car from 3 years ago when I was first putting it together. Basic idle and talking to the camera to describe to Aaron the current status. Check my channel for videos that have 399 in the title. Aaron's car is one of my 1st 24x LS1 PCM conversion cars. James Short did the base tune.

    I would be super happy with 650 engine horsepower but that would be with the best of the best tuning

    actually I think Aaron had his rear wheels (stock wheels) widened. They are some size wider than stock.. Still 17" diameter.
