I just built a ripper 1776cc for my 63 Beetle. It’s amazing how such a small amount of HP is needed to make these light little cars move.

deesine....I've owned a 71 Beetle, sold it and bought a 66 Cal Bug, and then I saved up and bought a 64 Notchback that had an 1835, dual port heads, dual Kadrons, Porsche 914 polished rims, and a Rino 5spd race trans....sold both my 66 Bug and 64 Notch because my now ex-wife hates air cooled VW's ...in fact, she hates all classic cars...the worst part? Dude who bought my Notch let his 17yr old kid drive it, who then proceeded to wrap it around a light pole, totaling it...I'm still pissed off about sellin both of those cars just cuz a garbage human being hated em....damnit....

First, I'm no mechanic, much less a VW. mechanic. Many years ago I had a 67 bug and a friend of mine and me figured out how to replace the jugs on the engine in a day... with the help of manual. The most fun part was dropping the engine. We just got some concrete blocks to hold the engine, undid the bolts (many sheet metal), and he and I lifted the backend up and over. I drove it to work the next day. Lots of fun.

The 40 HP was about 1196 CC capacity. The 6 volt system was the monster from the black lagoon. I was into these little cars and the club in Sydney (AUS) quite a bit. The rally bugs had a part that bolted onto the outer end of the front suspension tubes back to the near where the floor pan at the front came out from the wheel wells at a corner where the pan went straight along under the doors. This was a factory part option at the time and a few of the guys I knew used it for rally events, dirt bush roads in mountains, forests etc where thing were under duress. Some guys used Porsche Super 90 motors and even transaxles. Some other variants could have been roughly related to Bugs, but only just !! Enjoyed the video but wished there was more info. Well done.

You guys are awesome. I’ve had a couple bugs, a 57 split oval, 59 oval, 64 and a 1970 auto stick with a 2100 cc engine that I switch from a 6volt battery to a 12 volt, lowered, air bags, and painted all grey with white doors. The 70 was my baby since it was a rare automatic. When I moved to Las Vegas in 1997 it was stolen and never seen again. My heart was broken that day

And as we can see, GMG is doing fine without Aaron, so Richard could have kept that 8 million for himself, so he won't make that mistake again! Fuck Aaron, richard all the way! A self made man who was a paramedic, a fire fighter and a cop, so that deserves alot of respect, and then he started his own printing busines and sold that and started GMG, so that deserves even more respect!

My parents bought a '63 bug brand new when I was 5 y.o. I learned to shift and drive when I was 11 y.o. I drove it all through high school, went on my first date, and a few other firsts in that car. Eventually, Cal-looked it, and more fun ensued. Eventually, I sold it to a neighbor kid so I could buy a new red '81 VW Scirocco, lowered with Gotti wheels. The neighbor totaled the bug 4 days later. I visited him in the hospital. Told him it's a good thing he's in the hospital or I'd put him in the hospital. I've owned other oldies, a 2013 Beetle, multiple Jettas, and Rabbits, but I miss my '63 bug the most.

@@thunderpuppy6719 ... the biggest problem with all the extra HP is the trans gearing is all wrong unless you build an engine that can handle over 7,000 rpm. That's about 30 mph in first gear, so you can see where this is going. IOW, 1st gear is almost useless with that much power because you will wind out the engine in less than 2 seconds. Final drive on these things is in the 4.26 range and what's needed is something in the 3.50 range with that low 1st gear.

in the late 70s early 80s myself and several of my freinds played around with Aircooled VWs and a freind of mine showed us a cool trick he knew fromthe 60s and 70s that was hacksawing the basket off a Shopping Buggy untill you were left with the 4 wheels ,handle , and the bottom frame rails and Shelf that became almost the perfect height for removing and Installing the Engines in Bugs ,Buses and most Aircooled VWs plus it gave you a great way to store the engine in a garage under a Workbench out of the way in a single car Garage to still get a car in it We didn’t Steal the Buggies ever but we did drive to the bigger Cities looking for abandoned ones one time my best freind saw one on the shoulder of a Highway and made me turn around to load it into the backseat of my Jeep you did sometimes need to shim the engine with a couple of 2X4s or whatever to match the cars height but with a few of your Buddies the motors could be bolted or unbolted by lifting the car high enough to get the engine out of the rear of the car it was fast and we had a system that we could swap a engine in under 2 hours and a 12 pack of Beer we all had small Workbenches in the Garages that gave us the Clearance to “park “ the extra assembled engines we had as back then we could still buy a used running Bug for a few hundred Dollars and even if the motor was weak. or leaky we could buy a Brazilian rebuild kit for $120.00 that had new Pistons ,Rings ,and all new Gaskets orfrh one expletive used to joke that those kits and parts were Junk and they may had been compared to Genuine GermanVW OEM parts but i know one engine that is still running in a vehicle 35 years later i’ve honestly lost track on how many Beetles ,Sand Rails , and Dune Buggies it’s been in over the years and the original Car has been long gone from Rust but people still call that motor my Engine !

It's a tv show with a budget that allows it. it's a shame they wasted an all original that would've just needed a buff and simple maintainece to turn it into a prime collector car. I like the way it turned out but it's still a shame

Front Suspension: Airkewld, USA, AZ, "Ultimate Beam", looks to me 4" narrowed, no shock towers (+ the 17" Wheels) Gearbox: not sure, might be a Rancho "Type1-Pro", USA, CA Motor/Engine: they did not say, but I'd wager from CB Performance, Turnkey crate 2276?; also USA, CA Exhaust: looks like a Vintage-Speed SST, 200hp kit. There needs to be a competitively priced suspension package for the air cooled vw world that helps these cars handle well. Trailing arms up front is no good over stock power around a corner. These cars need an easy bolt on front a arm and pan reinforcing kit. With 200hp and suspension that’s good enough to control the wheels without excessive bumpsteer, these cars will chase down “proper” sports cars. A proam or fd drift beetle would be a game changer.

Russell Krue ... If you know where to look and what to start with it makes a major difference. Nothing wrong with the stock front suspension that a little lowering and a bigger sway bar wont fix. Karman Gia front spindles will get you front disc brakes, which will accept type 3 front calipers. (almost 50% more pad area) All stock parts so cheap. If you start with a 68 (or newer) bug you will have IRS out back and the right camber. Not sure who makes a rear sway bar but that would finish things up. You can also lower a bug a few inches by using low profile tires and save a bunch of work elsewhere while retaining all stock parts for reliability. I mean, who is going to drive a bug over 100 mph where a slam-dunk makes a difference?

rupe53 - I would agree with you if I was interested in a street driven lightweight car using stock parts. I remember seeing a heavily modified kafer cup car type 1 (180+hp type 4, can’t remember if it was a super) vs a 964 Rs and the beetle had a faster lap time. Air cooled 911s have an 89” wheelbase while a type 1 beetles wb is 94”. It’s just the front trailing arms have a difficult time controlling camber while in a corner while under load. It’s a robust design...just not for track work. 924/944 rear trailing arms bolt into an irs pan with custom spring plates and they’ve got great brakes and the ebrakes are usable.

@@Russell_and_Rosko ... would agree that one can engineer around all sorts of things but I was talking the biggest bang for the buck.... using stock parts. Most people don't realize you can dial in a little more camber with the ball joint front end if needed. You can also utilize the "adjust-a-drop" modification to lower things while keeping the same spring rate. Wish someone made that for the rear.

This would have been impressive 3 days ago. Two days ago I stumbled across the ultimate sleeper. Aside from two rollcage struts low in the back side windows it looks like a stock Beetle. They shoehorned a Subaru boxer 4, producing 527hp at the rear wheel in there.

Back in the 70s and 80s the Cal Custom was king. For those that think this bug was destroyed then go get some old copies of Hot VW and Dune Buggies. I left my 65 stock but installed a 1906 out of an old sand rail. I did keep the bone stock engine though. My question on this build is, what were the gets in the new transaxle? The stock one was a 4:37 and it was pretty good with newer HP engines but I always thought a higher gear would be a lot better.

jac mwo - a 200hp motor will run you $10k Then you need the transmission and axles to handle that power and those are another $4-6 depending on if you want to lift the front wheels or not. Check out the CB Performance KZread channel. My engine is the all black one that makes 181hp. I have my doubts that this motor as installed in the car makes 200hp...
