This is a magnificent version. The clarinettist is at the top of his game, and through the effort and the complexities of such a demanding piece is definitely enjoying the music!

My favourite version, from Dudley Moore and Michael Tilson-Thomas’ series, concerto. Aired in the 90s, it actually opened my mind to classical music from electronic music for the first time, and has stayed with me ever since.

I remember Stoltzman and Dudley played a duet together on that episode. I think it was either Amazing Grace or Danny Boy. On the coda Dudley reharmonised with some descending gospel type chords. Stoltzman just said “Oh Dudley, that’s marvellous..” I was 15 years old and right at that very moment, I wanted to play music for the rest of my life.

he plays double lip. It gives him a bigger dynamic range and greater flexibility than single. He was a student of my teacher Kalmen Opperman who also played double lip.

the man that started that stupid clarinet dancing that 99 percent of the kids today copy..all form,,,no substance,,save all that wasted energy dancing and jumping around and put it into the music

I would never say anything bad about Stoltzman. I'm glad he's playing today. His sound at his peak was special, full of substance and form, emotional, delicate, sweet and aggressive. He still retains a certain magic. I think Martin Frost is more to blame for the dance
