“You will always be my friend” hits even harder knowing Gyatso was very close with both Roku and Aang. I can only imagine how happy he was to learn Aang was the next Avatar. “Some friendships are so strong they can even transcend lifetimes”

Oh man… Aang going HAM on the sandbenders is something I hope they keep… that and Sokka drinking the cactus juice. “Who lit Toph on fire?!” 🤣🤣🤣
This scene really breaks my heart. It shows that Aang, despite being the avatar, is still a child, a child with the whole weight of the world on his shoulders. Aang is 12 years old, and he just saw something that no 12 year old child should ever see, let alone witness: the dead corpse of one of his loved ones seen right in front of him, and the fact that he was taken from this world in a VERY painful way.
I teared up a little bit at this scene. Honestly, I like how the live action version started with Aang’s life at the temple and his friendship with Gyatso. It makes it more impactful and far more tragic especially when we See Gyatso’s death. It carries far more weight than seeing Aang’s life in a flashback.

@iamart8751

Based on the story the show is telling, it makes more sense to remove the Fire Nation bodies. Aang's journey is about learning that diplomacy will not always work. If there were dead bodies around Gyatso, it would devalue the lesson he's about to learn. And it might make him believe that fighting back won't work either, as you'd still end up dying anyway. The issue is that you're approaching this from the same perspective you had when you watched the cartoon.

What really made the live action version more impactful was that the show actually started with Aang’s life 100 years ago and giving us a glimpse of his relationship with his teacher and friend making it all the more painful when Aang returns to his home in the present day. Gyatso was like Aang's father since he took care of him because he knew Aang was the avatar and his parents due to air nomad traditions they wouldn't have attachments since they were moving to temples, and Gyatso taught him everything Aang knew. I don't think Gyatso treated Roku the same way he treated Aang, Roku was his friend, Aang was his student and adopted child.
What strikes me in both versions is that Aang is a twelve-year-old boy who’s lost almost everything of the world he knew. Even with all the power he has, he’s still a sweet boy whose heart has been terribly broken. And yet, because of the love from two other kids and the memory of one who was practically a father figure, he pulled back from the brink. Aang is strong.
This version is more emotional 😭

Katara: What happened? Sokka: He found out firebenders killed Gyatso! Katara: Oh no! It's his Avatar Spirit! He must have triggered it! I'm going to try and calm him down! Sokka: Well, do it! Before he blows us off the mountain! Katara: Aang! I know you're upset and I know how hard it is to lose the people you love. I went through the same thing when I lost my mom. Monk Gyatso and the other airbenders may be gone, but you still have a family. Sokka and I! We're your family now! (Aang snaps out of the Avatar State and descends back down to the ground) Sokka: Katara and I aren't going to let anything happen to you. Promise. Aang: (sad and tired) I’m sorry. Katara: It's okay. It wasn't your fault. Aang: But you were right. And if the firebenders found this temple, that means they found the other ones, too. I really am the last airbender.

@@6-dpegasus425I know the whole 'flying kites' thing bothers people. But it actually was a good concept to have a light and dark side within the Avatar. The Avatar is the bridge between the worlds but he/she is very much still Human. And Humans are prone to committing great atrocities when they allow the dark side to take over. Imagine how often the Avatar would be tempted to completely eviscerate someone for either not cooperating or causing extreme harm like what Sozin did. When a young boy, with the power of God within him, sees his homeland destroyed and his people murdered. Don't you think he would be slightly tempted to get revenge by slaughtering those who did it? The Avatar must keep balance but they can't if they lose balance within themselves. Stray too much to either side and they fall into chaos; if the Avatar is in chaos then the world is in chaos.

@TimberlakeTigerGirl
3 ай бұрын
But wouldn't having the Avatar State be triggered by rage mean he did in fact trigger a darker side of being the Avatar? Meaning if the Avatar got pissed off enough, he could become a force of destruction and kill rather than save? I think I remember a passage from the Yangchen novel that mentioned a Avatar that was so done with humanities bs. That he basically didn't bother doing his duty and let a lot of people suffer from whatever was effecting them. He basically ignored humanity and spent most of his time with the spirits instead. If you ask me, that's the closest we have gotten to an actual evil Avatar (Unavaatu not withstanding). I mean being apathetic is one thing but imagine if that Avatar actually wanted to wipe out humanity. The Avatar may have great power but they are still human. Meaning the Avatar is just as susceptible to darker emotions as any other human.
my eyes got watery because its soooooo sad 😢
Its ok, but the animated scene is way stronger with Katara struggling to reach him proving her compromise with Aang to stick by his side no matter what...and Katara's touch which ultimately helps Aang , who gives her the most menacing look eyes glowing, snap out of the almighty uncontrolled Avatar state. Despite changes like this one, I hope they make book 2 and 3.
I wouldn't say Aang turned dark. He was just heartbroken that he wasn't there to protect Gyatso or the other Air Nomads, and it triggered the Avatar State.

@@logicplague2077You make it sound so simple. Yangchen said it best; this isn't about what Aang needs. This is about the world and the lives of millions of people being at stake. As the Avatar, you have to be prepared to make sacrifices, even if your own principles, if it means preventing massacres and restoring balance. The energy bending thing could of worked out better if they had brought it up sooner and had Aang try to master it and made the stakes clear. But if it wasn't an option, I don't see any other way to stop Ozai without using lethal force. Men who are willing to commit genocide with no hesitation or remorse cannot be reasoned with and are too dangerous to be kept alive. The only other option besides outright killing him, and again with no energy bending, would be to cripple/mutilate Ozai. Like cut off his arms and legs so he couldn't bend anymore. Or break his neck leaving him paralyzed from the neck down; essentially turning him into a vegetable. Personally, I think outright killing Ozai would actually be more merciful than leaving Ozai alive in a broken body.
