A4 LNER Line up at York all whistling with 60009 on mainline
Ben Collier's video sequence of 'The line up' at York Railway Museum on Saturday 05.07.08 (costing £32.50 per person to attend) of '4' A4's after 60007 had just arrived from London with it's train and later 60009 was to head north from York to Edinburgh with the train but unfortunately it failed at Tyne Yard before Newcastle and had to carry on diesel hauled before 60007 was to be sent up Sunday morning light engine to join the diesel hauled train for the return at Tyne Yard.
This is the first time for years and years that all the A4's lined up and the first time Mallard has emerged out the museum for over 20 years.
Witness them all whistling as 60009 works past them on the mainline as it heads north. Of course the legendary Mallard in the foreground wasn't whistling but the spectacle was defining and spine tingling Chime Whistles galore! Saturday 05.07.08

Ahh, Sir Nigel Gresley.
Brilliant! Loved the Engine's 'talking' towards the end there!
60009: “I’m steaming out” Sir Nigel Gresley: “I salute you brother!” Bittern: “Cheerio mate!” Mallard: *•____•*
Absolutely amazing would have loved to be there, outstanding whistles. Long Live The A4 Pacific.
This is still my favourite ever video on KZread. Guaranteed to make me cry with joy every time.
I know. It's all I wanted them to do when attending the photo shoot and never thought they would all Whistle with each other. Cheers, Ben.

I hope mallard is in steam for her 100th anniversary of her world record run it would be great to see but sadly i think that she will be just sitting there not moving because they dont want to ruin her original state which i can understand :(. It is great to see some of the other A4's in steam they are my favorite class of loco

They dragged her out of retirement in 1988 for the fiftieth anniversary of the record run, and she ran almost in original condition. I'm sure she COULD be put back into working order just to get a few miles on her. And surely electronic systems could be mounted in the support coach so as 4468's originality would remain.

Excellent job as well, she looked immaculate well done to you and everyone (as I take it you were cleaning too) for way it's was turned out like the other A4's in true splender. Great job, it was all worth it! An iconic moment in history! Cheers.
Even though I wasn't there it still brought a lump to the throat and a tear to the eye! Thanks for putting this on youtube. I hope that they repeat the event next year (I hear it has been mentioned).
Absolutely Fantastic! I saw 60009 come through Northallerton yesterday, beautiful she was, that last scene with all whistling at 60009 as she leaves York, brough a tear to my eye.
love it
Did mallard whistle too ? Edit: Never mind I read the description and I saw, Mallard was probably glad to be with her brother's and sister's during this Mallard: You guys are lucky to be in working condition -_- Union of south africa: Don’t worry one day you will run again, not sure when but one day Sir Nigel: She is right, you will one day be given another chance to be in working order for now they just need to figure out how much it will cost and what parts you need Bittern: their both right, someday you will be able to in working condition like us and maybe be they’ll have you run at 90mph like I did on the 75th anniversary Mallard: I hope so, and I hope you guys are right too

It’s kinda sad that 60009 has now joined mallard in mainline unemployment, probably forever
I think the woman speaking at the end of the whistles summed it up - "Bloody BRILLIANT!" Thanks for putting this clip on.
It did with me and all the haires on my neck were stood up. Just awesome! Thanks.
I love this video! Thank you so much for posting!
Great Clip!! Must have been amazing to see mallard - she is a beautiful loco!!
now then this so bloody brilliant if could l give it 8 stars so good thanks.
That Was Brilliant, An Amazing Moment In Time.
Oh that would be brilliant if repeated. Thanks it made me tingle as the sound was deafining and powerfull, like the A4's were making their presence really known to each other. Glad you like it, thanks. Ben.
Absolutley brilliant, the best video on you tube.
Fantastic Glad you got this on camera. I couldn't make it to the event :-( due to various things.NRM hats off to you guys for pulling this off. Cheers
now this is so brilliant thanks for this video thank you
just magical. thanks for posting
Awesome, went to see bittern yesterday on her return from lincoln. Well worth the 2hr trip
This is a fantastic exhibition!
Great vid and sound quality for something on YT for this long.
well that fantastic to see al that! absolutely amazing
Spine-tingling indeed. Great pics. *envy* :-)
We could hear that occasionally from our house in York, when an A4 would be on a special. Lovely sound.
Very very good video! The A4's look stunning as usual. Seems a bit sad though that the other three were in steam and Mallard is just stood there lifeless and cold. The NRM really do need to restore her to mainline condition. I was up at NRM on sunday and they said that once they finished the Flying scotsman they could possibly restore Mallard if they had enough money. Lets hope they do it!!
Yeah totally agree, that would have been the icing on the cake. Thanks, glad you like it. Ben.
I love the part from 1:57 until the end!
I hear you :), Dwight and Dominion may be British steam locomotives, but I view them as a Gift to America, it would be so nice for me to go on holiday, look around a railway museum and look at a British spectacle and think to myself, I feel honoured that the American's love this type of locomotive. For example too, I also love Big Boy locomotives, and Pennsylvania K4 pacifics they are beautiful :)
Beautiful Trains....what a treat !!!

I can't believe the mallard isn't going to be steamed. Especially since their celebrating her 75th anniversary. I mean... Dangit. And what would be truly amazing is like on her hundredth they go and try to beat it!
Simply magnificent!
Hi there. The A4's were the main engines to have chime whistles but Oliver Cromwell which you heard is fitted with one as well. This being the Brit class as Britania also has the same whistle. As well as the week sounding LNER Whistle that Tornado has which sounds the same as Green Arrow's watery whistle, Tornado is also fitted with a chime Whistle but you can't beat the classic A4 sound. Glad you like the video. Cheers, Ben Collier.

Excellent video, wish I'd been there. Perhaps there'll be a next time.
nice to see the all together Ive never seen bittern but have seen all the others at somtimes in my life see mine
These engines are amazing. And as for all the people who keep saying bring Dwight D Eisenhower and Dominion of Canada back need to grow up. They make people in North America happy and proud. I had never even heard of an A4 until I went to the museum where Dwight is kept and I was so amazed at. Now, my ultimate favorite train is the A4 Pacific. It's what got me into railways and model trains.
Sir Nigel Gresley has the best sounding whistle in my opinion.

The most beautiful steam engine sound EVER.
COOL!!!!! 4 A4's lined up and whistling, shame Mallard couldn't be steamed up for this, but at least 3 of them were.
WOW thats just made me cry i wish i was there
Bet it was a superb sight from the train. Any video's welcome from No. 9's train as they were passing. Good stuff!

I have never before noticed the difference in bodywork at the front between Mallard and the others.
i wish mallard was in steam awsome video
good video of the 40th anniversary malard and whistling A++++++++++++
Awesome.
Yes a definate lump in thraot and tear in eye moment there.......
Mallard made the trip to Doncaster for the workshop's 150th anniversary many years ago - she has ventured outside occasionally!
Oh, look, they both came back :-)
Quality Wish i had been there
I was there! Great day it was, too bad about the weather though...
If only the Dwight D. Eisenhower was there, then all 6 A4's left in the world would be in one spot!!
Hi. There is of course Mallard there and No.9 may be there as that's booked to leave on Friday if fixed. No. 7 left yesterday back to Grosmont and Bittern left with train back down to London on Sunday. Ben.
I believe 60008 and 4489 have been wonderfully repainted over here, although it would be nice for one of them to stay here, but i read in Steam Railway someone vowed to try and purchase 60008, as for Mallard, i would like to see her in steam again, and if Bittern could reach 100mph on the way back to the cross, Brilliant!!!
Imagine if Spencer showed up to hang out with his siblings, his view on steam engines of his own kind would be forever changed
lovely locos. im gonna see nigel gresely on 21st december at kings cross
I went to york before but I did not see the 60009,60007,60019 and 4468. I love the ending to this. did you know that the 60019 bittern is know blue 4492 Dominion of new zealand.
I agree, and I'm worried that if she gets a paint job here before returning to North America, that she might get worn down again... It is not the way to treat a steaming spectacle.
After watching this the Leslie rs5t is still the king of train horns
Such a shame that mallard herself isn’t in operation and probably won’t ever be again. Hopefully they will get her operational for her 100th anniversary of her record in 2038!
"SILENCE!!!" snapped The Fat Controller.
how come gresley & mallard did not speek with there wistels as the one passing was and the other 2 sittin and sokin did sound there wistels randomly + i have seen the mallard and i regret not goin to see em all
This will be five years ago tommorrow
Thanks. Glad you like it. Shame the sun went in as No. 9 approached but we can't have everything I spose!
2:42 horn the mallard train steam age roblox! XD
Bittern sounded a bit rusty, but beautiful to see the four together ashame about the other two being abroad
such a great vid. Fantastic. Me and my dad are building a British theme display and we just picked up 60012 and 60013. Mallard is on the list and picking up Evening star in a week or so. BUt i wish i was there for this.... Where in Canada is one of these i saw someone mention?

I disagree. The Union of South Africa is the best if the A4's and is the last operational today
absolutely beautiful! Are all the locos operable?
@aidenarroyo8561
2 жыл бұрын
As of now, only 4468 Mallard and Dwight D. Eishenhower are inoperable. 60009 Union of South Africa and 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley, as well as 60020 Bittern and 60029 Dominion of Canada are the only operating A4s of the surviving 6. 60009 was just pulled off mainline use in 2020 for restoration and possible preservation, the answer is unknown. 60007 is leaving restoration in 1 month and will be used for hauling the Cathedral Express and Scarborough Flyer just like 60163 Tornado. 60020 Bittern is undergoing maintenance and just like 60009, she may be put into preservation. By the end of 2021, only 60007 and 60009 should be the only operating A4 Pacific's in the world. It's crazy to think they are almost 100 years old.
Dominion of Canada resides in Canada, and Dwight.D.Eisenhower resides in The U.S.A
Great video. Isn't it about time mallard was steaming again?
2:03 is the same whistle from the fast and fizzle boxes

@2509SilverLink yes I agree we have 3 working A4s and one on static display we have plenty their are some classes that are no longer with us sadly!!?!
@OceansApprentice Mallard doesn't whistle because he (or she, i don't know, i'm spanish) was turned off, so he/she hadn't steam to blow the whistle.
whoa~~
