Dear Dean Z: Thank you so much for this insightful video. It would be great if you could do an episode on writing a successful letter of continued interest. All of your videos have been invaluable during the application process, so thank you!

That was an exceptionally high-quality, thoughtful, transparent, and overall well-done video. All of your videos have been amazing, but the tone and care that you took with this video are bar none. Thank you for all that you do for law school applicants everywhere! I will be sharing this widely with my students.

I was waitlisted at a certain T3 that stated if you were to remain on the WL it was essentially saying you would 100% accept an offer. They also refused to provide financial aid info at the time of an offer and expected an answer within 24 hours. I withdrew because I thought it was predatory and an abuse of power. It's sad more schools don't take the approach that Dean Z does.

This video is fittingly appearing after I was part of the recent Michigan waitlist wave. While I am certainly sad to not have been admitted, I also recognize that a waitlist offer is an honor in and of itself and am grateful to still be in the running to some degree! Thank you as always for these videos, Dean Z. They really help remove some of the mystery and guesswork from the admissions process (which I believe is where a lot of the anxiety comes from!)

As a first gen law school applicant, it is difficult to overstate how helpful these videos have been. It is a huge testament to Michigan Law that Dean Z is running the show over there!

Does all of this go for the LSA, as well? Just got waitlisted at the LSA and it hurts, honestly! But I’m thankful that it’s not a rejection. Always thankful.

I can’t speak with any authority about the undergrad process, I’m sorry to say. But I *can* say it’s really important that you not let a waitlist decision by a school define you or make you feel in any way unworthy! The school makes decisions based on their internal goals and their overall pool, and it is certainly the case that a selective school just does not, by definition, have room for all the great applicants they have.

Can applicants request an informal interview to make a positive impression if they're lacking in diff areas?

Do we have to email back "affirming" a waitlist (as though it's an offer?) I've gotten a few waitlists that don't sound like offers at all, just "hey, you're on our waitlist."

  • @umichlaw

Every school has a different process. At Michigan, we ask that people explicitly affirm that they want to participate, but I know many schools don’t do that.

Just major in film studies for an easy 4.0 and it's easy to get into law school. What, you studied chemical engineering and didn't get an inflated GPA? Too bad.

As somebody who is majoring in engineering, I don’t think it’s fair to say film studies is easy at all. Also you need to do well on the LSAT in order to be competitive.

Most law schools will give weight to STEM degrees and other degree programs that have exceptional rigor.
