What I love about Dean Z, is that she doesn’t give off that plastic smell that other people do when they are coming from top schools. I’m from poor farm country, I like dirt, I love canals, I love almond blossoms and allergies. I don’t wanna go to trust fund land, but Dean Z gives me hope of real people existing in those top schools.

Thanks for the video. Very informative! I want to ask a question about GPA. I am a CS student from a university in Taiwan with a GPA around 3.7(subject to change since I am still taking courses.) I heard about that US law schools don’t really take GPA from universities outside US or Canada into consideration. Is that a common practice or a variable discretion? If it really goes that way, how would the metric of LSAT/GPA be for foreign students? Thanks a lot! BTW hope that there could be a video talking about adopting GRE for admission!!

How do you consider students who have an average LSAC UGPA (like in the 3.4-3.6 range) but a high overall GPA? For example, a student with a few failing grades where classes were retaken and thus the failing grade is not calculate into their institutional GPA, or a student who failed a few classes and took time off before returning to school later in life and graduating with latin honors?

This is a great, but complicated, question! The very short answer is that the GPA we use for calculating our data is the LSAC cumulative GPA, and therefore, as a piece of data, that is the one that carries the most weight. The less-short answer is that there are a whole lot of reasons why GPAs are low, and I would encourage very strongly to talk about that in an addendum to your application. But-there is a much longer answer that I’d like to give, and so you have inspired me to do an episode on this.

If I get an offer from one Law school then can I wait for the offer of the other law school without accepting the offer of the first one and keeping it in wait as an International Student?

This may sound dumb but UGPA is overall college GPA not the LSAC gpa right?

It’s the cumulative GPA across ALL undergrad institutions you’ve attended, as calculated by LSAC.

Interesting focus, but isn’t some of the importance of medians (vs. means) lost given that 25th percentiles are also reported? Meaning I assume there is a lesser penalty to law schools for admitting someone just below a median vs. very far below it.

Not really, no-traditionally, the only thing that the various rankings outfits have taken into account is the median, even though the 25th percentile is also an available bit of data.

i don’t quite understand the last point about preventive vs preventative… perhaps i missed it completely.

Is the major GPA, as opposed to the overall GPA, given any special weight/consideration? Also, love these videos and your sense of humor! Please keep them coming. :)

I like preventative. "Preventive" just doesn't sound as good. Point about the extra syllable is well-taken, though.

when they have thousands of below median (both UGPA & LSAT) I highly doubt they're going to read every single one of them and say "yeah, they can definitely "do the work" when they already use lsat/gpa as the only metric to decide whether you will succeed in law school. I commend Dean Z's kind words, but thats all they are-just kind words. T15's are the way they are because they want to keep their rankings-so they only admit high scores. period. thats why you always hear them say "yeah, we dont have a min score requirement" yet, why are majority of your admits 169+? its nonsense. T15s and USNWRs have rigged the game so bad. This is a great LSAT scenario: see if you can spot dean Z's NA and SA=with all this in mind, youre applying with a GPA of 3.8 from Yale and have an 179 LSAT.
