I’m the video editor for CZsWorld and I watched Hereditary for the first time when doing our project. It was honestly the scariest movie I’ve seen as an adult. I’m curious to see Midsommar now…

Hey, thanks for checking out the vid. Yeah Hereditary is terrifying, although I personally wasn't that scared. But then I was watching it with an analytical eye for our project and maybe that pulled me out of it a little. I'd love to know what you think of Midsommar if you do check it out because I found that one much harder to watch.

I’ve never been in a theater that was as quiet as Hereditary. Everyone was on the edge of their seat the entire movie, just frozen with tension. I didn’t hear food bags, muttering, coughing, nothing. I found myself barely breathing, too, so even that sound was missing. Only during the big climax did people start making noise, and then it was a lot of gasping and “Holy shit!” Very memorable viewing experience in addition to the quality of the movie itself.

I think to date this is still the brightest horror movie in #HorrorHistory. Most if not all horror movies take place at/during dawn or night, but midsommar is during bright as Hell DAY. Plus this movie is the real remake we needed of my favorite horror classic,#TheWickerMan. Sure beats the wicker man from 2006 by a long shot. I saw Hereditary at the theater and at a late showing. When it was over and I walked out into the darkness of the parking lot, I was terrified. It left such an impression on me I couldn’t sleep thinking about it all. It’s a great film and I love how different it is from the typical horror films. Love your content and I’ll be subscribing.

People say they were shocked at where hereditary headed at the end… Man.. I remember going to the theater alone for midsommar opening night having only seen a little teaser for it and boy was I in for a damn experience. I remember looking back at some of the other people in theater and the reactions were priceless. People thought they were tripping because of the background visuals

I also prefer Hereditary. I can appreciate the work that went into Midsommar but I found it hard to watch
I think the difference between cult and culture is that the paimon cult lives secretly within a larger community whereas the people of Midsommar ARE the larger community - they live openly in their beliefs - there is no large social authority to condemn or even question their way of life. The culture becomes a larger more fulfilled version of a cult

Meow 😆 I really love that you went in depth of who Aster was and how he was inspired and how he created these masterpieces. Both these films blew me away. They were perfect. I too had to decompress from them but that’s a good thing. I recommended these films to others but they hated it or didn’t bother to finish watching them. They just didn’t connect to them which I get and that’s okay. But these films which I own and have watched repeatedly really moved me. You’re explanation and point of view is great. Thank you. I’m very excited to see what other projects he’s working on. I would like to know what you think of Mother from Darren Aronofsky. That movie was also a breath of fresh air and chaotic.

That was an interesting video. I love both of these movies, it's rare to come across horror classics these days but I think they both fit this description. I also think these are the movies that Shyamalan spends his entire career trying to make, with very mixed results. That's not a slight on Shyamalan, I love Sixth Sense and the Eastrail trilogy but he misses as often as he hits and Midsommar in particular has a very Shyamalan feel to it. I prefer straight reviews to analysis but enjoyed this video a lot nonetheless, thanks for that.

Hereditary, at the beginning, something reminded me of Rosemary's baby and saw "the golden amulet" everywhere, still one of my favourite films though. Midsommar, paid attention to details since the beginning and certain "paintings" spoiled the plot. Went to watch it again anyway. I'll buy the ticket/s to Aster's third film without any doubt.

@@whatthehorror I would strongly advice against watching it. I've been a horror fan for 37 years, but that film left me with an ever need to wash it off my mind. I love Ari Aster, but that one was like "what in the living f*ck was this guy thinking?" I've read all explanations of it online to try to process it away, but nope, didn't work. 😄
And THANK YOU for noticing that we are supposed to wonder whether Annie is responsible for what is happening. This is another example of Aster exploring theoretically the boundaries between self and other, individual vs community, consciousness vs unconsciousness, and fate vs choice.

It's incredibly unsettling but for some reason the sound effects make me laugh.
It's crazy how in hereditary the cult was looking for a male host and midsommar the cult was looking for a female host God I can't wait to see what this director makes next
These movies are masterpieces. I watch them on fucking repeat. They both share a color scheme, I have recently noticed. Blue, yellow, orange, and red figure heavily in both films. Also, it should be noted that a B-story of Midsommar is that PhD students are fucking douchebags lol. I should know because I am one. Also, I feel like you're missing one point: Dani actually BECOMES Terri at the end of the film. We catch her manic smile right before the credits roll, thereby completing her transformation from winter (depression) to summer (mania). One of the things I think Ari is excellent at is breaking down the dichotomy between self and other, individuality and community. Both films are great at this. One of the reasons I think he refrains from calling Horga a cult and instead calls them a family is that it drives home the dichotomy itself: where do I end and where does the other begin? Where is the locus of control? In Hereditary, this is mainly represented by Annie's refrain that no one acounts for their own actions, no one takes responsibility (but this includes herself, as Peter points out). It is also represented by the cult ultimately being in control. In Midsommar, the main scene showing this dichotomy is the one directly after Dani witnesses Christian cheating on her (though he did not choose to do this). She is crying, and the group of women around her match the pitch of her cries the way they do normally at any of the other ceremonies.

I still feel after listening to you and CZs videos. I do think the "family" having something to do with Dani's family death because I feel if she didnt have that trauma i dont think she would have gone and since Pelle met Dani I feel he knew shed be best to join his family. I also saw a comment on CZs video that they believe Dani and her sister were actually born into the family but her parents took them away hence why the leader greets her with "welcome home" plus her accumating so easily. Very interesting take as well. Hence why Pelle wanted her to return.

I find myself in a bit of a weird camp, where my wife and I both really liked Hereditary but weren't at all impressed by Midsommar. Could be because we live close to Sweden, and so found some of the cultural and cult-themed scenes kind of jarring (had a Swedish friend watch the movie later and told us he thought it was dumb on multiple levels), or the fact that certain character actions and events struck us as very predictable.

hereditary is a movie that i’d love to watch again, but one that i have no need to, and probably couldn’t handle seeing it again. due to how much charlie reminds me of my younger sister, and how realistic the circumstance is that lead to her death (the car window, not the drugged brother) it just made me walk away from the screen for a few minutes. i still skip through any clip of it in videos.

It can be so difficult when a film hits a personal nerve.
One of the best horror movies for me.....The mythological aspect is the main attraction.
For anyone who didnt know Disappointment Blvd came out as Beau is Afraid
Got sent here from some other channel that I found by accident.
The thing with Ari Aster is that he sees everything thru a horror lens. He thinks that's normal. I watched one of his short movies w/Bonnie Bedelia...it's described as a warm tale of a Mother's Love. (Now go watch it.) EVERYTHING to the rest of us is kinda horrifying and I think that's the point. Horror (or rather, the possibility of it) threads thru everything. I've been married 30yrs, but eventually...that love story is gonna turn sour cuz one of us gotta go some time; perhaps even together, if we're lucky. (Did I just say that out loud? Lucky? You get all that? That's the epitome of real life horror, right there...played thru the lens of some love song.)

Lars Von Trier's Antichrist also has the same creep factor as these movies. My favorite saying in the movie is "Nature is Satan's church".
While I loved both of these movies, Midsommar hits closer to home. The way the guys treat Dani as a nuisance while she's trying her hardest to keep it together, the disaffected boyfriend you've been chained to because it's comfortable, the insane amount of gaslighting... like forget the gore, the interpersonal relationships were impeccably written and absolutely terrifying.
Gotta say, imo…Hereditary trumps Midsommer. Hereditary, I “felt”. Truly disturbed me (it helped that I really understood the demonology, least a bit, & caught many of the subtle, nasty implications that family was just screwed) Midsommer? Ehh… The lead actress was killing me w/her whining (yes, anyone would just be crippled w/the grief she’s endured-guess just the actress? Decent) And how it “seemed” as though the bf’s death was “justified” (admittedly maybe I took it off balance-distracted). Dude was completely coerced to cheat. Drugged even. Again, I can understand, maybe his death “feeling” justified was part of the tragedy of it all…let me see ur thoughts What the Horror- (Edit-shout out to CZworld for leading me to this channel & to What the Horror itself for the awesome content. Subbed! And I understand the “why” a bit more on Christian’s death seeming “justified”…that *is* 1 of the tragedies. As said, distracted-👍)

If Dani would have break up with Christian, there would have been much less interest for Pelle to take them in Sweden without the future Queen of May. Of course it could also have been another Queen instead of Dani... but my guess is that the movie would have been much less interesting!! :-) Edit : after seing (and totally hating, unfortunatelly...) "Beau Is Afraid", I'm not surprised to hear that Aster said he was done with horror... and it's a real shame. But with his 2 first movies (!!), he has succeed to reinvent the genre, giving us 2 classics which belongs to the greatest films ever, so big kudos to him!!

On 19 July, a record temperature of 40.3 °C (104.5 °F) was recorded and verified by the Met Office.
I believe that the Swedish friend actually staged the suicide/murder of Dani's parents and sister. He orchestrated the entire thing, because he wanted her for his own. Which kind of makes him like the grandmother.....
I didn't realize both movies were Ari movies. I guess I need to pay better attention to the credits! They're both great movies. I can see that he would be good working on other genres besides horror. But kind of like Kubrick when a story starts to delve so deeply into psychology there is an element of fear no matter what genre it is. I guess he would avoid supernatural themes? I like the teleprompter. To me it's obvious when someone is recording stream of consciousness. I'm not saying it's bad. But in order to turn out a lot of content and have that content be organized requires some sort of memory "prompting."
