A Zombie Extra’s First Day on Set - Key & Peele

Комедия

An extra on a zombie show gets a huge opportunity his first day on the job. (Contains strong language.)
About Key & Peele:
Key & Peele showcases the fearless wit of stars Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele as the duo takes on everything from "Gremlins 2" to systemic racism. With an array of sketches as wide-reaching as they are cringingly accurate, the pair has created a bevy of classic characters, including Wendell, the players of the East/West Bowl and President Obama's Anger Translator.

    This one is great; everyone think it is about them adding sound in posproduction therefore not caring about what the extra says, but, I think it is actually a commentary about hierarchy on TV shows sets; in particular, how extras are basically voiceless props in the eyes of the main cast, producers and director of the show.

  • @mrchung

    @mrchung

    Well it makes sense. You’re just there as a background character for a couple of seconds, maybe a minute or a whole scene if you’re lucky. Most of the time you’re not interacting with the main story, just chilling or being killed mostly. They’re not going to see you as a main actor cause you’re not doing as much work as one lmao. I dunno why you’re making this sound like a problem when the extras are just doing their job. What do you want, for them to be treated like the main cast on set?

    @@mrchung I agree that it's not a problem in terms of how people are treated (even the fact that there's lots of rejection is just the unfortunate reality of the industry). However, as far as artistic integrity goes, I believe good directors try to get the most out of every tool available to them. 2-3 seconds is enough to provoke a nuanced, unique feeling in the viewer. They may not have time to hear opinions from extras, but they certainly have time to work with them - that is, if they want to make the most of what actors can add to a scene.

    That seems to be necessary in the acting world. I remember an interview with a Belgian director who had a chance to make a movie in the States, and the first thing that he talked about was how the actors were all diva's and the most important thing in their own little world. Now, none of these actors were A or even B-listers, but C-listers. There were no big names in this movie, but all of them seemed to think they were as big as Eastwood, DeNiro and so on.

If you're a big name director like Nolan or Speilburg then you're the friggin' emperor of your set and everyone better step to your beat, but if you're some journeyman director doing an episode of a show then the main cast are the ones with the power because they're essential and you can be replaced with anyone.

Then there’s Gina, Kevin, and probably more characters. I don’t like it when media features an “ethnic cast” for the sake of ethnic casting but that is not the case with B99. If anything, the main crew accurately portray the diversity of races within New York City.

    Depends on how the zombiafication works. If all speech vocal parts of the brain are gone, it could be creepy like apes howling. Humans are fully capable of making many chimp/monkey sounds which might manifest if only the most primitive parts of the brain are functional. Otherwise if it is more of a mental disorder type of virus, there could be gibberish talk mixed with random noises, but in all cases I would expect horrible screaming and heavy breathing.

    It makes sense that they don't care what he says when the light is shined on him, because it's not like they're going to use that audio anyway. Both the fence sound and the zombie sounds are going to be from post. In fact when he suddenly points the rifle at the zombie there's no sound, that needs to change we need to add a loud "RATTLE RATTLE" to the rifle, and maybe a pump action shotgun racking sound as well.

    * They should care, because a zombie wouldn't be moving his lips to form words which would be really obvious to anyone watching the show. * Adding in phony sounds is stupid, even if most studios do it. It just encourages thoughtless bandwagon mentality. * Why would the gun rattle? There are no BBs inside it. * Why would an AR make a shotgun racking sound when it's not a shotgun? Even if it were, nobody who is trained in armed combat (or anybody who's ever used a gun) is going to be in obvious imminent danger, and THEN decide to chamber a round, losing previous seconds. That would be like waiting until you have to drop a deuce and then calling the utility company to have water turned on at the house.

    This is probably closer to reality than one would guess. They are overdubbing anyway and adding CGI and all that so it probably doesn't matter what he says or looks like.

    Better than that, much better! My overkill point was "he sounded like Beeker from the Muppets ya'll" I think I lost a rib. I might be eligible for an extra as zombie now.
