A huge thanks to Ashgood Porsche for letting me film and showing off these legendary boxsters.
www.ashgood.co.uk/
I've been a Porsche boxster fan for many years and I remember going to the Birmingham NEC motor show and spending many hours on the Porsche stand admiring the 986 Boxster S anniversary edition. Over the years I been lucky enough to test drive the 986, 987 and 718 models and hopefully in 2024 I will finish the group with the 981. My KZread channel currently has a drive video of the 987.1 boxster with a 5 speed manual and the 2.7L engine, and I also have walk around and start up videos of the 987 & 981 spyder.

What did I think of the cars
1999 Porsche Boxster 986 2.5 L Manual (9000 miles)
Completely blew me away this car, for some reason I didn't have high hopes for the 986, but I actually loved it. The highlight has to be the clarity and font style of the dashboard dials, they are perfect. Even the colour and font of the digital dials housed underneath the analogue dials had me drooling at the mouth.
I'm actually saving up for a boxster and i had pinned my budget on the 987.1 cars, but having experienced a a great example of the 986, it's definitely got me thinking. Honestly if you can cope with the softer lines there is nothing not to like here.
2010 Porsche Boxster 987 3.4 L Manual (45000 miles)
Probably my favourite generation in terms of what you get for your hard earned money.
This car was really easy to get in and out off, for some reason the door entry point with the roof down seems bigger than the others. The seating position to the pedals is perfect, not of set like the 718. A simplistic interior design that focuses your attention to the driving experience, pedals, dials and gearstick.
2012 Porsche Boxster 981 3.4 L Manual (75000 miles)
If you have the money and you are looking for a Porsche Boxster, the 981 should definitely be on your list. You sit low in the cabin, the build quality is excellent and the noise from the sports exhaust in unmatched by any other generation. My only criticism is that the cockpit is so good, and so modern that you lose a little bit of the bare bones experience that the 986 and 987 offer. Regardless of that, if you have the money this is one fine convertible and probably the best in my opinion.
2016 Porsche Boxster 718 2.0 L PDK (41000 miles)
I have driven the 2.0 L turbo with a PDK gearbox and I can report that it's a great experience, super rapid and covers ground effortlessly, don't be put off. There doesn't seem to be a huge change between the 981 and the 718 interior, probably the least between generations, but in some ways that's a good thing. The dial fonts are nice and big, second behind the 986 in my opinion, but with the added digital display for monitoring key functions like tyre pressure, fuel and turbo pressure. A lovely modern take on the boxster, still excellent just doesn't sound as good as the others, i appreciate the 4.0 L 718 improves this while driving, but not stationary due to the soft limiter.
Price summary Feb 2024
986 - clean example £6500 - £9000 (low mileage enthusiast cars £15k +)
987 - clean example £8000 - £10,000 (low mileage enthusiast cars £18k +)
981 - clean example £20,000 - £30,000 (low mileage enthusiast cars £35k +)
718 - clean example £30,000 - £40,000
Many of the boxster generations and engines are ULEZ compliant, but i would check on the dealer website for confirmation. ULEZ is a government scheme to tax cars that enter an ultra low emission zone within the close proximity to London, well within a 25 mile radius it would seem.

I spent a while thinking about how to film this video, even today im thinking i could have filmed from different angles. I also wished i used the mic wind protector, but on the day it didn't seem that windy, I keep on learning. Thanks again keep watching.

Very nice I’m should you can offer lots of advice across all 3 generations. I don’t personally have a problem with the 718, in most scenarios it’s a better car, and you could even argue the power delivery of the turbo charged engines in more useable in most driving situations. The flat six and hydraulic steering is hard to beat though.

Hi Spencer great to hear from you and interesting what you say about your seats. It's a really hard decision to make, buying a porsche boxster, doesn't matter if your a first time buyer or looking for one of the newer generations. I was blown away at how nice the 986 was, it feels a tiny car from inside the cockpit and outside looking in. The three main instrument dials are my favourite, the fonts are nice to look at and massive, plus the colour of the fonts in the digital displays is really nice. My mates 987.1 5 speed manual with the 2.7 engine, sounds great, is plenty fast enough and revs really nicely, sounds awesome too. The 981

Thanks for the video. Interesting to see all the cars in one go. Slight downside is that your weight, power and production numbers are all over the place. You're quoting BHP for some cars, PS for others. Re weights, the problem is probably a mix of DIN and EU, the latter adding a notional 70kg for driver and luggage. The 981 is lighter than the 718, for instance. Re production numbers, part of the problem is that the 718 isn't a "generation" of its own, it's a facelifted 981. But generally, they built a lot of 981 and 982 (982 being the internal code for the 718). They also built a lot of 987.1. The rarest by far is the 987.2. Far fewer of those than any other generation because of the timing of the launch just after the world financial crisis and during a global recession. 718 and 981, if you want to put it that way, were far bigger sellers roughly 3x times the volume each versus the 987.2.
