A Yogurt Container Float Valve by B A Kratky

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

A low pressure float valve was built by placing 2 blocks of extruded polystyrene in a recycled 32 oz plastic yogurt container. A 1.5 inch square of 1/4-inch-thick neoprene foam was attached to the upper block. It sealed off a water flow from a 1/4-inch tubing connector which served as a nozzle. Water presure should not exceed 5 ft of head pressure. Materials for each float valve cost only about $1.
Possible uses for these devices include to automatically water plants in containers (without holes) • Automatic Watering of ... or beds • Automatically Sub-Irri... of growing medium and maintain nutrient solution levels in hydroponic tanks • Growing Peppers and To... .
Future videos will demonstrate how these float valves can be used to automatically water plants in regular nursery pots (with holes in the bottom) containing growing medium and plants growing in the soil such as trees.

This type of presentation almost seems better than a scientific paper. Everything is described perfectly in great detail very simply and efficiently. Is this the way of publishing scientific findings of the future? Maybe something like this accompanied by the paper itself?

Great observation Jeb! Yes, I think that a video could make a scientific paper easier to understand. A video is similar in function to an oral presentation at a scientific conference and has the benefit of being available to more people. I hope to try to make a few of these type of videos in the future of previously written papers, but likely won't have any video clips - only still photos to demonstrate the concepts.

Nice to see the invention spirit alive and well. I like your posting of the new and improved DIY float valve idea, as it should be a great improvement. Keep making videos, as it great to share the simplicity of gardening with others.

Man, these gardening vids are even better than cat videos for getting into a positive, relaxed frame of mind. Who needs therapy when you've got Dr. Kratky and Jeeeb.

Brilliant idea, Dr. Kratky! Agreed that the 1/8" shur tape or similar will fail over time, though in my experience, the reason for failure has more to do with inconsistent use. By that I mean I neglect to fill the reservoir, which means the spongy material is not exposed to water anymore and thus dries and deforms. I have a ton of the 1/8" material left but am tempted to try the 1/4" neoprene. Has the thicker neoprene proven more failsafe for you? Thanks!

Yes, the neoprene foam has definitely been more durable.

You mentioned in the original video that this *could* be used for animal watering systems. What is the new material used as the "stopper", and does it present any problems for health of pets? I'm looking to build a off-grid watering system that doesn't involve lifting & tipping gravity feed bowls which weigh 16# or 24# (2 or 3 gallon), but rather an slightly elevated reservoir to a suitable large bowl on the floor. Thanks a lot for any advice.

Sponge neoprene stripping with adhesive by Cleverbrand Inc (CECOMINOD 054308) was purchased from Amazon. I don't have the MSDS on the material and suggest you contact this company for animal safety. You will need to study the MSDS for both the material and the adhesive.
