A year of weather 2022

Ғылым және технология

It's that time of year again where we present to you a whole year's worth of weather!
This annual visualisation rounds up the planet’s weather in just under 10 minutes. EUMETSAT’s Training Manager, Mark Higgins, talks you through just what exactly can be seen from space.
We have highlighted the major storms across the globe with the major storms labelled from light yellow to red, depending on their intensity.
We'd like to thank our international partners for their help in producing this video. This high resolution visualisation was produced by EUMETSAT’s digital media team and is composed of cloud imagery provided by Météo-France, which is superimposed over NASA's 'Blue Marble Next Generation' ground maps and changes with the seasons.
The visualisation includes imagery from the geostationary satellites of EUMETSAT, the National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in the US, the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) and the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). Merging our data, we are able to get these very comprehensive views of the entire planet.
For more information on the satellites we operate and what we measure from space, visit the EUMETSAT website at: eumetsat.int

I like how in the southern hemisphere near Antarctica there is just a constant stream of system moving west and then in the north there is so much land that all the weather systems just die off almost immediately

I love watching these every year. I live in Canada, and obvious why it is the "Great White North" where we are snow covered sea to sea for half the year!

I can’t wait for you guys to commission the Meteosat 12 satellite. It will be a revolutionary event in Meteorology in Europe.

The physics of masses in the atmosphere is fascinating because it looks like the mechanics of gravity and thermal dynamics apply to cloud behavior. When a storm system becomes larger it becomes less effected by thermal dynamics and pressure changes and becomes subject more to the inertia of its mass and gravity and begins to change pressure where it moves.

You missed the most significant atmospheric event of 2022 - the eruption of Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai on 15 January 2023. Unfortunately it was very close to the dateline and not clearly visible in this projection.

How much atmospheric temperature could be reduced by covering the Sahara? How much different the world would be if it was green, instead of a reflective surface that also stores heat energy?

Does Eumetsat have or provide more localized versions of this? I can't easily find any! I'm especially interested in seeing how cloud and rain patterns behaved around the Alps region for the year 2022, so something more focused in Europe or just Central Europe would be even better for my needs...

@@EUMETSAT1 'The future'? I guess that would be a nice thing to have... But in my specific case, I'm really just interested in the year 2022 because that's the only year where I saved daily meteorological predictions, local temperature data and photos from webcams spread across several places in the Alps... and I'm really not in the mood to spend another year doing that given that I'm not even a meteorologist! lol
