I totally wouldn't expect to need to sue. My expectation as an atheist would be that my child would disrupt it with irreverence and sarcasm to the point where he'd be forced to leave.

This was not a mistake. They knew what they were scheduling. They just didn’t get away with it, thankfully.

My secondary school graduation day at our very secular international private school, filled with the children of non-Christian dignitaries, decided to have a preacher give a sermon for HALF the duration of the ceremony. They learned right quick when 95% of students and their very powerful parents weren't very happy and never did that again in future ceremonies.

I think it’s time to start suing the churches in these situations. That way they can sue for much more money. That way you don’t take a lot of money from public schools.

I am a Christian. And this makes my blood boil! I would NOT want my child forced to sit through a religious service during school. They go to school to get an education not go to church.

@@cautiouslycynical9786 As an atheist, I think religious clubs should only be allowed if all mainstream religions are allowed to have a club, provided they follow all school rules regarding clubs and don't violate any laws or school policies. And no compulsory membership. Fully volunteer only. If you're caught press-ganging people to join, you get automatically disbanded.

When the “church” interferes in “State” business it violates the IRS mandates. Take away the tax exemption of any and all churches that don’t respect our Constitution. The school district should also lose State and Federal funding.

It is unclear if you mean the people that make up the ministry or you are using the word "Ministry" as a synonym for the church itself. While the church itself pays not taxes (because it does not make a profit), all of the employees of that church, including the pastor, are required to pay income taxes on any money or tangible benefit that they receive from the church. If they church owns the house they live in, then they must claim what that house would rent for as income. If the church owns a jet and they use that jet for purely personal business (which means that every time that jet takes off, it is to spread the word of god) then they would have to claim the cost of that flight as income. All church employees, including the pastor, are fully subject to federal income taxes. They church can own their house, their car, and their airplane, but if they use it for their own personal needs, it is taxable. If it is used only for spreading the word of god, or other churchy bull crap, then it is not income. So, if you mean the ministry as the church, then since it has no profit, there is nothing to tax. If you mean the ministry as the preacher or other church employees, they pay income taxes just like you and I do, though they may be exempt from paying social security or Medicare (Catholic clergy generally do not pay these because the church takes care of them after retirement). Remember this too. Doonald Trump didn't pay income tax for years. Amazon went 15 years before it made a profit and during that time, it did not pay any income taxes. If you are any kind of business and you don't make a profit, you don't pay taxes.

Thanks for speaking up because it caused me to seek for how to report that sort of thing and found that there is a way to report that sort of thing to the IRS. Now I'm wondering if people have done that quietly or if not why we haven't taken steps towards making it a regular occurrence to mass report all the non profits who break the tax exempt rules. I wonder if we could get all the Atheist channels to include links in the descriptions of videos and advocate for people to report. If we stand by and do nothing we only have ourselves to blame.

This is the kind of kid that scares Republicans. He's a free critical thinker that won't fall for their ridiculous policies.

I’m in Michigan. Last year there was 2 men standing outside my daughter’s middle school hanging out Bibles and telling kids to come to their church. I called the district office and was told the sidewalk outside the school is public property and they can’t make them leave. Makes me very uncomfortable because I know darn well if it was drag queens inviting kids to a book reading they’d get kicked out.

I have seen members of opposing religions threatening to do exactly the same to make them stop. That has been very effective. In AL they had a prayer service, but as it was a government meeting, all religions had to be recognized including Church of Satan. I'm not saying go that extreme, but hand out some other religions tracta and yeah, that's the argument, it's a public sidewalk, so all or none.

It warms my heart to see young adults being involved in activism like we were in the '60's & '70's.

When I was in AP English my teacher assigned us an in-class essay for our midterm that was a compare and contrast essay on one of our reading assignments to the journey of Moses. I walked up to her desk and said this was material we hadn’t discussed in class. She very smugly said that in AP classes we didn’t just tell her what she’d taught us we were expected to expand our thinking, to which I, with equal smugness replied, I don’t know a damn thing thing about the journey of Moses, but I can definitely expound on the idea of separation of church and state if you like. I’ve never seen someone so flummoxed. I knew I was getting an A no matter what I wrote after that.

And not just different religions, but even different Christian denominations this is such a bad idea. Are Catholic parents going to be happy their children are getting Protestant teachings at school? What about when a Pentecostal guest speaker leads all children in a session to speak in tongues? I grew up in a Latin American country with Catholicism as the stated national religion and even in that environment I never experienced prayer in public school or any religious services during school hours.

2:53 - Threatened with suspension? If I were a student attending that assembly and decided to leave, but was threatened with suspension if I followed through leaving, I'd say: "Suspend me! But my parents will sue!"

A few years ago, I "reconnected" on Facebook with an old friend I hadn't seen in almost 40 years, and the first thing he sent me was a video of the homecoming festivities at his local high school in some godforsaken holler in Eastern Kentucky. The football coach (and local pastor) was standing at the 50 yard line, screaming some bloodthirsty passage from the Bibble into a megaphone as the team carried a massive, 20-foot crucifix constructed out of railroad ties onto the field, which they then erected, after which they knelt on the field and fervently prayed to Jeebus for an hour or so. Shocked, I asked dude if this was a public school, and he said, "Yeah, what's the problem?" And when I reminded him of the essential, fundamental separation of church and state...my old friend immediately "unfriended" me. We are far, far too stupid and savage to survive.

In 1978, my south eastern Ohio high school held an all-school assembly where a "rock band" played. They played covers of popular songs and encouraged us to come to their concert that evening at the high school. My friends and I begged our parents for ticket money (which I knew my parents couldn't afford). But the concert ended up being a "Come to Jesus" type deal except there was rock music instead of a choir. I felt so ripped off. It didn't occur to me until years later that this was a school sponsored religious event. This became one of several events that led me away from my Methodist upbringing and into being an Atheist. Thanks for your channel.

These people are hypocrites. Had a school made it mandatory to attend a Muslim event, or a Pagan religious event they would be furious. The arrogance that they have "the truth," and disregard anyone else's spiritual or lack of spiritual belief is appalling.

I'm done "respecting" religion. Every time someone brings it up I'm calling them out. I don't care if it's a nun.

Im from the Netherlands and 20 years ago I played an online game, with people all over the world, and regularly had arguments with Americans about religion, even me stating that Im an atheist and think religion is nonsense was met by highly affronted people.. the fact you mention that was considered insulting... even the non religious Americans in the group said I should not be mentioning that out of respect... the fact that it is evenly respectless the other way around (forcing religious crap on non believers) was not understood, apparently the religious have more rights in the US.

I was often forced to go to these revivals as a child. They only confirmed and reaffirmed by disbelief in the ridiculous claims of religion.

I would have been a student who walked out. If I got suspended, somebody on staff would be suspended or fired. A "voluntary" religious assembly in school, NO. First thing that comes to mind is the separation of school and religion!

This is what really kills me, these people think it is their duty to shove their beliefs and religion down somebody's throat when they didn't ask for it!

Even with Christianity there are several different beliefs. The core may be the same. There is a God. But there are a lot of other beliefs that are very different. I'll choose what my child is exposed to and how. And help him decide what his beliefs are going to be. Even if he decides his are different from mine. No school has a right to force their beliefs on him.

As a child I always felt an outsider when the teachers did the Bible reading and prayer, but never had the nerve to say anything. There was one kid who did, however, and would immediately leave the room. I never told him how inspiring I found that and wish I had.

I was raised Methodist (in So. California - not a bible=thumping type church) and most of the kids in my public school were probably similar - various Christian denominations. We had one girl in our class who was not only Jewish, but an atheist. I look back with pride that I intervened (at probably age 9 or 10) when some other kids were giving her grief about not believing in god - telling them that people had the right to believe whatever they wanted to. (Maybe I was looking into a future where I would also become an atheist. ;) ) Fortunately, there was no prayer in school

I was raised a Christian and went to church every Sunday every Sunday as a child. My parents had no problem when I decided I would like to study all religions and decide for myself. I did not raise my son in any church, and he is an awesome human, great dad and phenomenal grandson. He is my 90 year old mom’s main caregiver. No religion necessary.

Church is for teaching religion, school is for teaching math science history .

This Max kid is going places, well played on his part. XD Everyone involved in foisting that "you better convert or burn" sermon ought to lose their job. That kind of thing is legitimately traumatizing.

Have you read the history of mankind? Its is full of Man does evil. In the Bible, we have God forgives, shows grace and mercy. Try reading about Moses and the parting of the red sea, the exodus and the giving of Manna for food, and then the book of John. To say that there is not god because man is evil is absurd. "The school" did not. The administrators ( stupidly and unconstitutionally) approved the FCA's request for a revival event with voluntary attendance. A few individual asshole teachers told their classes that attendance was mandatory and, when Jewish and other students asked to leave, said the doors were locked, exceeding the approved terms.

I, myself, get tired of ppl using the Bible to try to justify ignorance of forcing religion onto others. Just bc it's in the Bible doesn't mean ppl are understanding it correctly. I was a new employee at an evangelical Christian college. I was required to attend religious services during my workday, and I was not of the faith of the evangelical Christian college. I mentioned the separation of church and state to a coworker. Shortly thereafter, I was laid off. I am a Roman Catholic. Quite frankly, I was glad I no longer had to work there. I was already looking for work elsewhere. When I went to parochial school, we had some Protestant students who also attended. During religion class they were sent outdoors (This was in southern California and the weather was almost always nice.) to sit and read a book of their choice. They were not required to go to Mass or receive any Catholic sacraments EVER. Nobody said anything to these kids about their religious affiliation or tried to convert them. My big problem with organized religion are the ones that feel they have the right to impose their beliefs on others. That is the reason why the Pilgrims fled England and why the Founding Fathers created the separation between Church and State in our Constitution.

The fact that they forced Jewish kids into this is scary, but unfortunately it doesn't surprise me. While I was in the USA I taught music in a small private music and dance school. The owner was a Christian nationalist nutcase, the wife of a state senator. And I tried to explain to her that we cannot teach Jesus songs to Jewish kids (I had a Jewish student) and she was utterly confused as to why Jews don't follow Jesus...

The point is that it's REASONABLE TO OBJECT to one's children being exposed to it unless prior permission has been given, to point out that such behavior is objectionable, perhaps even to litigate for breach of contract where appropriate, and so on. Actions have consequences. It seems bizarre to me that this should have to be explained.

They did sue the school. The decision came down and all teachers in the district have to take an annual class on church-state separation so they can't claim another "oopsie". As far as the administrators ( whose limited, but still unconstitutional, terms and conditions set for the revival were exceeded by a few assholes ), I think this is one headache they will remember that will deter any repeats.

Always watch to the end of a video and read the third paragraph in any news story. It’s known as the “yeah..BUT” paragraph, and is the place where the qualifiers come out….often contradicting the headline, which is written to evoke strong emotions. The OP could have run the video on 2x speed if they didn’t have a few minutes to find out the rest of the story.🤷🏼‍♀️

Same thing happened to me in High School back in 1999. Only they told us what it was (Last minute) Our options were to attend, or get 3 days in school suspension. I spoke up during the "assembly" and was told that if I didn't sit down and shut up, I would get detention. By the end of my argument, they had given me 5 days after school detention. But it was an Easter sermon and revival. It reminded me of some churches I had been to. They talked about false religions and turning to Christ etc. And how anyone following one of these "False religions" would be going to hell. This was the last two hours of our school day. Many of us asked if we could leave early instead of going to the assembly and were threatened with suspension if we did. So I believe it was forced 100%

Thanks for putting this out there. Kudos to Max. Forty years ago I grew up in this school district, as a Christian. My HS principal was also my Sunday School teacher. However, this would never, ever have happened. If we allow the current Republican House leadership to have its way, this will be commonplace in US schools. And you can be certain that if Muslims, Jews, Hindus, Buddhists, etc had done this, there would have been national outrage. I am so disillusioned with organized “Christian” religion that I don’t really consider myself a Christian anymore. And Christian is in quotes because they don’t practice a Christianity that i recognize nor is supported by the New Testament. For the record, the school district is pronounced CAB-ul, not KA-bell.

One of my local churches has a big sign on the outside. I must say, I totally agree with this church which is rare for me to find any common ground with a church. The sign reads. "Where the sheep come to be fed" Every church should have this sign. Truth in advertising laws and all.

I was working in an elementary school in CANADA where American religious fanatics came here, got on the Parent teacher board and started finding ways to indoctrinate kids while they were in school away from their parents - it took 4 years but a small group of hardworking parents finally GOT THEM OUT and they never came back But it was AWFUL while they were in there trying to infiltrate by making, let's just say, weird and inappropriate relationships with children

Churches are tax exempt at any amount of revenue donation. In theory, the larger the church, the more charitable work they can do for the community. If you can prove that a church is not engaged in charitable activities and you can prove it, you can file with the IRS, and if the IRS investigates and agrees, they can revoke the tax exempt status. Exactly! As a fellow Evangelical "survivor" I can confirm that proselytizing to and "saving" non-believers is THE #1 tenet of their so-called faith. Followed close on by intolerance of difference (religion, race, gender, sexuality) which is viewed as "heathen" and irredeemable. They talk a lot about Jesus but don't practice what he preached. Some so-called churches became greedy like that. They stopped talking about Jesus and got caught up in the "prosperity gospel", which I have seen firsthand as nothing but a scheme to rob sincere people of lots of money, even their life savings. One of their main preachers is Kenneth Copeland, who famously owns the 4 jets; ugh, he's a nasty crook. That kind of stuff casts a bad light on the majority of churches, who are law-abiding and respectful.

This country has taken such huge steps backwards in recent years. Very sad!

It absolutely has felt backwards. But perhaps we’re all here enduring this to move the nation through these times and protect Democracy. My father was a soldier in WWII. My uncle died in it. My classmates’ older brothers died in Viet Nam. That was their contribution. They protected Democracy and gave us the country we grew up in. Now it’s our turn. That’s all. We’re just paying our dues.

I can assure you that they would *NOT* have forced me to attend a religious revival meeting (graduated in 1969). I refused to attend my high-schools pre-graduation assembly (they called it a baccalaureate) which [IMHO] had religious overtones; I was the only student in a class of ~600 who voluntarily didn't attend - I sat with the 3 students of my year who were not graduating! I also refused to vocalise "under God" during the ridiculous pledge of allegiance and eventually refused to recite the entire pledge.

Apparently, baccalaureates are meant to be religious. I went to my sister's in the 80s and was like "WTF is this??" Luckily, I didn't have to end up haveing to protest at my own, because my school wisely didn't have them.

Over 40 years ago when I was USAF boot camp the first Sunday rolled around and the morning was reserved for church. Those that did not attend services were supposed to have the morning free to hang out in the barracks dayroom and watch TV. But nope, they forced EVERYONE to attend either the Catholic mass or the generic protestant services (interestingly, they held Jewish services on Sunday morning as well). Of course, that came with a heavy push for the "heathens" to repent and I got an earful of proselytizing. On Monday morning I requested a few minutes with the squadron commander and his XO and explained that I was more than willing to phone my congressman's office and the base IG about the violation of my religious rights. Next Sunday I had the morning all to myself in the dayroom. Sunday after that I had about ten guys hanging out with me, and by the time we all got bussed out to our duty assignments nobody was going to church on Sunday. To this day the USAF is run by a cabal of evangelical Christians, particularly at the academy.

In Marine Corp Boot camp, going to service wasn't forced. However you would go to anything to get out of that barrack for a few minutes. In those three months I attended every service they offered. When I joined I was Baptist. When I got out I was still Baptist. While I was in the fleet I was exposed and attempted to be converted by some of every belief there is. Scientology, Pottery House, Jehovah witness and several others. I'm a baptist by choice.

Scientology was still better known as Dianetics, but the little whackjob "personality tests" were becoming more an more common. The death knell for most of them was the Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, which was peak stupid for the various Hindu ashrams/cults that preyed upon hippies that had melted their brains out with drugs. By the time they got around to David Koresh the "reincarnation of Jesus" cults were running out of followers - there was far more money (and women) to be had via televangelism. How Scientology hasn't been brought up on charges of slavery, kidnapping, and racketeering is beyond me. I joined around the same time. If you didnt attend services, they wanted you to clean barracks. Fortunately I was friends with a Jewish guy who told me to go with them. They took a bus to the San Antonio JCC where we hung out, played ping pong and watched tv.

Im just pointing out that the other grade school fiction that religious works were compared to didn't have prescriptive messages about eternal damnation, and perhaps the bible shouldn't be grouped with them.

Hell, I was in a Walmart in Louisiana and they went on the loud speaker and asked everyone to take a moment for the Lord’s Prayer. It’s a very different world.

Good for Max! There is hope for democracy and its through the children.

My 19 year old son regularly walked out on guest speakers while he was in high school. Or engaged the speakers in debates on their topic. And usually won. He’d have had a heyday with this.

I bet this is happening all over the Bible-belt and beyond.

"Mistake..." Yeah, right. They KNEW what they were doing and got caught with their theological pants down around their ankles. They know, "it's easier to ask for forgiveness than it is to ask for permission."

We should all be equally concerned that our tax dollars are being used to fund private religious schools.

I lived in Huntsville, AL during 1995-99 and worked in the mail room of the University of Alabama Huntsville. One of my fellow employees was angry because classes like history, math and more were used by teachers to read the bible and pray. More of this goes on than we believe because peer pressure makes it difficult or impossible to correct. Several years ago a friend was teaching at a public school here in Tennessee which was posting the 10 commandments, bible verses, etc, and filed a complaint with the ACLU. They won their case and order was restored for a while. After a few years things returned to illegal religious instruction at that public school and my friend was driven from her job due to threats, abuse and a general hostile atmosphere. Many people here in Bibleland don't care about our constitution, laws, etc. They have made that clear.

That BS should be banned from all schools.

Max and brave, patriotic West Virginia high school students, hooray for you! I’m so proud of you. In this challenging time when Democracy is under siege you are like a cool breeze by the water on a blisteringly hot summer day. Never forget Democracy is not a gift. It is a right that must be fought for in boring, small ways and sometimes in large ways. I fully expect you to learn all you can about our Constitution and one day run for office. If you’re 15 now, well I expect we’ll have a president from West Virginia around, say, 20 years from now. Persevere! I know from my experience that the God who gave us the right to choose (free will) is real, and that’s why I support everyone’s, including atheists’, right to believe as they choose. Blessings.

The state of West Virginia should give full college scholarships(Up to $90,000 per year per student) to all of the students forced to attend the religious services.

I work for the Mississippi Department of Mental Health. We had a state wide conference recently. Guess how we opened and closed it? What we did during group luncheon at the meals? Yep, christian prayer. I didn't bow my head, and kept eating during the meals.

I'm a native Mississippian myself, raised in the Baptist church. I've come to my senses, though and I guess you'd say I'm now an agnostic. A few years ago I went to a dental appointment where the staff was gathered at the end of the hallway in a circle, holding hands and praying. Except for one young woman who looked extremely uncomfortable. They were evidently praying for one of them who was about to leave work to go home and deal with some kind of marital issue. Whatever. But then the technician who came in to prep me for my procedure had tears of Jesus joy still pouring down her face and kept saying God is so good, God is in control , etc. Then she proceeded to talk to me like I was a baby, literal baby talk. I was probably 25-30 years her elder. I noped right TF out of there, snatched the drape off, handed it to her and walked out. Pray if you want, but that was CRAZY.

When people get in trouble for this it just fuels their persecution complex and they will do it again.

The Texas indoctrination of my children started in the 4th grade. The parent - teacher night, as we walk into there class had a large poster with the books showing us the kids favorite books in there homes - the first one was a King JAMES Bible as no. 1. Supposedly kids decided the books to read. What wonderful 3rd and 4th graders. in my 1965 - 5th grade class of 100+, we were taken on a field trip to watch BenHur. Children were very emotional and alot crying when it was over. I was raised catholic and was told it was satan who ran that church. So disgusting. I rejected it all soon after that. TY sir - you are honoring our great constitution. Your truth will prevail.

It seems incredible that the need is there to remind the staff of the rules every year.
