A World Without Privacy

Ғылым және технология

The current state of privacy is bad. Surveillance today is pervasive, and the effects of this surveillance on the fabric of society is profound. We need to make sure we’re fully aware of the consequences of creating a world without privacy.
If we want to reclaim privacy in the digital age, the answer is not to throw out our devices, it’s to truly embrace technology, and leverage all the new, cutting edge privacy and encryption technologies being developed every day.
We are empowered human beings. And many of us aren't just passive enjoyers of technology -- we have a say in the direction that this technology will take, and are helping write its future. It's in our power to make sure that the future we create is the best possible timeline, not the worst.
So let’s be intentional about the kind of future we want.

Naomi thank you for your continued efforts to fight for Privacy... The "I've got nothing to hide really needs it's own video that is easy to share and is short/quick enough for anyone to watch" ... I find my mom won't watch things over a few minutes long and this message of "I've got nothing to hide" is so hard to get through to people.

Tell them that if they have nothing to "hide" then why do they close the door to the restroom when using it. If they have nothing to hide why do they insist on living in a gigantic wooden box that is often separated by miles of land from their neighbor. If they have nothing to hide I am sure they would not mind sharing their bank account numbers with me. These are the same mouth breathers that claim sharing creative content with your friends is the same as stealing. The types of things that people like us take for granted in understanding its obvious implications are bewildering to people like that because they've always been on whichever the side the current morale wind is blowing. Keep it in mind that they didn't arrive at those conclusions thorough their own process of critical thought. They were told how to think. These are the ones who are the most dangerous because they can be convinced to commit atrocities to their fellow man for the their own self preservation. Concepts such as this require a certain amount of labor in understanding that they will never take on. This is why the sin of sloth is so repulsive.

@@NaomiBrockwellTV you could point out that a quote about "nothing to hide" that is widely (though possibly incorrectly) attributed to nazi minister of propaganda goebbels is probably not the best way to support an argument about a 'harmless' bigbro regime... ...or, if you want to avoid an ad hominem attack, i like edward snowden's quote the best: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nothing_to_hide_argument > Edward Snowden remarked "Arguing that you don't care about the right > to privacy because you have nothing to hide is no different than saying > you don't care about free speech because you have NOTHING TO SAY." [emphasis added]

@NaomiBrockwellTV I disagree with the beginning. Although we do not shout hatefilul words at a face on a big screen, many type hateful words on the little screen they carry around with them. Had George Orwell thought of it he probably would have had us doing that in his book. People feeling a bit better after having their say or rant not realising what they say or rant is being recorded for posterity and may be used against them in the future as happens now.

"I don't have anything to hide" -- "I'm too dense to see the current effects of business and govt knowing everything about my thoughts and life, and I'm too dull to see how things could change like they have since forever." When you are talking to someone who won't leave that position, take it as a signal that everything you say or send to them will always be out in the open.

Start abandoning the data. NBTV (& other channels) has many tips and tricks. For me I use an android open source phone as my every day driver. I play with late model cars all day (and never connect my phone) but my cars are old and not connected. I would never go on my signed in YT account and auto play muted content opposite of my preferences, that might muddy data.

Considering how much people put on social media that can hurt them *today* (the boss/parents/school can see what you were out doing), and are shocked when they get fired or whatever. Too many, especially the younger set, have no concept of or appreciation for actual privacy, except for maybe from their parents, for whom they have no respect in the first place.

To be fair, however, around 45:00, talking about a change in society where we just keep all our of stuff, this behavior isn't new at all, but with physical photo albums, scrap books, and piles of boxes of stuff, they are much more costly and time consuming, and space consuming. Now that storing these things as mere data, for nearly free, in mass quantity, yes, the _volumes_ to which we do this, and how easy it is for a bad actor to use and abuse, yes, that's entirely true. ...I still have my mother's photo albums. I couldn't let you off the hook on that one. ;P

Privacy is less about "hiding" and more about "the individual process of discovery and understanding". Think about it... your experience and perceptions and processing of those occur in the privacy of your inner feelings and thoughts; it is how human beings are designed. Just as we do not have other people chew our food for us, or none of us would have teeth and we would all die, just as we don't have other people walk for us or we would not have legs, and I could go on and on... ...We do not have other people think for us or we would become stupid and incapable as humans; as thinking human beings. Privacy is critical to the human being, physically, mentally, dare I say "spiritually", meaning to our "humanity". I.e., the nature of the human individual is to be curious, sense that which lay beyond what we know, to reach for that and realize that which feels / seems greater than what we know now in the moment ...through an innate private individual process. As well, "our humanity", what compels humans to consider morality, and that is important to building family, society and so much more ...is based in "empathy", a sensibility only occurring privately as well in each individual (even though some lack empathy). Without privacy, a human being is robbed of there individual processes that make us "human", and layed exposed and vulnerable and at the mercy of those who would use them in any way they may see fit. It is a crime against our humanity that we are up against in the face of sacrificing individual privacy. Thank you Naomi!

Absolutely. I think she moved to the United States but we honestly need more awareness and privacy all over the world. The biggest problems are the United States government and the Chinese government. They are both spying on the people, ordinary citizens, in their countries, as well as international citizens. European citizen data is being collected by the United States government. The U.S. government also has a government facility located in Australia near Alice Springs. No doubt, the U.S. government is collecting data on Australians too. And now the U.S. government made a registry of data brokers and are purchasing information on citizens from those data brokers. Those same data brokers collect data on people worldwide. It's a global problem. The only way around it would be reaching out to law makers and tech companies letting them know your grievances and your need for more privacy. Apple is already trying to protect us but we need more companies and lawmakers on our side. Edit: we should probably start writing to car manufacturers too. Some vehicles have high tech computers in them that collect all the information about drivers and passengers and sell that information to insurance companies and data brokers. They watch us in our cars too.

I'll say it once and I'll say it again: if you are a law-abiding citizen then privacy should not matter to you. Speaking as somebody who is a dual national, has property in three different countries, and files an annual FBAR statement for my numerous overseas bank accounts (what a hassle that is: not only Treasury but the same information must be filed with the IRS). That said, I stay under the radar and remember in the USA the tax audit rate, historically, is much less than 1%. In fact the IRS actually audits very poor people as much as it does rich people. Not filing all your forms will get you an audit. Happy April 15th!

But imho the important point is being aware that there is a real problem and that companies' gluttony for personal data does nothing but growing year after year.
