A World-Renowned Harvard-Trained Eye Surgeon Comes to Faith

Ғылым және технология

Dr. Ming Wang graduated from Harvard & MIT and is a world-class cataract and LASIK eye surgeon, philanthropist, and community activist. Growing up in the 1960s, Ming had to play the Chinese erhu violin and dance in order to avoid being sent away to labor camps for a life of hard labor and poverty, a devastating fate that fell upon 20 million youths in China. He eventually made his way to America with only $50. Sean interviews Dr. Wang about his inspirational story and the reasons he became a Christian.

Nope you don't need a creator. It's a lot of messy design especially in the photo-cells and the way the nerves face away from the light source. Richard dawkins literally mentions the poorly designed nature of the eye. Our eye becomes powerful because our brain patches the poor quality image coming from the eye.

I was Assistant Head Nurse for eye surgery for several years. Long ago, I learned to explain how I knew God had created the world by explaining the incredible complexity of one of the most simply appearing organs in the body. But even if there were more time it would be impossible to create one from zero. Time is an enemy not the solution for creating organisms. Evolutionists don't want the existence of God creating reasons which do not exist. "The truth is a person", says John Lennox.

This is "our" Dr Wang! He was our first doctor in Nashville to perform Lasik surgeries, and of course, he was a whole lot more than that. I remember it was cool to read about his two degrees (he has more now, I believe) and interesting to read a little about his love of ballroom dancing. But it was much more wonderful to read that He is a strong believer in Jesus, our brother in faith in Jesus. Dr Wang was not born in Nashville, but we are "proud" of him, here, for lack of a better word. We certainly claim him as our own. There's so much more to his life than we realized (including the ballroom dancing). This sounds like a great, worthwhile movie.

Several eyes have evolved in nature from the extremely basic to more complex, so we know all stages of eye complexity can exist. There doesn't need to be a fully formed human eye appearing by magic. The human eye is very badly designed if a god did it. Lots of people need to wear glasses and there is a blindspot because the optical nerve is attached inside the retina at the back of the eye so there cannot be any photo receptive cells in that location. Evolution is not an accident, it's a natural process in living organisms caused due to pressures from the environment.

There's other species that can see better than us and birds can see colours that we can't. I'm not so sure that we are the pinnacle of creation. There's no knowing for sure in this life. Our brains can't conceive the complexity of the universe. If they could there'd be no reason to be here. We are placed here to learn and do the best we can with our limited abilities before we return.

We were taught about the evils of communism in China but nothing about what Dr. Wang is describing. We migrated to US in the 70's and finished my education here in California and never heard a single thing against communisn, facism, marxism. I learned about these evils from reading books from the public library. The books I read are no longer available at the public libraries in California. He answers prayers with yes/no/not now in His perfect omniscience that goes far beyond a human’s understanding. The mature Christian knows this and yields to Him in faith, no matter what the outcome of his or her prayer. I would be very blessed if a Christian doctor asked to pray over me before surgery bc I know my God is Sovereign, able, and loves me.

There is a prayer for a dying person in the small blue book called The Original Pieta Prayer Book on page 29. The prayer is called "THREE VERY BEAUTIFUL PRAYERS." One can also invoke or pray to St. Joseph, the foster-father of Jesus as he is the Patron Saint of the Dying. Your patients are well taken care of. I used to read before that doctors and nurses were taught how to sacramentally baptized newborn infants who are in danger of dying in the hospitals. ( Catholic hospitals, I guess). Thanks be to God.

Hi Sean, For the last 18 years I’ve had the honour and privilege of working for a Christian Optometrist. Your video was on the side bar here and it caught my attention, because my boss also came to faith in Christ because of what he learned about the human eye in university. It was so interesting to learn about how Dr. Wang developed the Amnio Membrane contact lens and how the Lord honoured his prayer and showed him how it could be done without harming a fetus. What a powerful testimony he has. It’s so beautiful to see how he honours the Lord in all he does. I love that he prays with his patients before surgery. Thank you so much for inviting Dr. Wang on as your guest, the whole interview was captivating and I learned so much. I’ve shared the video with my boss and I know it will bless him as it has me. However, it's tough to reach what he has achieved today if he had stayed in his native country. In fact, it's almost impossible to achieve his medical feat and accomplishments if he hadn't chosen to study and work in USA. Even till this day, the Chinese government does not want to admit that they do intervene in its citizens' religious beliefs. Therefore, it is not easy to come to know Christ and be a Christian there. Let us pray for all Christians in the world, regardless of our races and nationalities, to be strong in our daily trials and tribulations. Prayers can really change things and situations positively. A humble brother in Christ with great wisdom, knowledge, and skill, gifted by the Lord to accomplish His will in this broken world! He challenges me to excellence in my calling, also. I’m looking forward to seeing and talking with him as we walk with Jesus in the life to come! Thank you for this great interview!

An amazing man! It’s so heartwarming to hear how he helps the little children. I can’t remember the exact quotation but a Soviet writer once said that when he eats more than his share of bread, he is leaving some other person without anything to eat. I think we all should ask our Father how we can be a better person to everybody.

3:07 My dad was the same. His family was poor and had no furniture. He had to wear the same clothes for years while growing. But his parents worked hard. My grandparents are doing ok now but have only ever been ok. My dad though, who's almost retired now, hasn't missed a single day of work in nearly 5 decades - despite taking on 3 jobs on a few hours sleep each night when I was a kid and things were particularly bad. He's not rich by any means but climbed a long way to be more than comfortable, and he deserves everything he has.

Thank you for sharing. Your story is fascinating and inspiring. Having lived in Beijing for a year as an English teacher, I became fond of the Chinese people. Today, I am a psychology professor who teaches piano in the USA to young children, including Asian Americans. The diversity brings joy. While it's sad that our national political differences are widening, we can appreciate people like you who overcame all odds. You're remarkable in reminding me of the need to be grateful for the spiritual-scientific intelligence of people, and to not discriminate against them but use "open arms." May our arms and eyes be more open as a result of what you do... Thank you! Namaste🙏🏼

I asked my ophthalmologist why he left neurosurgery for eye surgery? He said the eye is the most elegant organ in the body. He bowed his head in prayer before my procedure. That was the last image I saw before I slept. It was very successful, I might add.
