Bought the 1" x 6" from Nathan a few weeks ago for an extra large 10+ pound fatwood ferro rod project and had it in my hands within a few days. Super fast service. The only problem was, in less than a minute after opening (literally) I was like a kid on Christmas morning and started throwing sparks across the room without realizing what I'd done. So much for waiting until the project was complete but just couldn't resist.

I’ve got a lot of ferro rods. Backup for lighters. I just got the super dragon. Huge. At my request he drilled a lanyard hole. I plan on a lanyard made with fire cord. Super fast shipping. Great communication. He didn’t include extra stuff, but I didn’t expect him to and don’t understand why everybody is bitching about it. This is the last ferro rod I’ll ever need but that one inch guy is calling my name. After all, size matters. Nice video.

Makes a heIIufa signal flash, too! Surveying, we needed something to sight in across a canyon. with the old transits and theodolites. On some days this worked. At night, a really good flash will light up a whole mountain lake basin for an instant. Lots of fun ... fire starter too!

For what it's worth: when I was 10 years old I was playing with a magnifying glass. I was focusing the sun to a point and burning several sheets of paper. A gust of wind came up and blew it on an evergreen tree. I almost burnt my house down. My dad got the fire put out but it scorched paint on the house. I have no fear of ferro rods just magnifying glasses haha!!! And I do have the super dragon. Good video!

I ordered the BEAST with an Osage Orange handle...the man...sent me that rod...and a replacement...free. I bout fell off the bed when I opened the box...you cannot ask for better service...and a no risk return 100% satisfaction guarantee too?? The replacement had a few "imperfections" but hey it's a ferro...you're gonna use it anyway...it won't stay perfect...that's the purpose. Slap a thin cost of Vaseline on em for storage...wipe it off and throw that in your next tinder bundle!!...I love all kinds of ferros...but these are very quickly becoming my favorite go to..can't seem to get the Dragon Snot showers with a thin striker...so a 90 degree high speed lathe bit or a Corona tool sharpener is next!😁

victor castle the gorilla epoxy that look like two syringes, that you mix together after you squeeze it out. That’s what I use, and it works good. I even coat the handle with it to seal it. It dries pretty quick and seals in the resin.

It also might be that he doesn’t have any extra stuff on hand, he’s not a company, he’s an individual. But rest assured, you have a damn good ferro rod, one of the best available, enjoy it. A lighter is only as good as the tinder and fuel it contains. A Bic Is a ferro rod connected to a butane gas release system. A Zippo has a liquid fuel source, and wick tinder combo. It's still a FERRO rod...and a striker.Striker quality, hardness and sharpness, ferro components, and tinder and fuel quality are the issues, no matter what mechanical device is involved. Nathan makes high quality stuff. PERIOD.

Ten reasons NOT to use a ferro rod. 1) calories. I burn about ten times the calories with a ferro rod as I do with a bic lighter. While that might not seem like a big deal to most people, calorie burn vs. calorie intake is vital in a survival situation. Your body literally begins to consume itself when you burn more calories than you intake. 2) reducing clutter and bulk. A mini bic is one item. A ferro rod is usually 3 items(ferro rod, small lanyard, and striker). 3) I can light hundreds or even thousands(3000 according to Bic website for a regular size lighter) of fires with a single mini bic lighter. The same amount of fires made with a ferro rod and it is probably going to break or need replacing. 4) ask chain smokers how often a bic lighter has failed them. Nearly all, if not all, responses will be never. 5) while making a fire with a ferro rod makes for sexy videos, sensible people who know what they're doing will use what works best. 6) suppose you have an injury to one arm. No problem for a mini bic lighter. Try lighting a fire with a ferro rod one handed. 7) our tools are second only to our minds in terms of importance when it comes to survival and doing anything to damage or degrade them like repeated scraping on a knife just doesn't make sense. 8) cost. I can buy a lifetime of fire starting for a fraction of the cost of a quality ferro rod. 9) most ferro rods are black and easy to lose in nature. Bic lighters can be any color that can stand out on the ground making them harder to lose. 10) availability. You can get a bic lighter nearly everywhere that sells anything. Use the best tools for the job. The bic lighter is the best. However, thank you for all you do for the bushcraft and survival community.

@@MattP-BandB Hi Matt, Thanks for this thoughtful reply. Keep your bic in a zip-lok bag and try using a ferro rod one handed after an injury.
