A Wild Camp at Loch Grannoch in The Galloway Forest Park March 17'

Sunday 12th March 2017 we headed over to the Cairnsmore of Fleet Nature Reserve this is one of the wildest and remotest corners of southwest Scotland and lies on the edges of the Galloway Forest Park.
We had a great night on the beach with a campfire watching the stars... #garnforaratch #WildCamping

Hiya Ben, This area is great for camping, great to get a level pitch for once. We put a few random twigs in the sand as markers for the water rising, because at one time the water had engulfed the entire beach, we could see where the waterline had been. Great to get into this area before the midge storm, which could be a problem this year because of the mild winter. Cheers for watching, hope your other half has got the results she wanted, and you can hit the hill's again soon. ATB R&D

thanks, Cracking video. We have walked in there a few times now and love the place , even spent New Years at the "big viaduct" once . My family has some history at loch grannoch, my great grand father would stay alone at the lodge by the loch all week preparing it for the weekend visitors . He then would go down to Gatehouse station to pick them up with his horse Maggie ( not the Maggie mentioned in your vid , think there was several horses down the years all called Maggie) lovely place. Hi Dave, Glad our vid rekindled some memories of the area for you. Your great grandfather was a lucky man to have stayed in such wonderful surroundings, it's such a shame the lodge is boarded up now. The place was used for outdoor pursuits in it's later life i understand, but no longer. Galloway is a real gem of a place, a place we are both very fond of. The maggie memorial was just a point of interest i came across whilst researching our trip. Thanks for your message and telling us a little more about the place...Regards Roger & Diane

Finally caught up with everyone... this was the last video I had to watch from all my subs. Really nice spot that, if the hunting lodge is all boarded up and the boat house in disuse, it is a shame that they can't do something bothy related with them. It is sad to see buildings fall into decay for no real reason other than possibly greed? Aye, I've noticed the midge is out early this year. We didn't really have much of a winter, so can see it being a particularly bad year for midge and ticks. We need more critters that eat them instead of them eating us. If it were not for the little blighters, it would be lovely sitting on that bit of sand on a late warm summer evening watching the sun go down. Thanks for sharing.

Brilliant guys, That was another nice relaxing video. It always means so much more to me when you guys make video's in and around my area as I can recognise the places. The acid rain killed off all the fish in the loch between Loch Valley at Loch Enoch before, but I believe the were all restocked again many years ago. The midges coming out early might just be a good thing for us, especially if we get some hard frost between now and April to kill them off, if we don't were in big trouble. Lol

Hi Glenn, Derek brought this area to our attention when he and Kenny went canoeing. Cracking place for a camp, thats great they have restocked the loch's. The non indiginous trees which the forestry plant won't help the balance of things, although we did note rather more species of bird in this area. Some planted forests are just dead, no sign of any living creature. The midge is certainly stirring, they can spoil the whole camping experience when in full force. Cheers for watching...ATB R&D

There are forestry gates that are sometimes open and sometimes closed, depending on where they are hauling the wood out, risky if on your way out they have closed them. It is'nt a very hilly walk in, a few little gradients but nothing serious, your call really mate. Bolt crops or an angle grinder if you get stuck. Phone signal is poor up there too. Have a great camp...midge repellent and head net will be needed...ATB R&D

Great video. I'm off to Galloway Forest with my sister on Saturday and it's her first wild camp. I'd planned on parking on the Raiders Road but have read that it's closed. This spot looks perfect. Did u approach from the south please?

Would love to go there, but would need a car to get there. Public transport is probably a no-go to take me anywhere near there

Not sure really, there are forest gates that are locked most of the time. It's a good long enjoyable walk in from the viaduct. Happy Camping...
