A Wet And Wild Dartmoor Microadventure

In mid-February my friend Ann (@thistle_dragon) head out to Dartmoor National Park for a wee micro adventure. We had planned on hiking from Shipley Bridge car park to Burrator Reservoir, wild camping overnight, then hiking back to form a loop. However, as the storms grew worse we knew we had to get off the moors and follow a plan B... and C!
As a disclaimer I would like to add that we have years of experience between us in these kinds of conditions. Simply we were struggling to find a safe place to pitch up and opted to use an escape plan before things got dangerous.

Nice video. Getting lost and dealing with adverse weather conditions, is all part of hiking and at times, can really put one's skills and determination to the test. Your video also gives a timely reminder of just how dangerous Dartmoor can become when the wet weather sets in with flash floods etc (there's a reason the British Army train on the moor). Glad you safely made it to the bunk-house for a dry night's kip. Some nice footage of the landscape of the moor.

Great to be able to watch these videos while on lockdown, the weather reminds me of 4 years ago when I camped in Wicklow mountains Ireland in mid Feb......lots of torrential rain, I woke up to find myself floating in my air mattress, the river had burst its banks and our camping area flooded.........can't forget adventures like that......keep the videos coming Abbie, I'm sure you have plenty in the archive.

Thank you for showing how moorland walking can really be, and not just either fine weather, strong bravado type walkers, or 'everything is Fine's. It is really valuable to show changes of plan, following features, getting off the movies safely, and enjoying a road walk option rather than considering it a failure.

On my doorstep, I’ve lost count of the times I’ve trekked that route across the moor. Very wise decision to get off the moor in that weather as it gets worse very quickly as you know. I’ve never stayed at Harford looks cool.

Wow Abbie! What a great adventure! I loved this vid. Love the wild weather! I remember getting lost on the moors - in a car in the fog! I must have been about 6. I have only recently found your channel and love your videos. And you are such a beautiful person and great inspiration. I am surprised you haven been snapped up by a tv channel to promote the beauty of the country, and how to be an overcomer. I was born in the UK but moved to Australia just before my 10th birthday way back in the 60’s. I love bushwalking here and also just ‘across the ditch’ in New Zealand. If you ever have the opportunity you need to visit down under. Australia is beautiful! And New Zealand exquisite!! Stay wild! x

Came to this video for inspiration. I am about to head out for an over-nighter on the Appalachian Trail, with the forecast calling for two days of rain. Hope I can keep my attitude as good as Abbie and Ann's. Sometimes I think if I didn't have bad luck, I would have no luck at all.

I think we were out leading some Ten Tors training on the second day of your walk. Judging by when the snow fell, you missed our group by about 15 or 20 minutes as we had just walked up over the railway bridge following the Two Moors Way. We got hit by a blizzard just past Stowford Moorgate, it was a Saturday at about 8.45am. We also visited the Clapper Bridge (twice because we couldn't cross higher up between Ryders Hill and Redlake Tip) and then like you followed the Two Moors Way back to Ivybridge along the Puffing Billy track.

Great video, Abbie. This is one of my local parts of Dartmoor and I know it fairly well but I can comfortably say I've not experienced conditions as bad as those before. The worst I had was mist and drizzle (minus the wind) along the Two Moors Way between Ivybridge and Hexworthy a few years back. I hope you and Anne return in better weather to see the artefacts and views!

It’s funny isn’t it, right now we’d welcome getting out into horrible bogging wet weather! Doubly so for me because I’m on crutches due to a knee problem - this too like the lockdown, will pass. The tramway was like that when we walked it on the TMW, it seems it forms a natural water course after rain. We spent quite a while hopping from one side to the other trying to keep our feet dry! Given the current situation stay safe in there!
