A Weekend in the Life in Seoul, Korea VLOG | Indie Show, Seoul Fashion Week, and More

I had an extra cool weekend even though the air quality was sooo bad here in Seoul so I thought I'd film it! Not every weekend is this fun hehe It was so nice to meet Leni and then my boyfriend and I went off to see a show in Hongdae for the first time in a loooong time! Hope your weekend was fun too!

    1. Very cute haircut. 2. Loving the indie Korean music recommendations! 3. "What the fuck is this??" lololololl 4. I feel you about the books. I do that with tv shows and movies too - I just can't get myself to read or watch something until I feel it ~calling to me~ (if that makes sense). 5. True crime is amazing. I'm a big fan of Buzzfeed Unsolved, which can be pretty ridiculous sometimes but the YT episodes are only like 10 minutes long so you can get through them quick. 7. I love your "day in the life" videos. It's so fun to see all the places you go. :)

I don't know if you've seen it already, but I started watching the Buzzfeed Unsolved series and it's pretty great. Cherry blossom madness is real. If they can flavour it, it will be cherry blossom. I've seen some fashion week photos on Instagram and it looks like it was really big this year with a lot of celebrities appearing. I keep meaning to ask (and forgetting) for the next Q&A what the library situation is like in Korea. I love my local library but I feel like I don't hear much about them in Seoul. Looks like you had a really nice weekend!

I love Mystery/True Crime podcasts! I listen to Casefile and Criminal. Casefile is a basic telling of what happened and how investigations unfolded, but I enjoy the way it is narrated (not a lot of extra fluff). Criminal isn’t just true crime topics and it often includes interviews. I am definitely going to check out the podcast you suggested!

your hair is angelic! i finished The Secret Life of Trees and now i'm reading The Alchemist by Paulo Coehlo. it's not quiiiite magic realism but that's the sort of fiction kick i'm on...i read The House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende a few weeks ago and loved it! i don't listen to a lot of crime podcasts :( the main one i listen to is a comedy podcast called My Brother, My Brother and Me. I also really like A Piece of Work, which is about works of art in NYC (mainly the MoMA) and was made by Abbi Jacobson from Broad City. I think you'd like that one! the episodes are pretty short and there aren't that many episodes

I love Invisibilia, which has been mentioned several times. The first episode I heard, and maybe their first episode, was about a boy who gradually went into a comatose state. He could hear everything, just not react. I sat in the parking lot at Target for 15 minutes to finish it, and there's not much worse than a Target parking lot for hanging out. And I'm going to Seoul this week, too!! :)

Unsolved Murders: True Crime Stories is my favourite podcast at the moment! 👌☺️ They've got so many episodes up (88 for now, all about 40 minutes in length). They have reenacted parts of the crime done by voice actors (none of that boring "presenters trying to be funny" stuff). It's pretty amazing, I would highly recommend!!! P.S. the air was so terrible that weekend. but i did manage to go to garosugil to show friends around. and let me tell you how glad i was to brave the fog. the current gentle monster showroom is what i can only describe as a flamboyant edgar allan poe the raven (well in this case crow) meets where the wild things are. i strongly recommend visiting it for a good laugh -- it was a mood lifter! i'm currently reading han kang's the white book. but recently finished mila kundera's the unbearable lightness of being which was recommended to me via your comments section! it has now become one of my favorite books.

Its a lady who interviews people who have had different experiences with death, loss, crime, etc. idk I found it super intriguing and always put it on when I was doing my math homework haha! it just gives you insight into different people's perspectives on issues and kinda puts you in their shoes.

Also: I believe BBC did a special tv production of "Death on the Nile" a few years ago (it's also Hercule Poirot, if I remember correctly?), if you're interested in checking that out. Another book that I've also been wanting to read is this true crime memoir called "I'll Be Gone in the Dark" which is about the wife of comedian Patton Oswalt, who died suddenly whilst researching/writing for this book, which was about the Golden State Killer. She apparently had done copious amounts of research and made a website to organize it all, and when she died, the investigators working with her on it helped finish/publish the book. It sounded interesting when I read about it in the paper, and thought it might be up your alley.

For true crime podcasts, I listen to True Crime Garage. Those guys go really in-depth with the crime and it can end up being a a two-part or four-part episodes. I've also gotten into Real Crime Profile. It's has an FBI profiler and an criminal behaviorist from New Scotland Yard and they have really great discussions on the crime and expert insight. I learn a lot from them. The minisodes from My Favorite Murder also takes away the chatting. They go straight to the story.

KZread is actually a great place to learn about true crime and there are some really serious and well done videos out there!

I have Agatha Christie in paperback. Then they brought out hardcovers in original print. I got those. Then I decided I needed them in kindle format too because I cannot carry a whole set of books around with me. At the moment I am reading James Patterson's Confessions #4 The Murder of an Angel and Tarun Shanker's These Vicious Masks and Houpt's Museum of the Missing. I always have more than one book going at a time because I never know my mood by the end of the day.

I totally get what you mean by "right time" for a book. Sometimes it takes me months to actually read a book that I put on my reading list. But you feel when the time's right, and then you enjoy the book even more and it really resonates with you. At least that's my experience :-) Did you read "Out" by Kirino Natsuo?

If you are interested on podcast and want to practice Spanish, can I recommend you "perdón por el spanglish?". It revolves around the lives of two friends: imagine listening to them conversing when they reunite every week. They are both mexican: Fa is a booktuber and Sofi is a lawyer. They talk about their lives (their families, boyfriends, dogs and other animals) but they also talk about Fandom (BTS, Taylor Swift, books, painting, Turkish dramas, chismes their audience send them about their lives) and social happenings in Mexico and other places that are relevant to talk about in that week (like feminism in Mexico and the hell that us as women have been through mostly in the last couple years). I think you'd like them. It's also interesting because they, as the title says, speak spanglish all through it. I'm not sure if they have subtitles. If you decide to listen to these amazing ladies, I hope you enjoy it!

Wow those street scenes at night in Seoul are so freakin awesome! What a cool city! I live in Chicago and there is literally nothing like that! It's so boring.... I have a question about the pollution masks people wear. In photos and videos, it seems like people just wear simple fabric masks when the air is bad. But there are really good tech-ed out science-based pollution masks available from like 3M and other companies. I wonder why you and others in Seoul don't wear those masks that filter out pollution much better than simple fabric? Is it a fashion thing (i.e. not wanting to look unattractive)?

  • @caricakes

    @caricakes

actually the white one i was wearing isnt a simple fabric one, its got multiple layers of varying thickness (one layer feels like cardboard haha) and the industrial ones are just not as easily available - one of my coworkers has one! also it generally is never this bad, thisis the worst its ever been so i think people just dont know what to do :/

Good to know that there are other genre (rock) of music in Korea besides K-Pop. I'll check out the links on your description later. But here in the U.S., it seems like rock music in general is dead and J-Rock has taken over. And the three J-Rock acts that has blown up in the U.S. are all fronted by women *thumbs up* The founder of this act worked at a maid cafe in Japan: kzread.info/dash/bejne/jKR1u9CPerufc7w.html Heck, I got their latest album directly from Japan because it comes with a blu-ray/DVD of one of their live concerts. The other two act are Babymetal and Scandal (not to be mistaken for the 80s Scandal).

I had to google who this person is hahaha!!!! So she's basically Babymetal but without the metal eh? I guess J-pop is getting popular in the U.S. also. I also read about some J-Pop acts like Kyary Pamyu Pamyu but instead of a live person, it's a freakin' HOLOGRAM??? Obviously there is a real person behind the voice (I hope?). But for a live concert, there's a actual hologram projected onto the stage. I read about this a while ago so I'm not sure if that's still a thing anymore in Japan.
